I don't usually make this post, but my thoughts on the game...

  • [this will be a repeat post for those that visit the BWI free board]

    1. Is anyone else still defending Nick Sukay? The guy defines the phrase "late to the play" -- Just like last year. Where is Willis???????

    2. Gerald Hodges is clearly a freak of an athlete (size/speed), but the dude needs to learn how to tackle. Just hitting the ball carrier with his shoulder is not enough (especially against teams not in D1-AA like Indiana State). So many times he was in position to make a great stop/play, but failed.

3a. Not quite ready to call it an "MRob Moment," but what I saw out of Bolden on that final drive was very MRob-esque in that he was determined to will the offense into the end zone one way or another. The execution was far from pretty, but the determination was beautiful. It really seemed like a completely different Rob Bolden than what we have ever seen before. Hopefully it was a turning point for the young man, and we see more of it -- Though hopefully it gets more "smooth," he learns how to avoid direct hits, and he doesn't get killed.

3b. The QB competition is officially over, and Rob will be getting all practice snaps with the ones from here on out.

    4. There is an on-field talent gap between PSU and Bama, but it's not as wide as some would like to believe. Where the REAL talent gap exists is on the sideline and in the coaches box.

    5. If Bolden really does use that last drive as a springboard, and grows at half the rate of growth I saw between ISU and Bama, we can be as good as anyone in the B1G -- Which may not be saying much though, based on what I saw Saturday. But still, it should be the goal at this point -- And I think it's attainable.

    6. IMO, the biggest difference I saw on the field between Bama and PSU is how they reacted to things not going their way. Our players got demoralized when the failed fake punt actually became "successful" due to the bad spot of the SEC officials (that we couldn't review because our coaches burned three timeouts in the first drive), and completely demoralized after Szerb's fumble. It was like our team had it drilled into their minds that the only way to beat a team like Alabama was to be careful, and play a perfect game -- And anything less than that meant no chance. Because of this, our team plays "tight," and becomes so demoralized by a mistake, it's difficult if not impossible to recover when playing a team like Bama. This (careful, timid, scared of anything less than perfect) is the tone of an old person (i.e. someone who is 85 years old). I'm afraid I'm going to get hammered for this one -- especially by the old-timers -- so please know, I'm generalizing here (and I think it applies to our coach). I'm not saying EVERY old person is scared of the world around them -- But it's easy to see that it is a general truth.

In a nutshell, I feel bad for our kids because as a team they have the potential to be so much better. With a head coach that could realize their potential, they HAD the potential to win every game this season, IMO. But at the same time, they need to at least do their part. If they would have done their part, they could have had themselves in position to win that game in spite of the coaches.

PS. We will kill Temple. Bet the house that we cover, and take the over.

  • Agree with most of it. Bama was better on the sidelines and at the skill spots IMO. There DB's owned PSU's WR's...absolutely owned them. Moye must have felt like he was in prison on Saturday. The fake punt and fumble hurt, but the better team won IMO. I just think the score is a bit off, but when you consider the turnover ratio...it wasn't that bad. I had 27-13 going into the game, although I though PSU would keep it closer in the first half (they should have really). I wasn't shocked by this and was encouraged a ittle bit by it. I agree Rob looked like he finally wanted to compete and try to win a game. If anything that was the highlight for me. He made some dumb throws, but now just keep him on the field and he will only get better IMO.

    Good stuff cool.

  • Agreed with pretty much every point. A couple comments:

    1. As far as I saw, Sukay was only challenged once or twice. Very frustrating to see Alabama's receivers do what ours should have been doing - catching contested balls with great hands.

3a. Bolden's stat line wasn't great, but anyone who watched the game saw what he was able to do on 3rd downs (mostly 3rd and longs), and saw the offense moving consistently with him in. Stat line does not tell the story.

3b. Not familiar with your posting history, Boulder, but the confidence in that statement makes it sound like inside info. If it's simply a conclusion based on the game, I'd agree except I still don't trust our coaching staff.

    4. Completely agree. We were actually pretty competitive in this game. Our defense did a good job until the 4th quarter, when the team gave up (except Bolden). Coaching was the biggest gap out there between the two teams.

    5. Agreed.

    6. Just out of curiosity - when did something not go Alabama's way (for you to see them react)? Maybe the 3 and outs at the beginning of the halves? Just wondering.

  • Agree with 90% of this, but disagree with your criticism of Sukay. If I'm thinking of the same play you are - the 3rd down play - he was GREAT in that coverage, but you need to give a heck of a lot of credit to McCarron and the receiver. Big Time throw, from a Big Time talent. Same is true with the TD on that same drive. We had perfect coverage and he slipped it through a tiny crack.

