  • Anthony Fera, right now, he got himself into a couple of jams and should know better. I told him I would sit him out until he understands. He's got some responsibilities, it wasn't anything serious, but he broke some rules. When he's going to play, I couldn't tell you. We'll watch how he does things and then I'll make my mind up.

  • I'm surprised you asked me about the quarterback...

Both those kids have done really well. They've had a good summer and a good preseason. I'm not a guy that plays two quarterbacks but we'll play both of them.

  • We've got a lot of guys whose injuries affect the team more than mine.

We still don't have Drake, they're going to give him some tests on Friday to see if he's going to go, Hailes is back, Gilliam and Massaro won't play this year. Hailes, we think he's going to make it. He's got some restrictions. Drake is out there running around and doing things, he hasn't had any contact or anything. Maybe he'll have some final tests on Friday.

‏@Cordale10 Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

  • Not surprised one bit by his comments regarding the QBs - even the fact that he didn't name a starter. He knows how sticky of a topic this is, especially with the future of the program floating in the air if they make the wrong move.

  • Bolden and McGloin have had more exposure, they have had more confidence in themselves. Hopefully we'll be better offensively, hopefully up front. The whole grouping is better. Some of the wideouts are more confident in what they see. They've got a better feel for one guy's speed compared to the others. All of those, there's a lot of little things that go into it. In the spring practice they've worked together and in the summer. All of that obviously makes the better. Just being around the people you're going to play with over a period of time helps you out.

  • Stephfon Green had gotten in a couple of situations, some academic, some otherwise. He understood that he had certain responsibilities, but I told him I wouldn't let him come out for football. We weren't going to take his grant away because he's going to graduate. He went to work, he showed that he deserved another shot and I gave it to him.

  • Losing Fera hurts, but we won't know how much until we play some games we won't know how much. Right now I'm optimistic.

  • On looking ahead at Alabama...

Anybody can beat anybody. Who beat Michigan? We talk all the time about being as good as you can be. We're not home free, we've got some problems yet but we're optimistic that we've made great progress and we're a better team than we were at this time last year. I'm really not concerned about looking ahead as much as other people are. I think we're focused on getting better. We were not happy with our team last year, that's an understatement. I'm hopeful that we're going to be mature enough to go from there.

Just dumb all around. It'll be really interesting to watch who benefits from certain situations in games. (field position, defensive schemes playing against, etc..)

By benefits I mean if they are using this game to judge the QBs.

And Joe doesn't know what is going to happen moving forward because the good lord hasn't told him?? Please tell me they do know what is going to happen week 2 and they aren't seriously just praying for 1 guy to force their hand. Please tell me they are better at evaluating talent than this.

  • Right now, as I said earlier, we have two quarterbacks who have made progress and done well, both can get the most out of this football team. What goes on from there, I don't have a crystal ball. The good Lord hasn't come down and told me what's going to happen - he didn't even come down and tell me to get out of the way of Smith.

  • On coaching from the sidelines - 'I'm trying to be!' Medical people want him upstairs but that's 'for the birds.' Probably 50/50 on that.

Seemed like that was a pretty enthusiastic JoePa quote. If he's smart, he'll be in the booth for the ISU game and on the field for Bama, God willing.

  • Johnnie Troutman is going to play a lot. Our problem right now is that we're shallow a couple of offensive linemen to feel comfortable that we had a backup guy at every position. I'm not sure that we are. Troutman can play either guard. We're not sure which one we're going to start. I'm not sure if we'll start Troutman or Urschel. If we start Urschel, he gives us a backup center if we need it. Mike Farrell is learning both tackles and I think we'll be OK if we just stay healthy for a while. We'll get a couple of younger kids and see some kids that are just feeling the ropes, we'll get some depth in there. If we get a couple of injuries there we might have some problems early.

  • We've been fortunate that most of our skill players have stayed healthy. Some of our young kids are playing well, Haplea played well last year. We've got two good fullbacks. The quarterbacks should be much more comfortable, and they have been. I've been very pleased with how they've practiced. They've picked up a lot. People don't realize a kid like Bolden last year, we take him down to Tuscaloosa and he wasn't even with us for spring practice. That was a very volatile situation. That was a difficult thing that we asked him to do. Both of these kids have played, and they've gotten some good experience. They were both exposed to different situations. The quarterback situation isn't one of my big concerns right now.

  • The problem with the thing last year is where did one kid go. We used up a year and his family was concerned that he wouldn't get an opportunity to play. I tried to get it across to his family that spring practice would play a big part in his situation. We spend all this time talking about the quarterbacks, I feel good about the quarterbacks.

  • I think last year I wasn't demanding enough toughness. I think we're in a better position to play 60 minutes of solid football.

  • Szczerba has worked awfully hard. Whatever the medical people wanted him to do, he did. He started out a little rusty, he hadn't worked with the team for almost a year and he's come along and he's gotten better. He's got all the potential to be a pretty big time tight end. We're good at tight end, him and Haplea give us two.

  • I enjoy starting a new season. It's hard to believe I'm going to start my 62nd year, and yet I'm as excited about it and nervous about some things. I wasn't sure how good our practice was yesterday, our coaches thought it was good, but I wasn't happy with the enthusiasm and stuff. After talking with the staff, I guess it was a good practice. There's 1,000 things that you have to be able to handle. I have a checklist to make sure we're not overlooking something. I'm anxious to see us play, I really am. I enjoy it, I like being out there. I like practice. I feel better this year - until I got bumped up a little bit - I could do a lot of things that I used to do and hopefully I can do that next week. I feel good. I get up in the morning looking forward to it.
