Joe Paterno Press Conference (8/30)

  • Shawney Kersey has had a lot of little problems. He's got tremendous potential, I don't know if he's reached it yet. We've got two or three wideouts that have the chance to be really good. Moye is a bigtime kid, Brown is under appreciated. Kersey is the same kind of kid, maybe the fastest except for Smith, once in a while he lacks concentration. He's had a good preseason, and there's no questoin about his potential. He can do a lot of things well, he just needs to do the little things.

  • With Indiana State, the coaching staff has done a good job and they've had a couple guys transfer in there. They have a fine quarterback, they've done a really good job coaching. They're organized, they're disciplined. They'll be a good opener for us.

    That's it for the day.

Just dumb all around. It'll be really interesting to watch who benefits from certain situations in games. (field position, defensive schemes playing against, etc..)

Oh boy, you are already assembling your tin foil hat.

  • Bolden starts vs. Bama. Write it down.

  • The QB situation is like this Joe likes McGloin and Jay/Galen like Bolden. Now the question becomes which side wins the battle in the next couple of days.

What goes on from there, I don't have a crystal ball. The good Lord hasn't come down and told me what's going to happen - he didn't even come down and tell me to get out of the way of Smith.

This is asinine and disingenuous. The good Lord doesn't care who starts. Joe is God as far as the team is concerned. He doesn't need a crystal ball, he just has to make a decision. He knows who he wants, he's just not saying for whatever reason.

The problem with the thing last year is where did one kid go. We used up a year and his family was concerned that he wouldn't get an opportunity to play. I tried to get it across to his family that spring practice would play a big part in his situation. We spend all this time talking about the quarterbacks, I feel good about the quarterbacks.

I love Joe Pa, but if spring practice would play such a huge part then why are we taking so long with the QB situation?

    Fish or cut bait.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

  • Joe is playing it close to the vest for Bama. That way they can't gameplan entirely for one QB. He absolutely won't play 2 for that game, so expect a starter to be announced mid-week next week. Better be Bolden, but let's see how they play against ISU. I am cautiously optimistic we can take down Bama if we do the following:
    1) stack the box to contain Richardson (hold him to 100 yds or less)
    2) frequent blitzes from the edges and up the middle to rattle their QB
    3) tight man and press coverage to force their receivers to make adjustments
    4) On offense, pass early and often, and stretch the field to setup the run later on.
    5) Sczerba can be a huge weapon down the seam on play action. Watch for it.

We'll see how agressive Joe and Tom are, that's the only way to win. Can't be conservative on Sept 10.

What? You mean god doesn't speak to Joe and make decisions for him?

  • "3) tight man and press coverage to force their receivers to make adjustments "

PSU will...at least twice in that game. They do need to stop TR or games over right there. We know, they know it, Bama knows it....this is no secret. Can PSU stop him though is the question.

My head is about to explode.

I want Bolden to start but can't begin to even fathom thinking I agree with Jay on something. Maybe we can just start Shane McGreggor

I go against 3, but dont mind the rest of you your points.

Young QB for Bama regardless, I make him read zones. Man coverage..toss it up, let your WR win. If I were a young QB not used to reading defenses I would Pray to whomever, that a team would show me man coverage. lol

I dont mind pressing in the corners to show man, mixing it up with solid percentage, and tighten the early part of the zone however, you wont hear me argue that.

Why wouldn't they? If they were even at practice, why not see who is better in the game and go with that guy? If one is clearly better than the other, why would anyone think that the other guy would do better against Bama?

Bolden and McGloin have different strengths/weaknesses, but they're similarly utilized players. Our offensive sets don't vary too drastically from one QB to the other, so there's no real 'strategic mystery' created by playing both. If that were the case, why wouldn't every team play 2 QB's before a big game to throw off an opponent's preparation? Because that's absurd. We're playing 2 QB's because the coaches are undecided on who they want to start, and would like some actual in-game data before making a decision, rather than going strictly by practice. It's not a big deal for Indiana St, but it will be crucial to establish one guy before Bama.
