Fair point. But he's comparing the the pain that comes with your favorite football program not being able to play in a bowl game to the suffering that comes with being molested as a child. I think it's safe to say there's no comparison.

Idk this sucks... Im kidding, of course there's no comparison.

Gents, it has been a pleasure chatting with you over the last year or so, a lot of great people on here but I am done with college sports. Will not watch a game or support anything related to the NCAA again. What Emmert did today was beyond comprehension to me.

Does he think that a victim of this type of crime will ever come forward again knowing that if he does his entire community is going to be punnished when he does so? Will this punnishment scare univeristy administrators? It should (for any number of reasons), but I believe that it will also scare vicitms of similar crimes from coming forward in the future. Maybe I am wrong, but from dealing with many abuse survivors through my job, this would be their worst nightmare for many of them.

The NCAA had an opportunity here to really try and make a difference - hell turn PSU football into a non-pofit - put the bulk of the money from the football program into develping programs to support abuse victims, to educating the public that it is not only ok, but imperative that adults not look the other way, take the stigma away from asking the tough questions when something doesn't seem right, create a program that will develop counsellors for abuse victims and fund it through football. Do something that actually helps victims and helps prevent child abuse. Instead Emmert made a political power play for his own benefit in the name of these victims.

This could have been something that punnished the university and the football program as both would suffer without the funding, but that could actually do some good for victims of abuse and would not punish thousands of innocents in central PA or the student athletes at PSU.

While I think that the NCAA is misguided in punishing the football program, that pales in comparison to what I think they have done to the vicitms in this case and imo probably future cases that we will never hear about.

Cement your power Emmert, just don't look down at the people your stood on to get there, you might not like what you see.

Good luck to all of the PSU athletes, students and alumni that may read this, you deserve so much better than the leadership (or more specifically the lack thereof) that you have at PSU.

People already were scared to come forward, remember the janitors that saw Sandusky raping a kid and decided not to report because they were sure that not only themselves but all of the janitors would be fired to protect the football program. You are way in denial, a message had to be sent that this would never be tolarated again at any university. I'm sad your university leadership failed you all so much at Penn State, but it happens.

All of us Bama fans had to live through some awful years in the early 2000s because of the actions of a few, and we had to be punished too. And it worked, the culture of our athletic department has changed since the Dubose sanctions. Hopefully your university future leadership changes the culture of Penn State to. It will lead to better days. Good Luck.

So the NCAA deciding to punish the program ruined college football for some of you, not the fact Penn State covered up child rape?

That's what I mean when I say that about misplaced anger. I take no issue with those of you who still support Penn State. But if you were on the fence about it, it shouldn't have taken the NCAA ensuring the program sucks for a few years to swing you one way or the other.

The scandal at Penn State didn't ruin college football for me or Penn State football. It ruined my opinion of Sandusky, Paterno, and McQueery who are 3 ex-Penn State football coaches. Over the next 10 years, I expected the football team to compete on the field, mostly graduate, continue to be a headliner for THON, throw Lift for Life, continue to make sick kids wishes come true, and generally do all of the awesome things they did over the last 10 years without a sicko using the program to molest kids.

We will be back though it will be tough, but I assure you that we will be back!

I kind of hope that the recruits see that they can still make a difference. Penn State can still be a ranked program, it just can't win a trophy.

No, wrong, and wrong. Nick Saban doesn't have any less power today than he did yesterday. And the last thing a college exceutive would think before covering up child rape is "man, this could really hurt the football program" because at that point, he would be facing jail time. More jail time than Schultz and Curley too, b/c laws are changing all over the country.

The NCAA levels "unjust" penalties against the innocent who are left after tatoo scandals, dealings with an agent, or receiving an house, because those issues are neither illegal, nor imoral. The NCAA makes them imoral because if you engage in those activities, you put your program in hot water. Covering up child rape is imoral and illegal. There just doesn't have to be an "unjust" deterent.

PSU fans, students, alumni, and coaches already are being punished by civil suits may be more than the 60 million penalty, which I agree with, which totals 120 million the university does not have to spend elsewhere. The victims DESERVE this money, but it is a consequence for everyone else. Add to that embarassement, shame, and ridicule, and the fact recruiting had already taken a hit...what is the need for extra punishment...PR and everyone getting caught up in rightous outrage in a misplaced direction.

You don't think Janitors across the country are scared to come forward about anything? This is why we as a country had to create Whistleblower laws...that isn't limited to PSU...

I didn't say it was limited to Penn State, but it is basic internal control procedures to create an anonymous hotline that reports to a committe that reports directly to the BOT and bypasses the Athletic Director so that the bottom level employees can report this stuff without fear of getting fired. No such program was in place to protect the employees. Doing things like send a message that no one is above the law and allows the BOT to perform oversight. That is one of the reasons why the Freeh report said the BOT did not do their due deligence in creating a culture of compliance.

trust me, even thought the media would allow everyone to belive Nick Saban is all powerful at Alabama, Mal Moore our athletic director has more clout with our BOT than Nick does. And before the Dubose debacle, our athletice department would have tried to hide and minimize the Mark Price "I like going to topless bars while recruiting" scandle, but President Witt at the time stepped in and immediately fired him over it even though it meant we would have to settle with hiring Mike Shula and sticking with him until the scholarship probation was over. Even though most do not realize it in the media or even among our own fan base, we actually do have better checks and balances now then we ever have in Alabama's history when it comes to our football program and the university as a whole.

If the culture at PSU needs changing, which it does but not to this extent, Emmert needs to revisit a quote in Columbus as that geeky president said "I was afraid coach was going to fire me." You had the president at OSU bowing to Tressel. That is also an attitude that needs changing.

I agree Ohio State has a culture issue too, a lot of unversity's have a football first at all cost culture. But Ohio State did not coverup for a child rapist. If Ohio State had done the same they would have been leveled to. In fact if something like this had come out let's say this fall with Ohio State considering they are currently on probation, I have no doubt that they would get the death penalty.

anyone aside of the SEC teams would have been leveled for this... keep your heads up PSU fans! there's still football and even if you don't have top teams for the next few years, you get your chance to shake things up and that's fun sometimes too! i'll be rooting for penn state in all the games.. except of course when they play the buckeyes! you still have the whole seasons to play!

You really think anyone who was molested by a football coach and watched the program cover it up really gives a damn about said football program anymore?

Considering more than one of Sandusky's victims are Penn State football season ticket holders, I would say yes they do.
Unlike you, they have the ability to separate the evil deeds of one man (or 4-5) and that of 100 innocent, hardworking 18-22 year old student athletes at Beaver Stadium each year.
So regardless of what you think in your ignorant little world, the victims don't need you as their white knight in shining armor ready to slay an enemy that's not there in the football program.

Is that why Saban was named "the most powerful man in sports"? He was selected for that award over Paterno, btw

I agree there were certain mechanisms that need to be adopted Penn State that were not in place in 2000. We should have been punished by the appropriate organization (DOE).

However, the Janitors did know the university policy (albeit the wrong policy) and still choose to ignore it. Other Janitors reported instances of crime and were not punished during the same time.

    Lion_in_CBus

  • This post speaks of why PSU was punished in the first place. You're stating that no one will come forward and report abuse going forward because of what it might cost the program? Look what happened when it was concealed. How many victims came forward once this news broke? In hindsight, do you think those janitors or Paterno speak up? I do think so. That's the point of these sanctions.

    Unbelievable.
