Johnny Football...Johnny online

  • This is absurd... taking all his classes online this semester "it just worked out that way".

Manziel's classes online only this semester

Johnny Heisman might be hard to find on campus this semester. People wondered how Johnny Manziel would handle all of the attention on the Te

I am thinking barring major injury...Johnny Manziel is going to be entering the 2014 draft.

  • does he skip off season weights as well if he is traveling all over the nation? I bet there are some pretty upset teamates that work their tail off and this big timer isn't even around. I hope he flops next year.

But it is just another in the long list of NCAA Hypocrites that want to blame only PSU for a football culture.

  • The absurd part is all the other things he is doing besides campus and community engagement.

I have kids all the time that want a full time online schedule at the school I work at. However, it is because they have to work, or take car of their babies, or can't afford gas to get to campus, not because they want to float around being bigtime.

Johnny Manziel taking only online classes at Texas A&M

Johnny Manziel has become the big man off campus. The Texas A&M quarterback and Heisman winner said Monday night at the Davey O'Brien Award reception that all of his classes for this semester are online,

  • Personally, I don't really think it's that big of a deal. Who cares. We all know college is a joke to a lot of football players already.

  • Online classes...its easier to get someone else to do the work for you.

    98lion

  • I don't think it is so bad that he is taking classes online. You never know he might actually get some work done and do it himself. If one of our beloved kids did this (let’s say Robinson) we wouldn't think the worst so maybe we should give him the benefit of the doubt. The article doesn’t say anything about him not going to workouts and working with his teammates. Maybe, just maybe he might have done this to actually get an education and be able to play football.

  • Don't you get preference when choosing classes if you're an athlete? I'm sure scheduling all /most classes online is more common than you think.

As someone who graduated over 20 years ago, why would a school allow full time students to take online courses? It doesn't make sense to me for either the student or the school.

Allow for more courses. They have universal campuses now and can offer specialized courses online without the physical outlay. Online students can be a goldmine for the school.

Exactly. I'm a current student at main campus, and last semester I took 2 online classes to fulfill gen ed requirements. Made for a sweet schedule of only having real classes on Tuesdays and Thursdays. It is nearly 100% independent work. It only took about an hour a week to get an A in each class. The school has an instructor or grad assistant "in charge" of the class, but there is typically not much interaction needed. It also eliminates the need for physical space to hold class. In the end it's all about making more money.

  • Aren't online classes harder to complete since you only have one hand available?

I understand "non-traditional" students taking online courses or full-time students taking an occasional online course not offered at their school, but taking a full course load online seems antithetical to being a full time student.

Eh, I assume you mean on campus rather than full time, but not really. Some are only offered there some gave the option. Depends on the teacher. Not really a problem/ issue in my mind.

Yes, on campus. I guess I'm just old fashioned.

  • Yikes, I just figured out why journalists are so awful these days. There are 800 online "seats" available in the fall semester at Penn State for this class.

That class is basically just reading sentences and finding the mistake, really no need to be in a classroom.

  • I agree. I have NO problem with Manziel taking spring semester of online classes. It is the current state of higher education. How many years has Penn State been pushing their World Campus? They now even have a banner for it on All-University Day. Even High School kids are going the cyber school route to graduate high school these days. I am waiting for the news to hit that some big time recruit played for a certain high school but took all his classes through some cyber school website. The high schools have to leave them play even though they do not go to the school.

Just for a Penn State reference that is sort of similar to this situation. Penn State had their starting QB in twice in a span of 3 years basically being a part-time student by taking 2 classes. Collins had a really light class schedule in '94 (2-3 classes) and Richardson only had 2 classes in '96 and one was ballroom dancing. They were allowed to do it because they both graduated before their senior season.
