"IF" True (I don't trust the media) No More Fly-Overs

  • If true this sucks

  • Make sense. That sucks though. Always enjoy those things.

  • This will earn me a bunch of downvotes I'm sure, but I'm actually glad to hear this. Talk about a waste of taxpayer dollars when we're trillions in debt and still fighting people all over the globe.

And honestly, I've grown tired of the macho man military complex in America. Parading tanks and planes is something third world dictators do.

  • Considering Im staring at a furlough that will cost me 20% of my salary in roughly a month or so this is the least of my concerns.

Not to mention the furlough will directly impact the soldier's ability to properly protect themselves.

Congress is useless. see this coming and still took their little break. Priorities are comical.

Fly overs were cool yeah, but them going away is really the least of our problems.

    The Heel

  • How is a flyover any more expensive than a regular traing exercise?

    Cambria Nittany

  • Good imo. The amount we can cut in defense is ridiculous, and this is coming from a die hard republican.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

This is political spin and thanks for not trusting the media. I don't feel so alone in thought.

  • This is such an easy cut to make and should have been done a long time ago.

I am okay with a flyover for a huge event like the Rose Bowl, SuperBowl, etc. but having flyovers for any regular college or NFL game is a ridiculous waste of money.

It probably isn't, but at least with training there's some sort of budget for it (I hope). With flyovers it's hard to predict how many times a year it would be requested for large events.

I'm in the same boat, these are cool, but not really a huge deal in the grand scheme of things.

    PSU2001

  • Government is way to big and we are to far in debt. Time to start cutting. President could make this go much smoother if himself and congress were not trying to score points with it.

Be careful where you want to reduce it from. Cuts include cutting vital programs from the soldiers and their families (schooling with some schools losing their accreditation and mental health services to name just a few) and cut the budget that keeps their equipment at peak performance.

The cuts don't appear to be aimed at high dollar research programs. These cuts can realistically cost lives.

the soldiers that protect our country deserve much better.

    The Heel

  • Yep, gotta start cutting stuff. I'm perfectly fine with this.

  • I'm with ya Heel. Both me and my wife are Feds, our agency has been quiet on it's exact course of action. Not looking forward to it.

If you took the top 40 military budgets in the world and combined them, the USA still outspends them all. It's outrageous how much we spend on the military.

Big military is big government. And big government is big business. A big military needs guns and tanks and helicopters and bases and ammo and food and clothing and on and on. Congressmen are happy to bring all that big business back to their districts if they can get it. But the founders warned us about having standing armies. In fact they listed it as a grievance against England in the Declaration of Independence. The problem with a big military is you have to keep it busy so the population thinks it's necessary and doesn't question the spending. We have to go off seeking monsters to destroy. So we make up wars and go halfway across the planet to hunt down goat herders with AK-47's hiding in caves.

It has to end, folks. America is protected by allies to the north and south and oceans to the east and west. If we mind our own business and reclaim our position as the bastion of economic freedom we can enjoy peace and prosperity forever.

Our budget is higher because our tech is that much better. I happen to support giving our soldiers the finest products that give our soldiers any advantage they can have.

I believe that a soldier who is fighting for our country deserves to have his family being taken care of and going to a good school. To be able to come home and get the mental care that they may need.

And with north Korea and the unrest of the entire middle east i will agree to disagree that this is a good time to downsize and devalue our military.

Yes, the USA spends a lot on military. There's no need to exaggerate the concept though by lying about about statistics. If you added up the top 40 military budgets in the world the sum is significantly greater than USA military spending. And that's not taking into account the fact that many nations (China included) intentionally under-report their military spending. The correct way to analyze federal spending on a given program is to look at it as a % of GDP. When analyzed that way, USA military spending is outpaced by many other countries. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_military_expenditures

The programs that are bankrupting this country are the entitlement programs. That being said I don't have a problem with flyovers ending.

How dare you present facts and figures. Maybe the government can save some money and have a few drones fly over in formation instead? biggrin

Same here. Really not looking forward to it. Severe belt-tightening has already started. A bunch of my co-workers have spouses who are contractors that are staring lay-offs in the face too.
