Joe Paterno Press Conference (9/20)

  • FireJayPa said...

He's been doing this for years.

When we are winning games people think it's cute/funny/sly/etc. Now it's just old and busted.

Reality check: 14 - 10 is a win, it isnt pretty it isnt blowing out a MAC team, but it is a win. We all understand you want a coaching change, I even agree with you, but for god's sake why do people need to post this crap on every thread?

Edited to clarify for EJB and FireJayPa

We won the game, we've gone 60 - 19 since 2005 including 2 BCS berths, FireJaypa's comment isnt relevant to the press conference or the teams performance, as we're winning games at the same rate Joe has always won them. Am I happy that we didnt win the games that would have put us in the MNC hunt in 2005/2008, Hell no.

EJB: Generally speaking the negative voices will be loudest, I dont really care if anyone posts to agree with me. As we've discussed in the other threads if I think a post is garbage, i'll comment on it. If you took the time to read my posts, you'd realize I actually agree on a coaching change.

Just looking back over the press conference, one thing did jump out to me. Joe credited Jay Paterno with the decision to go for it on fourth down, but following the game Galen Hall and Tom Bradley both said that Joe was the guy who made the call. Joe said everyone on the staff except Jay wanted to kick the field goal.

    Here we go...

who knows, could have been Galen and Tom being good solders and crediting the general with the decision. I guarantee you this, if it failed, Jay wouldn't be getting any blame from Joe.

Adam Taliaferro was on the sidelines in Philadelphia, I didn't see him. He got married, what, a week ago? He had the wedding on a day we played the game. I didn't see him.

I was having trouble myself on Saturday. I didn't know if I could walk out on the field before the game.

Well at least one of the two knew when to give up football. There's a real profound irony in his statement about being able to walk on the field there in regards to a discussion about Taliaferro. For a guy who has spent years making sure kids planned and prepared for more to their lives than football, he sure does struggle with the same dilemma.

Dude nobody is gonna seriously respond to you ever agreeing with you.... You are the first real poster I've seen that actually believes Joe can do no wrong. . . 14-10 is a win, you're right about that.... but votes matter... obviously the people who vote didn't view it as a win, because penn state went from 18 votes in the ap and 29 in the usa today to 0 in the ap and 19 in the usa today... wins and losses don't matter, the votes do.... and to the voters this game was worse than the alabama loss. . .

You're kidding right? What is this word, "adjust"? Whatever he thinks he's "adjusting" would be swimming in any adult-sized pocket.

What do you expect a coach to say? Why would he willingly tip his hand in a press conference?

"Tip his hand"? About what? It's shockingly possible for coaches to be honest about situations and not "tip their hand." The problem is that it's obvious Joe won't be making adjustments, because he believes the opponents really were that good. It's very possible for coaches to say "You know what? Our offensive line stunk this game, and we're going to address it this week."

Again I'll go with, You're kidding, right? He has no hand. You watched the Temple game, right? He has no "blueprint" that you speak of and name a single coaching staff in the NCAA that would put anything that Joe schemed in their back pockets. 30 years ago? Absolutely. Now? Haha.

Every year we try to give them the benefit of the doubt...

    - this year will be different, we're going to break out the spread again
    - we are going to run a bunch of fancy plays
    - okay....well maybe we just played vanilla not to show week 2 opponent anything
    - okay, maybe we just played vanilla not to show week 3 anything
    - okay,.....maybe Joe is just saving stuff for big ten play
    - okay...maybe he doesn't want to show OSU or MSU anything yet
    - okay....maybe joe really believes in the team next year so we are taking our lumps this year....

Would you rather he lay out a blueprint on what he's going to adjust for all NCAA coaching staffs to have in their pocket?

Umm, he already has. Haven't you been following PSU? How many times do we have to hear opposing players say they knew what we were going to run before we ran it. Or hear Jim Tressel say like he did last year that he could have watched a tape of PSU 5 years ago to gameplan against them as nothing has changed.

Or, how about just saying we sucked bad and need to improve? No need to pretend that Temple had anything to do with it.

Reality Check: In college football, the coaches top-25 has a direct impact on where you play in bowl games. More over, they look at quality of wins when determining rankings. For further proof look at PSU vs (insert team here) in 1994.

