  • I am really excited about this Coach and can't wait, but I'll have to, to see what kind of team he puts on the field. I just hope my excitement is not unfounded.

    Thanks Sean!

  • Question Sean.

    First impression of BOB?

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • He is talking the talk and acting the part of the PSU head coach. He is winning the Nittany Nation over.

  • He should be excited, as should alot of us. If you think about some of the talent we have coming back and the sked, I think we could contend again for the Leaders Division, given that OSU can't bowl or play for the B1G title. Our front seven will be very good with Mauti and Hill providing the leadership, and the secondary, while a bit green, could be better than we think. Offensively the biggest question is clearly at QB and OL, and will dictate how the team plays. I think our skill positions are in good shape with Brown, Smith, Kersey, Drake, Belton, Redd, Haplea and Dukes. We should have enough speed on the edges to make some plays. I can see Brown, Mauti, and Hodges becoming early to mid round NFL draft picks.

  • "I'd love to be here for the rest of my career," said O'Brien. "It's a very unique place, a unique setting, a great school where you can combine football and academics and win games and graduate players. This is a place, to me, where I know my family and I would love to be for a long time."

Loved that quote and I hope he can produce on the field so he can live that dream of being here long term. My biggest worry with BOB is his desire to maybe go back to the NFL as a head coach in a few years if he's pretty successful here.

One of his sons has a severe disability and needs stability. Having a special needs son of my own I think he's sincere when he says "I know my family and I would love to be here for a long time."

Know that he hasn't produced a thing for PSU yet but I'm a fan of this guy. thumbsup

  • So Fitz, what's the inside of the coach's office look like? You must not know what to do with all this access. Next thing you know you'll be watching practices..........

  • Sorry guys I got a little choked up at the "we've got a chance to be a good football team. We've got a long way to go...." (sniff sniff)

I know it's coach-speak, but just like he threw it in there for JoePa.

    C'MON SPRING PRACTICE!!!!!

Haha, I was just going to post the same thing. How many times have we heard Joe say that?

I am normally not an emotional guy but no way I hold together the day of "the tribute". But I am sure I won't be alone.

  • Play

    We are.... Penn State...Great Version!

Play it at work and annoy your Pitt grad coworkers. (If you remember when we used to play them..) A very long sequence of the We are..Penn State cheer.. Good sound quality. I think it lasted through an entire TV timeout at the Penn State v Michigan game on 10/14/06.

  • "I feel great about this team," he said. "I'm not going to get into specifics, but the film that I've watched and the workouts that I've seen, we've got a chance to be a good football team. We've got a long way to go, we've got to have a good spring practice, we've got to have a good training camp, but I feel really good about the team we have."

Boy, if that's not a JoePa shout out, I don't know what is.

Thanks for that, Coach O'Brien. Those little things are nice.

  • Nice interview, Sean, thanks so much!

I don't know if I never focused on other coaches saying this before, or what, but I cannot ever remember any other coaches who are interviewed consistently stressing the message BOB delivers in every single interview -- playing winning football AND developing good students/graduating students. That is one traditional worth continuing!

  • Wow. The more I hear Coach O'Brien speak the more I find he seems to be the things many of hoped for in a HC. Humility , confidence and perserverance seem to emanate from this man constantly. Sean , do you know if he is going to tour the ENTIRE campus so he can get a real feel for ALL the students/alumni that comprise his fan base?
