I think he might be getting at the ILL coach with the boy, which happens to be his son, and that maybe he thinks it's a hit at the JS thing, but he'd be wrong.... hence why I asked him to spell it out.

  • Valentine's Day ad...
    "No matter who's your Valentine..."
And shows a little boy with his shirt off being hugged by a grown man.
Not sure if serious. The entire undertone of the ad is a "Ped State" joke with the whole "no matter who your valentine is," insinuating that even if you like little boys you can bring them as your date to the game.

I'm not one who gets offended or nor do I give two shits, but it's pretty freaking clear that they're making a mockery of what happened.

  • Either it's intentional or the marketing crew that created that ad is clueless.

  • Better question is why is the kid shirtless in the first place?

Anyway, I think you're looking into it too much.

  • I don't think this was a pedo joke I just think it was a really really bad marketing attempt. They took a nice moment between a father and son and turned it very creepy. I think they were definitely trying to target families and put that picture there and I don't see how nobody said hey that doesn't make sense and looks weird. Bottom line is that ad is creepy and weird even if it says Illinois vs. Mich. I may be naive but I highly doubt people would be that stupid to overtly make a pedo ad especially with the coach and his son. (because really that would me your coach Groce is a pedo)

You're kidding right? Talk about seeing things that aren't there.

    1) That's the HC and his son after a huge upset of IU--#1 by the way.
    2) It's possible to have your son or daughter be your valentine, speaking as a father.
    3) It's their first home game after VDay.
    4) There's probably not a lot of interest in tickets to that game, so it's a promotion.

There is NOTHING about JS in that promo.... you're out looking for trouble if you think otherwise.

    GRS154

  • I've seen that, and I have no idea how that could be a mistake. I mean, either that entire marketing group who did that is completely naive or they did it on purpose. I just can't believe no one in that group thought about it, which makes me think its on purpose.

Personally I don't really care, but IMO it's absolutely on purpose. It IS the same university who gave us Tim Beckman. cool

  • Let's try to be above the fray in all of this, huh? There are enough a-holes and sick-o's out there who intentionally make these types of jokes and they're way more obvious about it. Let's not go looking for haters where they don't exist. It's tantamount to being afraid of your own shadow.

And tell me, are you the type of person who believes in ghosts, Area 51 aliens, the moon landing was staged, and that there were actually mountain lions on Mount Nittany at one point in time?

Seriously, there's no way this was on purpose and there's no way anyone would put a halt to this in the marketing department because it's a great recent moment of joy between the HC and his son. Period. Why even assume otherwise???

So you legitimately think no one in that department thought about what image they were putting out there combined with the team?

It's possible I'm reading too much into things, but it's valentines day. Not take your son to work day, and to put a boy with his shirt off with a grown man (I know it's his dad) on PSU day is a little too coincidental to me.

    PSU17

  • There still are mountain lions on Mt. Nittany.

Yes, I 100% believe that this had nothing to do with PSU, except that fact that we are not a great draw for tickets on the road (or at home frankly) and they needed a promotion to help sell tickets. And the picture remind Illini fans about a huge win over #1. That's it. The rest is you flinching for nothing.

It's not part of the discussion, but there absolutely were mountain lions on Mt. Nittany at one point of time. In the early 1800's PA actually had a bounty on mountain lions.

We will have to agree to disagree. That is way too coincidental to me and I think you're being naive.

Not going to dispute a fact from the 1800's since it would take too long to do right, but, either way, that's not where the mascot and nickname came from, not even in the slightest, and that's a common urban myth.

It's not in my nature to be naive.... I am a seasoned attorney and I'm paid to be skeptical, detail-driven, and not to take anything for granted. So, with the assumption that neither of us are being naive, I will agree to disagree.

    GRS154

  • I don't see it as having anything to do with Penn State, personally. Especially since it's their own basketball coach and his son.

But alright then. Show me all the other ads showing the shirtless kid being hugged. After all, it's a photo after a big upset win right? Lets see how many other promos in the past and future will feature something like that.

The point is, it's such a candid one of a kind type moment that was captured by a photographer..... if they use this picture again, then there are your examples. But you're not going to get shirtless kids in pictures very often regardless. It's one of a kind and they are still celebrating that victory--as they should.
