Joes biggest supporter

  • I knew Phil would jump back into the fight and I don't blame him one bit for his silence after the Freeh report was issued. I was disappointed when he took Paternos name off one of his facilities but the media was just in such a feeding frenzy at the time he had little to no choice given he is running a multi billion dollar company. Enjoy the article and it is good to have this guy as a friend to PSU and a champion of Joe

Phil Knight of Nike says Joe Paterno wronged by Freeh report - ESPN

Nike co-founder Phil Knight said Monday that Joe Paterno was unfairly maligned by the unjustified and unsubstantiated findings of the Freeh Report.

It does boggle the mind that one of Joe's greatest supporter also had a rush to judgement.

  • I missed this yesterday. And wouldn't hit the link ha.

" Last July I was surprised and saddened by the Freeh Report and the subsequent press conference held by the former FBI Director. In response to the shocking findings, which were so definitively and passionately presented, and based on the reputation of Louis Freeh, I issued a statement which said in part, "According to the investigation, it appears Joe made missteps that led to heartbreaking consequences. I missed that Joe missed it, and I am extremely saddened on this day."

I made this statement without having read the report in full. When I later took the time to do so, I was surprised to learn that the alarming allegations, which so disturbed the nation, were essentially theories and assertions rather than solid charges backed by solid evidence. On reflection I may have unintentionally contributed to a rush to judgment.

With the release of the report by the King and Spalding law firm, including analysis by former Attorney General Dick Thornburgh and former FBI profiler James Clemente, it is clear that the findings of the Freeh Report were unjustified and unsubstantiated. When this tragic story first unfolded Joe cautioned all of us to slow down and carefully gather the facts before jumping to conclusions. We owed it to the victims, he said, to get to the truth. It was counsel we all should have followed. Additionally, The NCAA's actions are exposed as totally unwarranted. The NCAA acted outside its charter and rendered judgment absent any kind of investigation or judicial hearing. It was simply grandstanding.

And while some may still debate the who, what, when, where, why of this sad case, the clear villain, as Jim Clemente notes, is Jerry Sandusky himself."

Him backing away from Joe bothered me, glad he paraphrased Joe in his response

Huge! I was wondering what Phil thought about this. Wouldn't be surprised if he becomes a financier of future litigation.

Excellent. Do all the folks that said yesterday that the Paternos should just go away still feel that way? Again, fighting for the truth and what's right is always worthwhile.

In addition to calling out the true villain (JS), I'm glad to see Phil put the spotlight squarely on the NCAA in his statement.

    Apology accepted, Phil.

I still don't understand the logic of those you speak of. The man of their family has had his name and legacy stomped on because of a report with a lot of questions around it. I know they probably feel that by "keeping quiet" the Paterno's will help us get through this tme without anymore negativity. But in the big picture, thats an awfully self serving approach. I have no problem what-so-ever with the Paterno's reaching for the truth to be fully exposed with true facts. That will be hard until after the Curley/Shultz/Spanier trials because of the ongoing investigation. But they can only be so patient.....nobody else has been patient in their persecution of our university..why should the Paterno's be so patient. Stand up for what you believe in Sue, you have my full support.

I would think Nike has some clout with the NCAA somewhere along the way. Hopefully his influence can be heard and felt.

I won't lie, I did the same thing as Phil (and so many others). I went out and said stuff without ever reading the report. Then I read the report and adjusted what I was saying and posting.

After reading the report, I firmly believe we should put the Statue on wheels and wheel it out before the team onto the field every game.

  • I wish Phil Knight would get omn the media tour with this stuff.

Or OT question but isn't the Oregon President the guy who was Emmert's back up with the sanctions, etc....?

Nike sure does donate a lot of dough to that University, maybe Knight can use the money as a platform to get some kind of answers or use it to influence something.

Phil Knight's words mean a ton, but nearly as much as his wallet.

Ed Ray is at Oregon State--so he's probably not a big fan of Phil Knight and certainly isn't going to back him up on anything.

  • damn, thanks for clearing that up.

Although my buddy used to coach at Oregon State and they got a nice contract with Nike as well.

Exactly! Which is why I don't agree that he is or ever was Joe's biggest supporter at all. Would someone's "biggest supporter" react to a document he had not read completely. "Hey, man, I am your biggest supporter. You're my hero, but I'm gonna jump ship based on a document that I haven't read. See ya." Is that the behavior of a "biggest supporter?" I sure would hate to rceive support like that.

Having said that, it is good to see people coming around on this, but let's not overlook the fact that it is becoming much easier for people to do so now that the NCAA, Freeh, and others are being exposed as being inept. Phil Knight is not Joe's biggest supporter. He is a guy who got it wrong and is now saying so. Being the leader of Nike doesn't change that basic fact. Joe's biggest supporters never bailed on him...ask Franco Harris.

...not sure who you are, but I know who WE ARE...
