  • Confirms what I thought about him for awhile now (even when we were gunning for him as a HC. Can't believe I lowered my standards and morals so we could get him and win.), slimy but wins until things go broke then he bails. He obviously negative recruits other schools and can only imagine the things he said about PSU to our recruits last recruiting season, late in the game.

You find out life's this game of inches, so is football. Because in either game, life or football-the margin for error is so small. -Pacino

  • Not surprised at all by that. Thanks for linking, Jeff.

  • Urban is a great coach at taking an established roster and molding them into winners. See what he did within two years at Bowling Green, Utah, and Florida. The jury is still out on his ability to build a sustained winner. See Florida's record these past two seasons with a roster recruited and developed by Meyer.

Unless he learned some lessons at Florida that he can apply at OSU, he is likely to follow the same trajectory in Columbus as in Gainesville.

  • What I find interesting....which is NOT at all suggesting Meyer is a good dude.....but why would Paterno have been so confident Meyer was a good guy if he wasn't? Joe was a pretty good judge of character, I thought. Was he simply fooled by Meyer's "sweet talking" too?

  • No wonder star players want to play for him. They can basically do what they want. Great read.

  • That was not a very good piece of journalism in my opinion. A bunch of stuff we already new and, nothing particularly ground breaking. Preferential treatment for star players!!!! No way!

The enabling is far beyond anything I've ever heard of at places like USC, Bama, and even Ohio State. There's actually a lot of confirmation in there, when all we had before was rumor. What's brand new, to me at least, was his roster management. He and his AD went out of their way to criticize Bama, LSU, etc about oversigning and roster management. And now we learn that he was very coarse with that.

thank the football gods he did not end up at Penn State.

Absolutely. Let's remember that Joe wasn't exactly the Joe of the 80's when he struck up a friendship with Meyer. He fell for "the act".

  • I've never really bought the Urban Meyer "coaching genius" hype. He's a good recruiter, but something is clearly wrong with his system. To go from a team that wins two national championships in three years to just winning six or seven games a year tells me he can't sustain a consistent winner. They had the makings of a dynasty in Florida, and Urban Meyer blew it. Then he headed for the hills when he realized the aura he built around his "coaching genius" reputation was about to be destroyed.

I think most of us are assuming Meyer is a slimy person based on his slimy behavior as a coach, but I'd bet Joe didn't bother reading about any of that so only knew what he saw personally and by what he saw of UF on the field. For example, he certainly had better things to do than waste time reading this article.

Meyer could be very charming in person and seem like a great guy, so if that's what Joe saw then that formed his opinion. And I don't see any reason to believe that Meyer's behavior personally would hint at all at his sleazy behavior as a coach -- just like I'm sure the folks who socialized with the guys who ran Enron thought they were were wonderful people.

  • The story is getting some legs...retweeted by Stewart Mandel. Doubt ESPN jumps on it as they employed the guy. Interested to see where this all goes...if anywhere.

have to disagree here - think there's lot of details here that weren't previously known.

    1) having former players recruit for ohio state
    2) percy harvin's altercation with his coach
    3) the fake injuries for the star players to disguise the positive test
    4) throwing florida under the bus
    5) specific example of telling a kid to move on

as opposed to the usual "trust me - meyer is shady" posts, we get an article with concrete examples.

I'm sure once he ditches OSU (his home state program) in a few years and leaves it in a bind like UF is in right now, more of this stuff will surface. I'm interested in hearing/seeing what happens to all these "super stars" he's recruiting to go to OSU. He's stock piling talent again to get the job done in a few years. Now the question remains, does he bolt when the going gets tough, once again?

He's not really doing anything that Jim Tressell didn't do with recruiting. JT was one of the best recruiters in America, but more importantly, he knew how to manage a football team better than almost anyone. TP aside. Ohio State, IMO, was the best program on the field in the 2000s, which I measure by consistency. It's going to be incredibly difficult for Meyer to improve on that.

One of my biggest annoyances with CFB fans these days is their utter disregard for history, and even recent history.

I'm with you song. The article, while not particularly ground breaking, did confirm allot of hearsay. Time will certainly tell the story to say if he learned any lessons from it all. The word with some of our local sports guys is he's turned over a new leaf. He's definitely going to have the horses over the next few years so I guess we'll see what kind of coach he really is.

  • For anyone questioning Paterno's judgement in his public Urban love-fest prior to the Outback Bowl, I wouldn't read too much into that. Joe barely knew Urban prior to that game. What's he supposed to say about the opposing coach that's won two national championships in the past four years? Call the guy a slimeball? Have we ever known Joe to give the other team bulletin board material like that prior to the game?

I think Joe was just playing along with the media lovefest for Urban in his last game. No need to kick the guy on his way out the door. But I'll conceed that Joe probably layed it on a little thick in return when Meyer said nice things about him.
