What I find interesting....which is NOT at all suggesting Meyer is a good dude.....but why would Paterno have been so confident Meyer was a good guy if he wasn't? Joe was a pretty good judge of character, I thought. Was he simply fooled by Meyer's "sweet talking" too?

That was not a very good piece of journalism in my opinion. A bunch of stuff we already new and, nothing particularly ground breaking. Preferential treatment for star players!!!! No way!

The enabling is far beyond anything I've ever heard of at places like USC, Bama, and even Ohio State. There's actually a lot of confirmation in there, when all we had before was rumor. What's brand new, to me at least, was his roster management. He and his AD went out of their way to criticize Bama, LSU, etc about oversigning and roster management. And now we learn that he was very coarse with that.

I've never really bought the Urban Meyer "coaching genius" hype. He's a good recruiter, but something is clearly wrong with his system. To go from a team that wins two national championships in three years to just winning six or seven games a year tells me he can't sustain a consistent winner. They had the makings of a dynasty in Florida, and Urban Meyer blew it. Then he headed for the hills when he realized the aura he built around his "coaching genius" reputation was about to be destroyed.

The story is getting some legs...retweeted by Stewart Mandel. Doubt ESPN jumps on it as they employed the guy. Interested to see where this all goes...if anywhere.

I'm sure once he ditches OSU (his home state program) in a few years and leaves it in a bind like UF is in right now, more of this stuff will surface. I'm interested in hearing/seeing what happens to all these "super stars" he's recruiting to go to OSU. He's stock piling talent again to get the job done in a few years. Now the question remains, does he bolt when the going gets tough, once again?

He's not really doing anything that Jim Tressell didn't do with recruiting. JT was one of the best recruiters in America, but more importantly, he knew how to manage a football team better than almost anyone. TP aside. Ohio State, IMO, was the best program on the field in the 2000s, which I measure by consistency. It's going to be incredibly difficult for Meyer to improve on that.

One of my biggest annoyances with CFB fans these days is their utter disregard for history, and even recent history.

I don't know how you read that article, and then sign on with that team.

For anyone questioning Paterno's judgement in his public Urban love-fest prior to the Outback Bowl, I wouldn't read too much into that. Joe barely knew Urban prior to that game. What's he supposed to say about the opposing coach that's won two national championships in the past four years? Call the guy a slimeball? Have we ever known Joe to give the other team bulletin board material like that prior to the game?

I think Joe was just playing along with the media lovefest for Urban in his last game. No need to kick the guy on his way out the door. But I'll conceed that Joe probably layed it on a little thick in return when Meyer said nice things about him.
