There is no way SC > PA. Its easy to think of the top guys that have come from that state recently, but PA is bigger so more HS football is player here and certainly more D-1 kids come from PA. Historically, its not even close. Rivals gives a top 40 list for PA but only a top 30 for SC because it doesn't have the depth of a bigger state.

GA, LA, and NJ could certainly have a case in recent years but PA has TRADITIONALLY been better.

Ya when you include Namath Kelly and Montana.

  • Yes lets go back to before I was born to judge states. VA has better talent, and so does GA. Obviously the big three in CA, FL, TX. Louisiana per capita is likely the best. MD/PA/NJ is a toss up at best for PA. OH also better. Carolinas combined take out PA, but idk individually yet.

Agree with this. I would still toss VA into the toss up any given year of PA/ NJ/ MD. If we are talking elite talent at the top, MD probably wins out, but with how small it is they can't compete depth wise in a class usually.

I thought GA was the best per capita state?

Regardless, LA is very fertile recruiting ground, and NJ is better than PA.

PA used to be pretty good, specifically Western PA, but now that people are moving south and the population gets less and less dense relative to the South. WPA is having a revival of sorts the past few years, but it still doesn't stack up to other states we're comparing them to.

Ya when you include Namath Kelly and Montana.

What makes a state better than another is depth because judging by just the top tier talent is too volatile of an indicator. That changes year to year.

Rivals has a top 100 ranking for:
    Texas, FL, Cali,

    Top 75 for:
    GA:

    Top 60 for:
    Ohio

    Top 40 for:
    PA, LA, AL

I'm not saying this is an all encompassing determinant of the prestige of a state, but its an indicator of how a recruiting service views the depth of a state. A lot more HS football is played in PA compared to NJ. Just because their top guys are often better than PA's doesn't mean its a better football state. Same with VA and SC.

  • those numbers look about in line with what everyone has been saying except the additions of Alabama near the 6th/7th spot and then a couple of the lower numbers seem to be pretty fluid but PA is definitely in the 8-10 range still. NJ is probably still on the list at 9 or 10 but has lowered numbers due to lower population in the state than some others. Virginia that low is surprising.

    We can do either....

I can tell ya bold statements made in this thread were exaggerations it seems.

yep....those numbers shown are ratio numbers. Now, no one really believes Texas football is 9th best but it does give it a little perspective on the quality of the HS football across the entire state. The southeast easily seems to be the cream of the crop in both categories and that has shown on the field. NJ being left off that list is surprising and funny. Seems NJ is the state most PSU fans overrate, not PA.

  • Anywho, I go by tiers personally..and am not fussed with PA guys, or some overwhelming Pa-pride. I like PA players to do well yes, but dont care about 'locking it down' so much as others.

    Florida/Cali/Texas
    Ohio/Alabama/Georgia/LA
    PA/Virginia/MD/NJ
    NC/Illinois/Michigan/SC

Tier 1 has the greatest overall gap.
Tier 2 solid over tier 3 most times
Tier 3 mostly over tier 4 most times

When going top heavy (NFL) it is very similar looking at the last decade or so

    1) TX/FL/CA
    2) GA/OH/LA
    3) PA/VA/AL/NC/MI/SC/NJ/IL
    4) MS/MD/NY

I think that is spot on. No doubts PA was a top 5 producing state in its heyday right alongside Ohio. Sucks that we have dropped off but that's how it goes. Ohio might see a similar decline the next 20 years, let's hope PA doesn't.

  • As said before I'm am glad we are getting top prospects out of NJ. But I'm sorry they do not have better football prospects than Pennsylvania. Some on here act as if NJ is the FL,CA,Tx of the northeast or something. NJ has been improving but is still not on the level of states like PA or Ohio for that matter. Same thing goes for Maryland glad we get good prospects from there, but still think PA is better. I'm not being a PA homer and I'm glad we get good prospects out of state. I won't mind if we dont dominate Pa if we get big time prospects else where.
