I KNOW we can put up 40+ on them. Why not? Our offense is coming off a bye week so everybody will be fresh and rejuvenated. Before the bye week, our offense was finally starting to hit it's stride. If we can eliminate the 5-10 drops we have been having per game, the sky is the limit with this offense. I honestly think that we will be throwing the ball at will to start the game vs. Iowa and with great success on Saturday night. Once we get a comfortable lead, we'll start pounding the ball in the run game.

Call me a homer or whatever but I'm starting to get a feel for this team and like what I'm seeing on the field.

Why not? Probably because PSU hasn't scored 40 on an FBS opponent since Indiana and Michigan in 2010. The same Michigan team that had arguably the worst defense in school history. This is a road game against an Iowa team with a good defense. We didn't score 40 against Navy or Illinois this year, what makes you think we can against Iowa?

I say 21-17 PSU, 24 if we get lucky and hit a short FG on like 4th and goal from the 9.

I totally agree with you, but with some of the scores, you would think we were facing Navy again. We aren't that significantly better defensively. Better, IMO yes, but significantly better? Nope.

Very valid point but that is where i feel carter could be a major factor for us, just hope we can find a way to take advantage.

I think Carter will get at least five catches this week. Tight ends will be featured.

Although I agree with you, using past history is pretty void now.

Since 2010 includes the 6 games this year, each one against far inferior defenses to Iowa, in which we did not score 40. If we didn't score 40 against the crap defenses we've played so far, it's almost certainly not happening this weekend in Iowa.

Given the lack of a passing threat from their QB, we will be overly attentive to their run game. Our coaches know as we'll as we do, that teams have had more success on the edge. So I am expecting a completely loaded box and that the defensive ends force things inside. I can see all 3 LBers - 4 if you include Hull - with BIG tackle numbers. This game plays right into our strength. I can't wait to see it play out.

PSU is the better team IMO. If you would have read my posts, you could grasp I was saying that. So, the fact I don't think its going to be a 41-10, or 38-13 blowout, its construed as negative? PSU should win, but if its a blowout like some are predicting, I will be stunned beyond belief.

Penn State very well may not score 40 on Iowa this weekend, but I don't think the fact that we haven't done it since Indiana and Michigan in 2010 is relevant in making that case.

Regardless of points scored by this year's offense, it's utterly clear that this is a much more dynamic offense than we've had in a while, and they only thing holding them back from putting up 40-50 on the teams they've played so far is learning curve of all new systems and mistakes.

Each week it is clear that they are getting more and more comfortable with the new systems/schemes, and they make a few less mistakes.

One of these weeks, it's going to come together, and they're going to hang whatever they want on the opponent. There is no reason this week couldn't be that week. I'm not saying it will be, but it's a VERY reasonable possibility.

No it's not. If we were playing Illinois again this week, I'd agree. Same with Northwestern, Navy, Temple or Virginia. But Iowa has a very good defense. The others aren't sure what defense means. That's like saying the defense is putting it together after allowing between 3-10 points for a few weeks straight against poor offenses and then saying we could probably get a shutout against OSU. Sure, it could conceivably happen, but the chances are very small.

  • I hate to be a Debbie Downer but I have a bad feeling about this game. I think a combination of rust from coming off the bye week, away game at Iowa at night, PSU players looking ahead to OSU, and going for it on 4th down finally catches up to BOB and PSU leaves some points off the board. Iowa wins 21-17.

What makes you think Iowa has such a great (or very good) defense? It's not like they've played a bunch of offensive powerhouses.

I don't see any evidence that their defense is any better than NW's. Both gave up 13 to Minny, NW gave up 41 to Syracuse but that was week 1, Iowa gave up 32 to C. Michigan just three weeks ago, NW held Indiana to TWENTY less points than did OSU. And we put up 39 on NW, with a good many points left on the field.

Iowa's defense looks to be right there in the ballpark with NW's. IMO we will be the best offense that Iowa will have faced -- and maybe by a lot.

We'll find out tomorrow. That's the beauty of these debates. :-)
