Jay Paterno to be on Cowherd too?

I was going to say, did he go off after Jay left stage?

Not really. He's sticking with his position that Joe should have done more, based upon who he is. But he surprisingly seemed open to new facts.

Yea. He says he still holds Joe accountable for not doing more. Everyone seems to be dwelling on the events of 98 and the statement that Joe made about wishing he did more.

thats good, it annoyed me that Golic went off after Jay left. I thought Greeny was much more fair and I am glad Smith took that stance. I understand people wishing others had done more to stop them, but I find it hard to blame any of the individuals that made mistakes in the handling of JS. I just can't find malicious intent by anyone.

    I just don't like SAS.

I will agree that he was under control, for him at least.

I hate him. That's why I was so shocked that he was reasonable and gave Jay a chance to explain.

  • I thought smith was fair. He has his opinion and is willin to change that upon new light.

I have no issues with that mindset. I have an issue with golic who won't change the mind regardless of new information

I wrote that before the follow up. That said, I think the reaction is fair from Stephen A. He's not saying Joe covered anything up. He was open to new facts. But he is saying Joe, in his position, should have done more. He should have followed up. Whether I agree or disagree with his opinion, it's a valid opinion to have, unlike the whole cover up thing which has no basis of evidence.

None of us really know what we would have done in the situation, but there are a number of people who think they would have followed up, and pushed for a more thorough investigation. Since we don't have the benefit of being there in the moment, with the knowledge that those just have, we can only guess what we would have done.

I believe very few people would have done more. It's not our nature to call police on respected people unless we are sure. That's why they had the whole "see something say something" campaigns, as many people don't. We've all watched people had too much to drink get in a car, and I'm sure we'll all regret it if they kill someone, with the benefit of hindsight. But since we have hindsight in this case, it's impossible to know what we would have really done, and I can't blame people for thinking (hoping) they would have done more.

Most wouldn't have done more for a different reason. I told the story once before on here, but I was brought a serious accusation at work once by a female employee directed at one of my male employees. I basically did what Joe did, called a quick meeting with President and HR, reported what I was told - I didn't see anything either. The response? Thanks for reporting, this is a very serious issue and will be investigated thoroughly, and this is a private matter now between those involved and the investigation and authorities if warranted, we'll let you know if we have any more questions or actions needed from you -- basically, you're not involved unless needed and it isn't your right to but in from here on out.

After that, nothing happened more (from an outward perspective, plenty happened internally) and both employees stayed on board. What do I do? I can't go to President or HR and ask how it turned out? I could only ask the employees if all was well in a roundabout way and was told yes. What if 6 months later the guy turns out to be a rapist and they pointed to this incident, did I cover it up? Should I have done more? What would it have been?

This is the ignorant response from Golic and others, everybody "knew" he was a sex offender and they covered it up -- NO, they didn't know and once it's handed up the chain, not only is there little more you can do, there is little more you are allowed to do.

This is why there are few leaders and many followers in this world, and that the followers all know without equivocation that they would do everything differently and everything right if they were in charge, yet they lack the mental capacity to understand even a single dilemma in this very situation. It ain't black and white like the ignorant masses think....

  • Well Jay was on with Skip Bayless and Stephen A.

Jay still didnt give a good enough explanation for me as to why Joe didn't do more. Jay's argument was Joe followed University protocol. In my opinion, you still talk to your superiors but put a call into the Police. Nothing i heard from Jay changes that.

Also, while Jay said Jerry didnt attend bowl games, practices etc, he said Sandusky used the weight room. How in the world is this allowed? And Joe had 100% oversight over this and it could have been stopped.

I am sorry but if joe called the police based on what mcqueary told him, he would have been laughed at. Not only was he told no crime was committed, he didnt even witness it.

Not sure this is the thread to reopen the debate. But....

I've addressed part 1 before. Edtee did as well.

Sandusky's use of the weight room was specifically part of his retirement contract. Not being a lawyer, I can't say for certain, but it's doubtful Joe could just revoke that. I suspect he could have asked someone else to do it, and there would need to be lawyers involved beyond that.

I guess you don't care to read or understand facts either. Erickson is the one that allowed Sandusky to use the weight room and other facilities. He signed off on it as part of his retirement package.

As far as i know since he was emeritus, granted by Rodney erickson...only erickson could revoke that.

With that status he is entitled to use i facilities without question, an office and email.

It wasn't just the emeritus status, but a retirement package specifically with certain benefits above and beyond that status. According to the Collegian, those included:

"four free football season tickets for the rest of his life and the opportunity to purchase four more within the 35-yardlines; two men’s and women’s basketball season tickets for the rest of his life; lifetime use of a locker, weight rooms, fitness facilities and training room in the East Area locker room; a five-year agreement, subject to renewal, between Sandusky and Penn State to work collaboratively in community outreach programs such as The Second Mile that “provide positive visibility to the University’s Intercollegiate Athletics Program,” as well as a 10-year agreement, subject to renewal, giving him an office and telephone in the East Area locker room."

If you guys are right about that as part of Jerry's retirement package it sure should've been publicized more by the Paternos. Not saying you are wrong, it makes sense but i don't think anyone did a good job of publicizing it. Certainly would help Joe's cause.

  • Bruce Murray Maddog radio has been more than fair. He is asking callers to consider if they were on a jury and being able to prove what Joe knew.

Jay did say that to Mike and Mike. He specifically said that was done and allowed by the Provost, now President, Rodney Erikson.

  • Colin Cowherd is amazing...he just went on a 15 minute rant with more wrong information than I've ever heard. He made some really dumb comments about state college area that are kind of insulting. I've never heard more bad information by a "credible" source. I mean he insinuated that joe and jerry ate and vacationed together! Went on to say next to Jerry's wife, Joe was his next closest friend! How can he say this publicly?
