The thing that I don't get is Jay references the 2001 incident like Joe had no idea of what was going on and was shocked by what MM told him. However, if was aware of the incident in 1998 and following it closely like the FR mentions, then there should have been a red flag in some way. Simply saying that "I wish I had done more" is not enough.

I also think he lied when he said that "none of us knew" in the program.

There were definetly "red flags" that were missed or failed to be acted on by a lot of people. Some of which were trained professionals. The '98 incident was investigated by trained professional. JS adopted and had a number of foster children. The adoption and foster care process involves background checks and investigations by trained professionals. Those involved with the Second Mile........ JS deceived a number of individuals.

Jay and the family have done a pretty good job with interviews and statements to this point.

I have a hard time believing this. At a minimum, Joe and MM knew. In the extreme, everyone knew. If Jerry was told not to use the locker rooms, don't you think word would get out in some way, shape or form even if it's gossip? People talk and with the longevity of coaches at Penn State, i have a hard time believing that no one had a clue of what was going on. Naturally, I could definitely see why Jay was clueless

I have not read the entire Freeh Report yet, but I am about 60 pages into it. The one thing that I think people have to keep in mind is that the Freeh Report assumes that Curley told Joe the details of the 1998 investigation. In his email, Curley states that he was keeping Coach informed. What Freeh, does not know is exactly what Curley told Joe about the investigation. Freeh is basing his conviction of Joe based on the fact that Joe was informed about the ongoing investigation. Isn't it possible that Curley was not being honest with Joe about the investigation? I hope that what Curley told Paterno about the investigation comes out in Curley's trial.

I think Jay did a very good job under difficult circumstances. I've said all along that judgment needs to wait for all the facts to come out. There is more to this story to come, and I for one, will wait to see what happens before leaping to condemn anyone, but especially a man who has a 60+ year record of of good things. I recognize that Joe is not a saint. It's entirely possible from what we know today that he had a failure in this, but I am not convinced that all the information is out. The Freeh report to me really does seem to be a re-interpretation of what we already knew, and there are a number of key people that were not part of this process due to ongoing legal proceedings. I'm willing to wait and see what comes from the upcoming trials. Further, I believe there are at least 2 or 3 ongoing investigations that may help to clarify things.

Hopefully jay is too stupid to ever comprehend that he was the reason joe covered this up.

Of course that's part of the reason.

Joe steps down and then his son gets let go right away. Dad had to beg and plead with JMU and UVA to get him jobs that he royally screwed up. (Nothing like being seen at a PSU game when you're supposed to be on a recruiting visit.)

Joe held on so Jay and the kids and grand-kids could all stay nice and close to him and Sue.

What does JS situation in 2001 have to do with Joe stepping down? If he goes to child services, the police, etc. and reports it in 2001 why does he have to step down? I don't get the logic. By covering it up he risks himself and his family more than any negative that can come to the program or himself from reporting it. It probably does the opposite and makes him look good, that he is even willing to turn in a previous coach. And he certainly wasn't trying to protect JS - supposedly they did not get along at all by 2001.

Except at least in '98 they actually found and talked to the kid.

I guess if it was Jay's kid he would have said, "Ah it's just that crazy uncle JerBear with my grandson in the shower....at night...alone....what a crazy guy"

I can't believe how many people are still apologizing and deflecting. It's sad.
