How pathetic of you to play it off as the punishments encouraging victims to keep silent because the community won't have a good football team to watch for decades.

We all hope there aren't random nutters PSU nutters that take this out on any of the victims. The 60 million will help victims around the country but the bowl ban/scholarships are going to kill athletic revenue and that does NOT help Sandusky's victims. Penn State would love to be able to settle these cases ASAP which means for a ton of money. The less money they have...well.
Some of the victims were PSU fans (no idea if they still are) and come from Central PA, and you better believe State College buisness will take a hit.
It is not a invalid or "offensive" position to take that the victims of this crime are hurt by the football bowl and scholarship sanctions.

So you're saying people should just spend their hard-earned money on an inferior product to support a local economy?

I'm sorry but one of the inherit risks you take in opening up a small business is the potential fickleness of the clientele. In this scenario that we face, PSU has an inferior product therefore people are less likely to spend their money on the games.

I'll still go up for the Festival Of the Arts (assuming it's still held there) and spend a few dollars at The Tavern. I might go up for the occasional homecoming as well, for sentimental purposes. However, I am not going to drive 3+ hours to watch a team that's playing for nothing but pride get shelled and sit at the bottom of the conference just so Zeno's or Bar Bleu can make their money.

Yes you take your hard earned ten dollars a month and continue to give these guys to co tinier to report on PSU athletics. Just because the football team will suck doesn't mean the guys that run this site are putting out and inferior product

Interesting coming from an Auburn poster who's team recently bought a national title and the NCAA doesn't really seem to care. What Auburn did with Cam Newton and his old man is more in the rule book than PSU's deal. Turn a blind eye I guess for Emmert.

really? I'm pretty sure the NCAA investigated every square inch of our athletic department and couldnt find a single major violation....now, PSU on the other hand....

  • I have to agree. It will be difficult for me to spend my money to maintain my "obsession" with all things PSU. I currently have two subscriptions (FOS/247), I buy just about anything PSU. I live in Chicago so I make it to one or two home games but hit all their road games close by. I have 5 kid's that will be coming up to the college level (one already there). I will not support my next four going to PSU if this is the administration they will be going to. I have choices to make also with where my money goes and frankly, that choice was made for me today. I'll do the same (at least take a 5-7 year break). My wife will be thrilled!! Always wanted a lake house!!

ah yes, but the NCAA had to cover that up. They couldnt have another Hiesman trophy winner tainted after the Reggie Bush scandal. You have the guys father on tape shopping him, but Cam never knew.....thats rich.

to Miss St. Auburn did nothing wrong. If you have some proof then please bring it forward.

  • I'm not going anywhere. If anything, I'm more committed (and possibly should be "committed")... I'm livid on a hundred levels. But you can't walk out when you're needed most. There are many circumstances in life where folding is the right move. This isn't one of them. The character of those who stay and fight will define Penn State's emergence from this dark time. Some people say it will take a decade to revive from this. I say it can remain positive and prominent to some degree / to the best of its ability and re-emerge after this storm passes. There are too many people's lives and livelihoods at stake in the region. You don't shut down Mardi Gras after the hurricane... You clean this shit up and get ready for the damn party. I don't care if there's a boat and 1/2 of someone's house on your front lawn... You tear it apart one piece at a time. Some things are worth perseverence.... And Penn State cannot be defined by the actions of so few and the overreaction of those who would happily grandstand on its ashes if allowed... WE STILL ARE.

  • Deciding the day that NCAA sanctions come out that you are no longer interested enough in recruiting information to come to a board, or in the team to attend games is a bit of a quick reaction, don't you think?

I'm not an alumni...after reading about the scandal in November, I wondered if I would give 2 craps about the game against Nebraska, and then I found myself routing for the boys harder than ever. I can't tell you if I cancel my membership in 2 weeks, or 2 years, but not today.

Gents, it has been a pleasure chatting with you over the last year or so, a lot of great people on here but I am done with college sports. Will not watch a game or support anything related to the NCAA again. What Emmert did today was beyond comprehension to me.

Does he think that a victim of this type of crime will ever come forward again knowing that if he does his entire community is going to be punnished when he does so? Will this punnishment scare univeristy administrators? It should (for any number of reasons), but I believe that it will also scare vicitms of similar crimes from coming forward in the future. Maybe I am wrong, but from dealing with many abuse survivors through my job, this would be their worst nightmare for many of them.

The NCAA had an opportunity here to really try and make a difference - hell turn PSU football into a non-pofit - put the bulk of the money from the football program into develping programs to support abuse victims, to educating the public that it is not only ok, but imperative that adults not look the other way, take the stigma away from asking the tough questions when something doesn't seem right, create a program that will develop counsellors for abuse victims and fund it through football. Do something that actually helps victims and helps prevent child abuse. Instead Emmert made a political power play for his own benefit in the name of these victims.

This could have been something that punnished the university and the football program as both would suffer without the funding, but that could actually do some good for victims of abuse and would not punish thousands of innocents in central PA or the student athletes at PSU.

While I think that the NCAA is misguided in punishing the football program, that pales in comparison to what I think they have done to the vicitms in this case and imo probably future cases that we will never hear about.

Cement your power Emmert, just don't look down at the people your stood on to get there, you might not like what you see.

Good luck to all of the PSU athletes, students and alumni that may read this, you deserve so much better than the leadership (or more specifically the lack thereof) that you have at PSU.

Your anger is so misplaced it's laughable.

PSU will likely have insurance that will pay any settlements or judgments to plaintiffs in civil action.

No, Fitz et. al. will be hit hard because of what ERICKSON did.

Subscriptions had only gone up since the Sandusky news hit. Now that Erickson has acted, subscriptions will drop significantly.

Sandusky shot Penn State in the knee. Erickson gave it a death blow.

Good God, you people are insane!

One thing you won't get if you haven't been on this board is that we all have expressed our opinions to no end about what we think about Sandusky, Spanier, Shultz, Curley, and Paterno. We are past that. Now we are decided how we feel about the NCAA. And don't come back and say we haven't discussed/helped the victims. We did that first and had a RAIN donation link for weeks which MANY of us clicked on and donated.

You really think anyone who was molested by a football coach and watched the program cover it up really gives a damn about said football program anymore?

So the NCAA deciding to punish the program ruined college football for some of you, not the fact Penn State covered up child rape?

That's what I mean when I say that about misplaced anger. I take no issue with those of you who still support Penn State. But if you were on the fence about it, it shouldn't have taken the NCAA ensuring the program sucks for a few years to swing you one way or the other.

I distinctly remember seeing an article in November about one of the victims being a PSU fan and being sad about Paterno getting fired.

Fair point. But he's comparing the the pain that comes with your favorite football program not being able to play in a bowl game to the suffering that comes with being molested as a child. I think it's safe to say there's no comparison.