But again, for the most I agree. I think we're bringing in a lot of talent, but we're obviously not developing these kids/instilling confidence in them like Bama does.

  • Agree about Sukay appoo. He played a decent game and was 1/2 a step late for a pick. He was right there though. The DB that caught my eye was Lynn looking like he was in mud against the drag route over the middle of the field. I thought it was Hodges at first thinking LB versus WR..but it was Lynn.

Definitely agree with this, Boulder. I hope that from this point on Rob is our starting QB and we see that type of play from him for the duration of his career here. On that TD drive, RB showed a lot of grit, moxie, and determination. The staff needs to realize that running an offense like what we saw on that drive is most effective for this offense and will allow us to reach our full potential on the offensive side of the ball. It seems like something finally clicked for Rob on that drive and he was making things happen with his legs and arm. I know how Joe works though and I'm sure he will tell Rob not to run as much (which IMO is part of the problem) but hopefully after seeing him be so successful running the football vs. that Bama defense, that will open up some new offensive schemes.

Call me crazy but since when does a CB that is in a cover 3 follow the drag route over the middle? I thought that it is the LB or safety's job to drop back and pick that up. I honestly don't recall seeing us play much man to man, if any at all.

Those crossing patterns are tough to defend against. Especially when you're a PSU DB, who's more used to defending the vertical than the horizontal. But for the most part the boys on D held up well.

  • On Sukay's "almost pick" I was yelling "knock it down!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"
    Don't we teach that??????????????
If he would have chopped at the ball and the WR's hand it would have been a incomplete pass.
You can extend further with one arm than two!!

Agree about the coaching. Across the board the Bama just appeared to have far more "football knowledge."

  • On the fake punt, even though we were out of timeouts and couldn't throw the challenge flag, can't the replay judge still stop the play to review it? If the spot was as questionable as some people say it was, why didn't the replay judge review it himself?

On your point #5, we are going to be favored to win our next seven games. That doesn't guarantee we will go 7-0, but this team has an excellent opportunity to gain momentum and become a pretty good team by the time Nebraska comes to town on November 12.

Don't disagree and it may not have been his responsibility. He was either gassed or Maze is that fast...or both. The appearance was that it was a LB and then I saw it was Lynn and was caught off guard by it.

I know on one drag route, it was Lynn as we blitzed more than one LB, meaning he had to follow. If this is the one you are talking about.

I've never seen officials voluntarily review a spot on the field. Or more accurately, I can't recall a time when that's happened.

In these situation those spots can be very tough to handle. You have a whole bunch off fat and muscle on the middle of that scrum, I'd imagine it's tough to find the football.

Guys, regarding the last drive, it should be pointed out that Bama had completely backed off and was in full prevent mode. Or, as we call it in PSU... our regular defensive set. pirate

Now, I will say, it's not so much what he accomplished on the drive, but how he looked doing it. There is where I will agree. He looked decisive and in charge, especially on the plays he took off running with it. We haven't seen that out of him yet. I hope it's the beginning of something. I just wouldn't put too much stock into how well they operated on the drive.

  • Bama's hits on Rob in the last drive certainly didn't give the appearance of backing off. Bama's fans were also livid that they allowed a TD. That defense EXPECTS to not allow a TD. They were not backing off.

Disagree with that. I think there is a wide talent gap. It's noticeable in the second team. There is little difference in talent between Bama's first and second team. There is a pretty significant difference in many areas between PSU's first and second team.

Over-signing helps a great deal with that. They usually turnover a large % of their roster every year, and lot of that has to do with improving depth. We have to live with every kid we accept into our school for at least 4 years, regardless of how he turns out.

It happened late in the Utah-USC game Saturday. An official review and they correctly overturned the call on the field.

That defense hadn't given up a TD yet this year and they (along with Saban) wanted to keep it that way. No doubt.

I stand corrected, still believe that's mostly on the coaches for wasting all the TOs. Bradley himself said he would have challenged it if he had any TOs.

I would love to be a fly on the wall in this week's coaching meetings, because I think Scrap must be furious.

I was wondering why they didn't review the fake punt spot as well, but I believe it was because there wasn't a great camera angle. With all the other plays that were reviewed (e.g. Szczerba's fumble), at least one of the camera angles showed what happened clearly. None of the camera angles were definitive with the spot. I'm guessing the booth only calls down to stop the play and review it when they see something that indicates it might be overturned.

What part isn't true? I was joking about PSU's defense. I assume you're referring to Bama not being in a prevent? Go back and watch the film. The DBs are playing way off the receivers on the last drive. I should avoid the term "prevent" because I think it gets mis-used. But, they were absolutely giving PSU the underneath stuff.
