James caps freshman campaign

Freshman Jesse James has come a long way in a year, when he enrolled at Penn State without knowing who his head coach would be.

  • An embarrassment of riches at the TE position, and an offense that knows how to use the TE.

Mr. James is positioning himself for a shot at the NFL with his "lucky" choice.

  • I have a feeling there is going to be a lot of gun pulling over the next 3 seasons!

  • This kid really started becoming a player down the stretch. Can't wait to see how he continues to be used going forward. Talk about a mismatch nightmare. 6'7" 265 and can run.

  • Another testament to what quality coaching can produce. He was a raw talent when he arrived from South Allegheny J/S High School. As a graduate of the same high school, I assure you that the coaching and development he received there was minimal. Makes his fellow Gladiators proud and we're ecstatic that he didn't end up at Pitt. biggrin

And what is great about that is that PSU should not have any problems bringing in clones of James in the future! Did PSU finish out the season being the #1 TE pass catching school in the nation? I know I read that they were leading the nation in that stat after the 8th or 9th game of the season.

Yes, we finished #1 on regular season. BY FAR, #1, and it wasn't even close.

  • How awesome that he came out of high school at 6'7 270 lbs. true definition of a man child.

  • James really showed some nice athletic ability this year. I didn't expect him to move nearly as well as he does. This guy could really turn into a beast with that combo of size, athletic ability and hands. I can't over state how impressed I am with what BOB and the staff did with the TE position and the offense as a collective this year.

  • One more time for 2012.... The Outlaw!!!

I'm going to enjoy watching him play over the next 3 years.

  • I remember when a lot of us (myself included) were scratching our heads when he got offered and committed almost immediately and weren't too happy about it. What a difference a year can make. Seems like a great kid, couldn't be happier for him.

  • Growing up in WNY, Rob Gronkowski was my son's best buddy till we moved in 6th grade, so I've followed his career. Believe it or not, I think James has some of the same attributes as Robbie. Both are very big and deceptively fast, with good hands. NOt sure if I saw James drop a ball all year. One difference is Rob was a very good basketball player in HS, not sure if James was a basketball player.

In any case, congrats to JoePa and staff for recruiting him, OB and staff for developing him, and the kid for working hard.

He looked a bit stiff on film, not terribly instinctive, and I always figured his listed size was exaggerated........ well, he's every bit of 6'7/270, just a monster of a human being, has gotten even faster despite the added weight, and is obviously learning the position quite quickly. He's still a bit stiff, won't beat you with smooth or fancy moves, but who cares, he's a tight end, a huge one, and he can flat out move if he gets a bit of time to get going. And, he can block, and should end up being a great blocker. Count me as surprised too.

  • James will no question be an nfl player. Amazing size very good hands and he is quick.

Yeah, I'm pretty shocked he did all this in his true freshman year, even if he was an EE. Credit to both him and the coaches. Great to see this kind of early development.

  • If there was one thing the previous staff could do was recruit TE regardless of star rankings. Quarless, Shuler, Carter, James, Gilliam ect.

Adding Wilkerson to the mix next year is almost unfair.

    Blissios

  • Unless one is a freak of nature, and I'm talking about a can't miss, I really hope we dont recruit a TE in 2014... We could use that slot for other positions.

  • He dropped one right in front of me against Indiana, a quick out near midfield, west side. Not to long after he corralled a pass over there and turned it into something like a 40-yard gain, dashing up/down the sideline (no one wants to tackle him in the open field). He was split way wide on many plays that day. I was amazed the coaches had the confidence to take a 6-7, 264 true frosh and use him in such a manner, and I can only recall one other pass all year that might possibly have been recorded as a drop. Seems humble and hard-working. Perfect. Stay that way and the future is yours.

    What am I, omniscient?

I have to say, I was hard on the former staff for offering this kid. Well ... I was wrong. He had a tremendous frosh season and will continue to get better. He will get a shot at the NFL, if he continues to develop. I hope he doesn't put too much weight on.

Was he the fallback option after the TE from oil city committed to ND? Forget his name.

  • I actually liked James tape and was fine with the offer. Carter, on the other hand, I was very disappointed in. I am stunned by his ability.

I remember seeing his natural hands (Carter), and it looked like he didn't grow into his body yet... I was a little disappointed at his ranking. I thought he was a solid 3 star. Since then I have learned that most star rankings are BS. I love that we have so much talent, when everyone in America thought we had none.

I felt the same way. I was pretty high on James when most weren't, but wasn't impressed with Carter at all. Both ended up being very, very good prospects... go figure. Glad it ended up that way instead of both being busts!

  • I think people wanted Colin Thompson and Kent Taylor as the TE's in that class instead of Jesse James, IIRC.
