The kid always wanted to play in the SEC. He is finally getting love from down there. He's gone.

    I agree.

  • After talking to his mother today it looks like USCe might be his final destination. Unfortunately playing in the SEC and closer to home is winning out. She said losibg Ted Roof really made him start thinking as Ted has been recruiting him for a while.

Walton was definitely Ted Roof's recruit. IIRC, there was a disagreement within the staff as whether PSU should go after Walton or not. That was before the sanctions.

Thanks for the info, but I don't think he was staying even if Roof was still here.

According to his mother he would have. Roof started recruiting him while at Auburn, he trusted Roof completely.

    Interesting. Well that sucks then.

Do you know if he's developed any sort of relationship with Rob Vanderlinden, the LB's coach?

No offense .. he was thinking long before Ted Roof's departure to Georgia Tech. If he wasn't thinking, he wouldn't have scheduled a visit to USCe a month ago.

    Thanks for the info.

I would have to ask. Roof is who brought his attention to Penn State

His mother has said all along that he would take all 5 visits. As I and my boss told her he has earned the right to. So the visit to USCe was going to happen regardless of interest or not. All last week she said as long as the HC and Roof stayed at Penn State his visits were nothing more than free trips.

  • I think the staff should go after some of Syracuse's recruits if we lose Cothren and/or Walton. Syracuse has a 3 star DE and 3 star both from FL on their committ list plus a 3 star LB who was a juco at a California school. Shouldn't be hard to get these kids to take a look at PSU given marrone's departure.

I'm sorry, but I'm not a guy that likes to waste time and resources of another school, if its just to take a free trip. My kid, if he ever get in this position, WON'T be doing that. I lose respect for kids and parents in that regard. IMO, the kid made a bad choice verballing to PSU if it was for certain he was going to take all five trips. Wait until you make your visits then decide.

If I'm BOB and I'm recruiting kids from the south and they decide to verbal to PSU, you say, we are glad to have you and hope you stick with us. Should we find out you are deciding to visit other schools as a PSU verbal, your offer could very well become void at that time. This is the problem with kids int he south. They use placeholders while waiting for better offers. They aren't committed one bit.

  • This isn't about free trips IMO. He's pumped about the SEC and will land there IMO....oh well. Roof leaving will be a convenient excuse, but I'm not thinking his loyalty was to PSU. Any kid that excited over an offer this late in the game isn't committed to anyone.

This is not meant as a shot at Walton, but a guy who's had 5 jobs in 7 years might not be the best person to put all of your trust in. The only disappointment for me here is that NO ONE with a pulse besides Penn State offered this kid for months and months, and then one comes along at the last minute and he runs to them. You did hear it first hand from his mother, but the statement about Roof being the cause is hard for me to believe considering he had the trip scheduled well before this.

You and your boss urging him to take visits while committed doesn't exactly send a good message though, does it? Never understood how an adult could advise a teenager to "look around" when he's already committed somewhere. Then again, I hear it's ok in the south, and I should just get used to it. But I doubt I ever will.

    I agree.

And I think Parker Cothren will not be too far behind.

Big question is who does PSU go after to fill their spots? The staff will not carry over that many slots to next year.

recruiting in the south is near pointless.....kids dont want to leave the south, the weather, and more specifically, the SEC. After all of these consecutive championships, who could blame them

You and your boss urging him to take visits while committed doesn't exactly send a good message to a kid about character, does it? Never understood how an adult could advise a teenager to welch on his word when it comes to a college commitment. Then again, I hear it's ok in the south, and I should just get used to it. Agree with this.

I find it somewhat funny though ... he was going to stick with PSU IF Roof and HC remains in place. HC is staying and he has met him. PSU has been on this kid since Roof got on campus. USCe gets on him after losing Rolin to Florida, so its been a month? Glad to know the relationship is that strong.

Anyway, I have no time for kids that use PSU as "placeholders". If distance was truly a factor, he had an offer from Troy. Unless the campus up and moved, Troy is still in Alabama and isn't far from home. Distance matters now? Why choose PSU over Troy if that was truly the case?

As a veteran of the collegiate athletic field for 16 years, I have a good idea of the time, effort and resources it takes to successfully recruit a kid from outside the area. Glad to see its become a big waste for PSU that USCe has made Walton a Plan T and will probably get him.

These kids have earned the right to take all 5 visits. Even if they are free trips, I even told her that they should hit up Hawaii. It isn't a slight against the school they are committed to. And for you to say that this is what kids in the South do is foolish. Kids from all areas of the country do the same thing. No need to make this into a north vs south thing.

Never told him to look around, both of us actually told him to visit schools or places he might never see. I think you guys are taking this personal as if Walton has just shunned Penn St. Roof has been recruiting him for nearly 2 years. He was why PSU had the in with him. He told Auburn last week to go jump off a cliff for how they was treating him. He loves PSU but at the same time he is close to his mother and feels it might be better if he played closer to home. He has yet to say if he is going to flip to USCe or if USCe has given him a commitable offer.

Again this has zero to do with being in the south.

If they earn the right to take all five trips as you say, then don't make a decision after all five have been taken. How many trips has Walton taken since the PSU verbal? None? It didn't look like five trips were going to be taken since we are how many weeks from NLI day.

It's a known fact that the southern kids are more apt to do this than any part of the country. They don't know what a commitment is. They know what a placeholder is though.

Telling her to hit up Hawaii for the free trip tells me alot about you. It's disingenuous.

From talking to the USCe fans, they are in dire need of LBs. I'm willing to bet that the offer is legit.

    getmyjive11

  • Noles, have you heard from Walton's camp about how many more LBs USCe is planning on taking in the class?
IIRC they already have 4 LB commits and Ngakoue and maybe another LB prospect are pretty high on them.
