  • The legal system routinely fines companies at a rate that will not destroy a company. It is done systematically and with purpose. When executives are caught conducting criminal behavior within the organization, we don't shut it down.

    This whole thing is just outrage one upmanship. Posnanski got it right early on with the media. Every is just trying to act like they are more against child molestation than the last guy.

    I wonder if all the reporters calling for the death penalty would feel the same way if this happened in their own company (ESPN, FOX, CNN). Think about it.......what if those same reporters calling for the death of Penn State football lost their jobs because they decided to shut down their company because of a couple executives that chose to make decisions similar to the Penn State situation. I wonder if they would think it was fair to lose their job as a (reporter, janitor, editor, parking attendant, etc.) because of someone else's poor decisions?

    it did happen to one of those companies....ESPN with the Syracuse scandal. May have turned out to be untrue, but still doesnt change the fact ESPN held onto what appeared to be a taped confesssion for 8 years, without reporting it.

    I mean if they truly cared about this problem instead of focusing their programing on rants and raves about what to do with PSU. They would:

    Hold, televised town-hall meetings talking about the hidden prevalence of child abuse in youth sports;

    Or use their connection to athletes (they only need them for funny commercials) to hold a series of PSAs to tell kids what to do and who to inform;

    The problem is that they are making this seem like an isolated innocent when it is not that at all. Due to this, PSU might produce more academic literature on the topic, but without a voice those will end up dusty on shelfs and kids will continue to get abused.

    It is interesting that the "king Football" mentality is what they are blaming for a lot of this but if you look at the main force driving that it has always been the media.

    I think Lion in Cbus is absolutely correct. People are using this to say hey - "we made sure they were punished and did the right thing" and then they can walk away feeling good about themselves and not think about a topic that no one wants to acknowledge.

    If you really want to make this better, don't try and make this go away, make sure the issue (child abuse, not PSU) stays at the forefront. Help kids come forward, help adults feel like they can come forward and question something they think is not right. I have said this before but people seem to think they would always do the right thing but the simple fact is, they very often don't. Ask a cop how many times they talk to people that were in a position to stop abuse and didn't. The number of people that will say I didn't want to falsely accuse or I just didn't want to believe it is astonishing. These people hate themselves for it or will steadfastly refuse to believe it cause they can not handle the truth of the matter.

    This is the attitude that needs to change and it won't be done by giving a football program the DP and walking away. The media has a tremendous amount of power, it would be nice to see them use it the right way here.

    of course. PSU doesn't deserve ANY of the blame.

    perhaps PSU should sue the media for defamation.

    I apologize if your lack of reading comprehension skills led you to misunderstand my post.

    I did not, and not will not ever say that PSU has no blame in this. The most powerful men in the school allowed a monster to continue abusing kids. The BOT has many questions to answer about what they knew and what they did imo. There are probably some that heard rumours or have stories like the janitors that saw something but were afraid of getting fired. The organization has plenty of blame and the civil courts are going to put a very large number on that blame.

    What the post was about was the now that the subject of child sexual abuse is recieving international attention perhaps the media that helped create these football gods could start to help victims of child abuse find it easier to come forward, make it more acceptable for peopel that suspect it to report it, raise awareness of how widespread this is and how destructive it is to our society. My point was that people bury their heads in the sand when child sexual abuse is suspects and as a result kids suffer. The media is in a better position than anyone to try and change this attitude and educate the public to this subject.

    I guess my question to you would be what have you done to prevent child sexual abuse, help a victim or raise awareness? It may be your lifes work and if so, good for you, but if you answer is that you came to a PSU website to bash people then I don't really know what to say. 500 000 or so PSU students and alumni knew as much as you about this a year ago. They are as horrified, if not more so becasue it happened at their school, about this as you and the rest of the public. They however are raising record amounts of money for organizations to help fight child sexual abuse and help victims. Again, how about you??

    From your moniker I would guess you think the 409 wins should be vacated, I could care less, I don't see how it helps stop child sexual abuse but fill your boots. You probably want the D.P. for PSU football, again, not sure how that helps the real problem but if it does, I can live with that. Personally I think that it would have the effect of making it harder for people to come forward in a similar situation but whatever. It's football, I love it, but it does not matter more than our children.

    Happy Trolling.

  • I called into a radio station that was in favor of the death penalty and asked them generally the same thing... if it happened at your station, and some big shot at your studio was using that status to bring kids on tours and pull what Sandusky did in that environment.... do you burn your station, your radio show, your job, your livelihood to the ground because a producer, some guy at the sound board, and the janitor knew about it and covered it up?

    Just like the guy said about "one-up-manship".... I'm more against child abuse than you are BS.... PUNISH EVERYONE!.... CRUCIFY THEM!.... Punish who?.... everyone who had nothing to do with this....

  • While you're playing the what if game.... Do you think Joe Paterno would have used all the power he had to stop this if it was say one of his grandkids? Would he have seen a problem with this if it was his family and not just some random kids from lower income homes? Just curious while you're all playing what ifs.

    I like this game. Should his grandkids been victimized they probably would have been too scared to come out as other victims were intimidated by the control Sandusky had over his victims. Sandusky was Joes assistant for over 30 years and along with others close to hom approved him to adopt 6 (I think) children. So having all of his close associates fooled Joe would have still found it hard to act on accusations on a man he thought he knew so well. Since were playing what ifs.

    I must have missed where anyone said that Joe shouldn't have done more.

    What if so many people weren't useless? There's a question to ponder.

    Ill ask you the same queations i ask all the unintelligent people who use this argument.... Would you let your kids go on a playdate/sleepover with a 50-60 year old man? Some, but not all, of these victims' parents' or parent is just as much to blame as anyone else.

    I don't know but I am guessing these trips weren't pitched as a play date/sleepover. He was using the prestige of Penn State football to attract these kids to the program. The backstage/behind the scenes access that any young fan would love for. Using access to the program and players (i.e. Lavar Arrington) is how he got access to these victims, not a "play date." He used the Penn State football program to lure the kids from The Second Mile to place where they were most vulnerable. But that is very classy of you to place as much blame on the parents as you do Joe Paterno.

  • I'm not nearly as intelligent as most posters. I've read on here the amount of damage the death penalty for PSU would do the local economy, other sports, etc. First, let me say that I'm not in favor of the dealth penalty in this case. However, did not the arguements that are being made about the harm the DP would do exist back in the 80's when SMU was placed on the DP? Why is it different now? Is it because of the enormous financial benefits tied to college football and if so, isn't that just a sad commentary on our society. If the DP is going to be so harmful to the university that is being placed on the DP then why is it even an option? Shouldn't the NCAA just get rid of that penalty? One other thing, if you believe that some form of sanctions or penalties are in order for PSU, what should they be. I understand the arguement that this is not a football related issue, however, that ship has sailed as far as public opinion on this horrible crime. PSU will most likely get some form of penalties, what should they be?

    You should have stopped after your first sentence. I'll keep my tag because it's my opinion. Just my thinking.
