  • Espn radio had an update on Fera transferring today and also mentioned that Brown had already transferred to OU. Am I missing something?

Just posted this in the other thread. From twitter:

"@jasonkersey: Just had a very brief phone call with PSU WR Justin Brown. Said he's not close to a decision & doesn't have a timetable for one #Sooners"

We are all missing responsible journalism from that particular source for a while now

  • If you remember JB's recruitment he dragged it out and hemmed and hawed until he commited. Sounds like his modus operandi. Some people are quick decision makers some not. It seems like with a December graduation leaving the program wouldn't make sense for him.

And no offense to the Sooners but Oklahoma degrees aren't in the same tier and I'm not sure the NFL is banging down the door for Brown. Even if he gets a few years or bounces around a bit, he should be thinking about life beyond football.

    edtee

  • he is a senior and one of the top receivers on a heavy passing offense that is coached by a former NFL offensive cord. On top of that he finishes his schooling in December. Why is he even considering leaving? Because he can't go to a bowl game? One game??

  • IF he would transfer for a better QB situation, I'd have to think Arkansas would be his best bet. At OU, he may not be getting a whole lot of targets. Eastward one state there's a man named Tyler Wilson looking for someone to catch some passes since all 3 of his leading receivers went on to the League.
Obviously I'm not condoning his transfer, but since we heard that he reached out to Stoops and Co. it just took me by surprise and I think Arkansas may be a better path to increase his draft stock (minus Bobby Petrino).

His degree would still be from Penn State. He'd just take a couple of courses and have them transferred to PSU then graduate from here.

I would hope that we would not accept those transferred credits. Call me petty, but I don't want a kid using us for a degree if we're not good enough for him to play ball for.

Yeah. Eff him. It's all about football. It's not like he worked hard in the classroom towards his PSU degree.

ok, I'll call you petty. The kid busted his butt for Penn State for 3 seasons, and now you'd want to stick it to him just out of spite.

But he will be be working in the classroom at Oklahoma this year. You don't find that hypocritical to use them for football and us for a degree? Oh I forgot, hypocritical is the new cool in this mess.

The requirement for a degree is that at least 36 of the last 60 credits must be earned at Penn State.

    PSU_DG

  • God I hope we don't give him a degree if he transfers. That's just getting screwed both ways. You want to go to Oklahoma, you get the toilet paper degree, too.

  • Not to say that Penn St doesn't have a higher ranked University regarding academics (going straight off Forbes list which was updated July 2012), but the University of Oklahoma is no toliet paper degree. By comparison, Forbes ranks PSU 184th in the country, OU 273.

OU still has a long way to go to improve 100 spots, but in the last 15 years, OU has increased by at least 100 spots due to President Boren. OU is #1 in the nation for the number of National Merrit scholars for a public university.

Penn State is much more than marginally ahead of OU academically. Citing Forbes as your source is fundamentally flawed. PSU is a first tier university. OU is not. Simple as that.

Well I didn't come on here to trash Penn St or anything other than I frequent numerous schools websites for different opinions about the start of the season in a few short weeks.

You want to bash OU and claim a Penn St degree is all high and mighty, fine, but let's not forget we are not talking about the U of Penn.

BTW, 1st tier schools start with the IVY league schools, Stanford, Harvard, Yale, Brown, and a few others but not many and I am sorry, PSU is not anywhere on the same page as those schools.

This took about 5 min of research:

    US Rankings:
US News Rankings: PSU 45, Oklahoma 101-111
Washington Monthly Rankings: PSU 47, Oklahoma 145

    Worldwide Rankings:
Academic Ranking of World Universities: PSU 45 (31 in USA), Oklahoma 301-400 (111-137 in USA)
Times Higher Education World University Rankings: PSU 51, Oklahoma 301-350
QS World University Rankings: PSU 95, Oklahoma 301-400

I can give you the links if you want.
Bottom line is that PSU is a Public Ivy and a top 50 university in the US. PSU is also top 50-100 worldwide. Oklahoma is nowhere near that. Not to say Oklahoma isn't a decent school, because it is. As you say, its rankings have improved pretty drastically over the last few years. But the two schools are not currently in the same class.

    edit: listed something twice.

I'm an academic. PSU is an elite university at the graduate level. Absolute elite research university. OU is not even remotely in that arena. Even at the undergraduate level it is far more competitive. Try applying to OU and PSU as an out of state student, and you will find out quickly the difference.

OU is a mediocre institution. PSU is not. This isn't news to anyone, except for those of you who live in the south.

  • Any update here? Thought he was meeting with BOB earlier and then things went quiet. I know it is Friday so I don't expect much, but thought it was weird how it just went silent.
