I've hesitated to post this ...

  • I was having a conversation with a friend on Thursday as he was heading to London for the Olympics. He is an partner at a major law firm in DC and he casually says to me as he is about to board his plane that "we were approached by some major players (he didn't say who) who are interested in pursuing legal action against the Freeh Group over that F job at PSU"... This guy isn't a PSU grad. For a while I thought he was screwing around with me ...Any attorneys out there is this even a remote possibility? My boy won't be back for 2 or 3 weeks and that's why I thought maybe he just wanted to screw with me.

  • Penn State hired Freeh and his firm to conduct the investigation. How could you peruse legal action against a firm because you didn't like what they found? If there was slander or perjury of some sort done by one of the many authors/investigators, that may be a different story, but I don't think PSU would come out on the good side of this one if they ever did what your friend is suggesting. Public perception is already bad enough, could you imagined the headlines that would come from this?

  • Well I mean the report basically accused Paterno/Spanier/Shultz/Curley of covering up for a pedophile. They would probably have a decent case for defamation.

I don't think he would have been talking about the school in this case...more likely individuals. I'm sure there could be case for libel...even if minute, especially given the way Freeh jumped to conclusions.

No, your right......damn, wasn't thinking. It would almost certainly have to involve individules. Bad job of reading on my part.

Exactly. There were a bunch of conclusions considering no input from those accused.

This. The evidence doesn't actually show a cover-up of any kind, but rather extreme ineptitude. Freeh's screwup (he did it at the FBI and FIFA as well) will surely open up some legal avenues.

Again I should state that from my brief conversation that I didn't take what he said as the University taking action against Freeh but an outside source. Also, from the way he mentioned it I got the impression that they wouldn't touch it...( or else he probably doesn't mention it to me)

Sorry, When I used the term "players" I was not referring to football players. He didn't say who it was... but BTW one of my neighbors (a PSU guy works with Wick Sollers)...

  • The law firm could be called in, just in case of what the NCAA does.

    This.

Seriously...do you guys really want to see Louis Freeh sitting in open court, day after day, outlining every piece of evidence, all the emails about Paterno, etc., etc.? You really want to see PSU continue to be drug through the mud on a daily basis on the national stage while your little lawsuit plays out?

Go ahead. Continue to wallow in denial. So many around the country already despise the environment at Penn State that enabled this monster. Your lawsuit will only ensure that, rather than rehabilitating Penn State's image, you will continue to be a pariah.

If it means we really get a independent/non biased answer as to what transpired...yes. Don't you find it the least bit curious that Freeh came to the same conclusions after 8 months as our BOT came to in November? Without talking to any of the main characters involved? Seems at least curious to me...As if he were already working from a conclusion. Now that doesn't mean that I don't believe that PSU (4) botched this completely and stained all of our reputations in the process.

From day one I have not cared at all what outsiders thought. It's our school, mind your own business and stay the F out is my opinion. This doesnt affect them in ANY way. Too many people care about what others think, I don't.
