Joyner addresses search process

Penn State athletic director David Joyner answers questions about the search following Bill O'Brien's press conference.

    Lions247 Staff

  • Parts of that interview are just absolutely flat out untrue. Does anyone believe O'brien was the only one offered? If offered means the only one that signed a contract I guess so.

    PSUkurt

  • Offered is not that important & simply a play on words.

If Joyner said to Plan A, "IF we offer you the job would you be interested." That is not an offer.

"If you were to take the job, what would be your salary expectations." That is not an offer.

Better question would be, "who did you talk to about the job or who expressed interest in the job, or who were candidates for the job."

  • Joyner is a pathological liar. Honestly, I am beginning to believe he is a sociopath. I am aware of at least 2 people who talked to him in Dallas and in response to newspaper reports about leading candidates, he gave his standard " don't believe what you read" He offered an example, unprovoked, that there was a report about "some guy from New England i never heard of" being the leading candidate.

Think about that for a second. Why would he even volunteer that info, which was obviously a lie? It is almost as though this "secrecy" scam took over his life.

    Pennoyer

  • Pennoyer, you don't know with certainty that he lied nor will you ever. He could have been talking about someone else. He absoutely did the right thing in maintaining secrecy about this search. Do you think for a moment, if he set a standard that the names and process played out in public, that PSU would get interest in future athletic deptarment openings? You can't throw people under the bus for their interest. Nor can you allow candidates to play off against their current employer or other candidates. If he parses words to keep the process confidential, he is doing what he should to respect the process. How would you feel if you wanted to change employers and your prospective new employer announced your name as a candidate publicly, before a final commitment was made?

  • Regardless if BOB is a success or not, Joyner has failed big time. Almost makes me want Curley back...

I keep seeing this ... exactly how has he failed?

  • whether BOB succeeds or not, he's our coach.

Having said that, Joyner's flat out lying by saying it's been him from the start. If it's been him from the start, why wait 57 days?

Well if you believe like most rational people do that they tried to get a big name, then he failed. Add the length of the search, the arrogance, players and coaches finding out on ESPN, and IMO the biggest failure is the way Bradley was treated. Other than that he did a great job.

  • Of course BOB wasn't the only offer. What is Joyner supposed to say? "Well, after the first 5 or 6 guys said no... we tried hard for Petersen... we ended up settling on THIS guy..." He's never going to say that.
When you ask a man a question be cant answer honestly then attack him for lying, it's a bit unfair.

Really unfair to refer to Joyner as a "pathological liar".

Ever hear of this guy Tim Murphy, who was rumored to be a leading candidate?

He was talking about O'Brien. The conversations were Sunday night and Monday, right after the story about O'Brien, came out. He lied throughout this process.
