James caps freshman campaign

This kid really started becoming a player down the stretch. Can't wait to see how he continues to be used going forward. Talk about a mismatch nightmare. 6'7" 265 and can run.

    He isn't done growing.

  • I honestly thought he would redshirt and turn into a tackle down the road. Under the old regime I think that's how he would have panned out with BOB you can't have enough TE's.

Penn State 7x National Champs, home of the winningest college football coach to ever grace a sideline.

  • Kid is younger than me & is 6'7", 265. 6 FOOT SEVEN INCHES! Damn, son.

Made a few costly mental mistakes (missed block on extra pt. against UVA, messing up which side of line to line up on when McGloin was hurrying everyone to the line this past weekend & subsequently allowing a play to be reviewed) this season but nothing that isn't fixable & hey, he does have a helluva name.

TONS of potential with this kid. Reminds me of a cross between Heath Miller & Gronk... in other words, a complete animal. Briefly met him at Taco Bell in town one night when I was rather intoxicated. Nice kid IIRC.

  • Carter, James, Wilkerson, AB..............

We are about to become TEU.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • We really are lucky with the TEs we have. Gilliam, James, Lehman, Carter, Wilkinson, and now AB...I really don't know why any TE wouldn't want to come to PSU. Bill O'Brien is the Guru of Tight Ends.

Also, shout out to Coach Strollo. Although OB certainly is the one getting these guys involved, Strollo is the one coaching them up. He deserves some credit too.

  • Its time to tag TE-U along with LB-U to PSU's name. Like someone mentioned earlier, if you are a hot shot TE, why in the world would you not come to PSU.. Come to TE-U (soon to be) and go straight to the NFL, with hard work and knowlege from these outstanding coaches.

He looked a bit stiff on film, not terribly instinctive, and I always figured his listed size was exaggerated........ well, he's every bit of 6'7/270, just a monster of a human being, has gotten even faster despite the added weight, and is obviously learning the position quite quickly. He's still a bit stiff, won't beat you with smooth or fancy moves, but who cares, he's a tight end, a huge one, and he can flat out move if he gets a bit of time to get going. And, he can block, and should end up being a great blocker. Count me as surprised too.

This is why I don't put much stock in the opinions of "professional film evaluators." I actually liked his tape and he showed solid ability after the catty, and his size showed up on tape as well.

Was he the fallback option after the TE from oil city committed to ND? Forget his name.

Wasn't James the fallback option for JP holtz who was committed to PSU and left for pitt? JP Holtz by the way had a pretty nice season himself for a freshmen TE.

James will no question be an nfl player. Amazing size very good hands and he is quick.

I think Kylce Carter will be a NFL player as well and perhaps 1-2 more TE's currently on the roster... nice depth right now at TE and Breneman enrolling early, sure am looking forward to the next 4-5 years at the TE position.

  • For those who know - how much weight do you think James will be carrying when he's a senior and looking at the league? ESPN has Gronk listed at 6'6'' 265 while PSU has James listed at an inch taller and a pound less ALREADY. He's just such a freak so young I'm wondering what he'll be like as a 22 year old man.

If he can stay at the same weight and get stronger, that would be perfect. Otherwise perhaps another 10 pounds or so.

  • Actually James committed before J.P. Holtz so that is incorrect.

James wasn't a fallback for Holtz. IMO James was and still is the better prospect. I thought more highly of James when we had both committed.

Unless one is a freak of nature, and I'm talking about a can't miss, I really hope we dont recruit a TE in 2014... We could use that slot for other positions.

Not sure I agree with this. We lose Lehman and Gilliam after 2013 and Carter will be a senior in 2014 while James will be a junior. So, yeah, PSU doesn't need a freshmen TE to come in and play right away in 2014 but we will be losing a lot of TEs after the 2013-14 seasons and witht he offense we run, we need to have at least 4 TEs ready to play.

  • Wonder what J.P. Holtz is thinking?

    On second thought, who cares!

From memory, Kent Taylor and Jesse James were the first two tight ends offered by Penn State out of the 2012 class.

Really? That's a cool fun fact. I remember him saying that he had the offer for awhile and was just "waiting" on the perfect time to commit to PSU...or at least make his commitment known to the public.

Kent Taylor would have been a freak in this O. At Florida, it looks like he played in two games and had one catch for 0 yards.

Carter will be a Sr in 2015 - he was a Fr this year
