For those who didn't see it this morning, Troutman will likely miss his rookie year. Says something about how much the Chargers wanted him, though, because they knew about the injury beforehand.
Its no surprise to the team that drafted him.

Wow, interesting. That speaks volumes about what they think about Johnnie as a football player to take him in the 5th round knowing he will likely sit out his entire rookie season.
Late round picks are time for gambling but I wonder if he would have been available in free agency if they waited? Most teams are looking for impact now not a year from now. It does speak to the quality they saw in him before the injury.
The Chargers must have loved him. I think most teams, pre injury, had Troutman graded as 5th round or later. The fact that the Chargers knew about the injury and still took him in the 5th does show how much they like him. I think this should workout well for Troutman. He can rehab and work on his skills as he learns the system and pro game.
Where's happydudetom? Feel like he'd have some interesting insight on this..
I know a few scouts and they cannot believe that the Chargers drafted him in the 5th round knowing he was going to miss the year. As the one told, "they must really love the kid."
Charger fans NOT happy...
But in the 5th round, you generally aren't targeting a guy to start his rookie year, even at guard. If he is on IR all year, he won't waste a roster spot and can still be in a professional atmosphere learning. No different than taking a guy for the practice squad in the 5th.
More than just football
