In state recruiting

  • How would everyone rate bobs recruiting n state ? He said a priority was to lock down the state-obviously the grade is incomplete, but iside dorm ab the state is not where zit needs to b recruiting wise- what grade would u give the the staff now on a scale from 1-10?

  • We lost AA and McG of the offered guys in state (off the top of my head). Holding well for DJ and Foster. Those two are big Pitt guys and will be hard pulls for anyone really. And we got Breneman, and a couple of solid players in Cothran and Nelson. Im not too worried, we sit in good position for the guys we really need.

That said locking down the state is way overrated for a school like PSU. PA talent is eroding every year and frankly overrated often, and we are a regional power. We need to have a presence from New England through the MidAtlantic first and foremost. And thats what our recruiting has been so far.

He isnt perfect, but hes doing well. Id say a 7, maybe 6. But it isnt that important, to me at least.

I've personally written off AA, but I don't think McG is fully lost quite yet.

In my opinion, locking down PA means getting 3 or 4 of the top 5 prospects. Then if there are lower-rated athletic prospects with upside (Nelson, Cothran), then get those. Basically, keep most of the top talent and some of the lesser talent. NJ is a state I'd like to see them lock down and VA is a state we need to infiltrate.

Being the main presence in MD, NJ and New England + being a presence in DC and VA >> Owning PA.

Not to mention having some presence in OH and the Rust Belt (Michigan, IN, and IL) which we have been showing a bit of, will be nice as well.

  • We will never lock down PA. Ever. And I don't really care either.

Simply put, WPA is a complicated region with a lot of kids having allegiances and interests in different places. Pitt will always get the kids who want to stay home for whatever reason. Some will head to Columbus, which is just as close as SC. Where I do expect us to be strong is in Central and Eastern PA. We seem to be doing that.

If we can dominate in NJ and Central-Eastern PA, do very well in MD, and pull a few good ones from VA each year, we will be golden.

Kelly lied to him. Said there was only one OL spot left. All the sudden you get another recently. That definately could change things.

  • Excellent posts about BOB. I will go with pleasantily suprised. I'm more impressed with the effort that has put in by the staff as a whole. I personsally think a solid season on the field this year, will make for a solid+ 2014 season and perhaps a couple late suprises for the 2013 class.

  • One thing we can all say, regardless of the class we sign, is we are no longer getting out worked in recruiting. It may take a couple of years for the recruiting to get back to where it should be but at least the effort in recruiting is there again. I think a quality product on the file this fall will help Obriens efforts a ton.

ahh i didn't see ND got another OT.

So what exactly is the point of taking 5 OT's in one class? I have to assume at least one is not going to be an OT. Kelly cant be that dumb.

  • If he gets david Williams, Isaah, and one of either foster or Dorian johnson I would give him a 9.5/10 that is a solid pull of our top talent in-state, and would have swayed at least one 5 star recruit from his "local" school. They will never get everyone they want for many reasons, have another dream school, depth charts, loyalty elsewhere, etc. but I agree with a previous poster that 5-6 of top ten talent, with 2-3 of them top 5 from pa is what the annual goal should be, and mix in some athletic kids with upside and they should be happy.

    PSUChris

  • it's simply unreasonable to expect to land every prospect we offer in-state...With that said, and with our need at LB and OT, I think it's unacceptable to lose AA to a conference foe, and it will be unacceptable to lose both Glinch and Johnson. If staff lands Johnson, I will say no harm done with losing Glinch. Maybe not in this first year, but in years to come we need to land the players like Rob Foster. I will echo what others are saying above...our keys to success in recruiting imo:
    ~ 6 of PA top 10-12
    ~ 3 of NJ top 10
    ~ 2 of MD/DC top 10
    ~ 2 of VA top 10
    ~ 2 of OH top 20
    ~ 2-3 national
~ filtered in with lower rated recruits the staff likes.

class outlined above will surely land us in top 15 categories more often than not and usually higher than that.

  • I'm not overly concerned with locking down our home state. It's likely never going to happen in today's day and age. If we can land most of the top talent in the state on a yearly basis and open up new avenues to other regions/states, I will be ecstatic.