Reality Check: You're delusional if you think a 14-10 win is a sign of a good team. They are a MAC team, and if PSU had been in the top-25 they would have moved down the polls significantly due to it. However, when you're fine with 7-5 seasons and playing in the Car Care Bowl margin of victory isn't THAT important.

  • Here are the quotes I missed in the running recap:

    On the two quarterback system…

I don't know what I'm waiting for. I think both those kids are so close and both those kids deserve to play. One of these days I would like to be able to say, hey, we are going to play one quarterback.

But I want to be fair. As I said last weekend last week at the press conference, I said one thing I want to do is I want to be fair to them. I want to be fair to the team. If I felt that the team was much more comfortable with one than the other, then I'm repeating myself from last week, then that obviously would be a factor, but that's not the way it is. They don't -- half the time I don't think they even know who is at quarterback. Because I've talked to the kids.

I talk to them all the time. I'll say, how are we doing? How is Mack doing or how is the other kid doing and I don't get any negative feedback about either one of those kids. And I watch them practice. They both practice well, hustle and plays, out there early. They do everything you ask them to do. And it's very difficult for me to tell you so and so is better than the other one.

And so I don't know maybe I'm making a mistake in not deciding. Because as you said, I'm not real comfortable having two quarterbacks. I'm not comfortable with it. But I also wouldn't be comfortable if I did something that I felt ended up being unfair to one.

    So I have a dilemma.

On the defensive play his season and Saturday…

I think we played well defensively. I think we're a pretty good defensive football team. The thing I liked about Saturday we made turnovers in the clutch. We made some things happen for ourselves when we had to.

There was some people disappointed about that game when we came off the field. And my first reaction was, oh boy, we got a long way to go. But then when I started to talk to some of the kids and when I talked to some of the coaches who were on the sideline and that's one of the disadvantages about not being on the sideline, there was a bunch of guys who were pulling for each other, the defense was talking to the offense about hey we're going to get the ball back for you guys, when we get it back.

So there was not a defeatist attitude on it. So I think that -- and the thing that I liked the most as I started out to say was the fact that I think that defensively we made some things happen and then the offense took advantage of it.

They had the 70-yard touchdown pass called back in the clutch, when we really needed it. Had it called back. That did not kill them. We had the fourth down and about a half a yard to go, everybody wanted to kick the ball except Jay Paterno.

We would have kicked that ball if it wasn't for Jay. Jay said no, we'll put it in, we'll get it in. And he said something to the quarterbacks about, hey, you tell those guys they gotta get it in. And we got it in.

And obviously then we came up with the interception. So there's things we're doing better, yeah. But I'm not trying to get up here and tell you I'm completely pleased with the way we're going, but we're certainly a lot better than some of you think.

On the quarterbacks being allowed to audible…

These are all situations on the signal. That's why once in a while when you see some indecision on the line of scrimmage, it's because the people are changing the defense on them. They may have made a call and then -- and Temple did a good job earlier. And some of you -- I know most of you were very observant and knew right way that we started to go on quick so we made them line up. But when you start to make them line up quick that means you don't have a lot of time to change the play on the line of scrimmage. So you gotta get them into some kind of pattern. And Temple did a good job, as did Alabama, keep changing up on us.

And I think the observation that you've got to be able to adjust, change a play on the line of scrimmage is true. But sometimes you can't get to it. Because they're late coming.

If you watched, if I put the Alabama picture up here, you would see they played it two deep, until the very last moment, they were quick enough they could come up there as the ball was being snapped, change the whole defensive scheme. So it was very difficult to make some kind of a change in the play when the ball has been snapped. Because there's a lot of people involved in the change.

So you start going on quick to make them show it quicker. And when you go on quick, then obviously you've got to take what you called in the huddle. It's a chess game out there. And it's the problem everybody has. It's not just one that we have.

I'm not up here crying about it. That's part of the game.

This is without a doubt the most unbelievable thing I have seen in my few years of following college football. I'm so much madder about his answers than i am the situation. frustratedsoapbox

So allof a sudden Joe is about being fair? Why the SUDDEN change of heart?

Players may not have picked one QB over the other or daid negative things but they have made it clear they want Joe to pick one and stick with him. Funny he left that out.

So Alabama was doing that and we didn't adjust. Great coaching.

Joe says we neef to adjust, but we dont. Awesome.
