I applaud the efforts of BOB and the new staff...

  • Considering the circumstances in which they took over the program... They had very little time to build up relationships with most of the recruits committed or non committed... BOB is hardly on campus because he still has his obligations with the Patriots... Oh and not to mention taking over a program in the wake one of the biggest scandals to ever rock college athletics and the untimely passing of Joe Pa... So let's give the new coaching staff a little credit for salvaging some of the class and adding more to it... And at least trying to go after big time recruits who were already committed else where... I think they did an excellent job considering the circumstances and I expect big things from them in 2013... We are... Penn State!!

  • I'm with u on this. I expect 2013 to be a little different since our staff will have alot longer to recruit. Give them the whole year, not just a month.

  • Agree. They were handed a bit of a turd to mold weren't they?

  • From the things I see them doing and how recruiting has recently changed in the Big Ten, i expect an incredible job in the future. I don't necessarily belive they will all be 5 stars but rather talent just like we have always done before. It especially good to hear they want to lock up our PA recruits. Yay!!!

  • Coach O could have pulled a Cristobal (with Rutgers) and said "thanks, but no thanks to PSU". He willingly stepped into a crap storm. He is up against one of the best recruiters in the business with (I'm guessing) half the budget. I believe he is a warrior ready to do battle and serve PSU proud. I have nothing but respect for him.

  • I don't expect the PA recruiting to be great for the 13' class at the start, but with aggressive recruiters hopefully we can land a couple high profile early recruits. BOB is an unknown commodity as a head coach at this point. If his product translates well on the field once the 12' season gets underway, this would really help for the 2nd half of the 13' recruiting season.

Good post. Other than Reeves and C. Williams, who frankly never gave BOB a fair shot to make an impression, we retained each and every verbal commitment that was part of this class when BOB was named head coach on Jan. 6 . That's no small feat given the cards this staff were dealt, as you've mentioned.

Wilkerson could've gone to Nebraska, Wartman and Lewis were seriously looking at Rutgers and Pitt, Jamil Pollard was looking around, and Malik Golden was all but gone to Iowa. In addition to that, we landed A. Lynch over BC and arguably OU, and we took D. Davis and T. Williams from WVU. The new staff is doing fine for now.

  • I hate the Patriots, but will be rooting my ass off for them this weekend!!! I'd love to see O'Brien's pitch next year, when he throws his Super Bowl ring to a 5 star recruit to wear, and tells them he can get them ready to chase their dream. I will have to drink a lot of Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA to stomach the game, but I think I can do it.

  • I agree to an extent.....I applaud the effort as well......he has reached out to big name recruits, looked at next years big names, expanded our recruiting map, and tried to hang onto committed recruits. The results, however, leave something to be desired. I just wish there had been one recruiting coup to celebrate, or hanging onto some core members of our class, signing a big name on the radar, swaying a big name recruit from another school, ect......unfortuntely, there have been lots of seeds laid so far that have beared little fruit

Have to agree with PSU James on this one.

    Spulv400

  • But you can't really expect that, he had less than a month and had a hudge scandle to overcome

  • They did well under the circ.
Old staff was focused on keeping the commits. Not getting new ones. SO THAT hurt us.
Old staff didnt do good job of that (only 4-5 guys were actually doing anything).
Old staff didnt blow smoke up the kids' a... They told them the truth - look around & THEY DID

Cant place the blame on BoB & New staff.
They got several kids & got a QB that was better than Skyler.
You never know what you get & I dont mind giving a legacy kid a scholar like Warner.
Remember, Jordan Hill was 2* & few other starters
This group of coaches will coach hem up. Give them a chance.

Just wanted to say I totally agree with the original post from Mike and James as well I fully expect and think we will have a great class for 13'. However I don't expect to be top 5 or top 10 I think that would be setting the bar to high for the new staff. Our neighbors in tO$U and RU have great recruiters that will have our staff battling up until next years signing day and we are just starting to get our foot in the door down south and schools our previous staff either hadn't explored or burnt that bridge. The process of getting ins with these new areas may take a year but that's something that really excites me. Looking at our class this year barring any signing day surprises we should end up around 35th in the nation and that's with a tremendous job by the new staff keeping the recruits that gave them a chance. Realistically, I would like to have a better avg. per recruit over 3 (2.9) this year but I feel this staff can put a class that can rank in the top 20. I know they will put their time in so in years to come we can get the 5 star studs we never could before and have a top 5 or 10 ranked class. Next season BOB will have his guys hitting the trail hard cannot wait!

Agreed and I think BOB is going to be able to recruit FOR his system, which won't require simply going after 5 star recruits. He'll go after guys that fit the system best. So he may not need a 5 star burner WR at a certain spot, so he can take that guy who is not as quick, but has good hands to fill that certain role.

I expect big things, I really do. If for nothing else, it will get kids interested in a tougher offense, an offense which requires effort and results.

I mean Meyer won't have this selling point next year........."What type of offense will we run and where will you fit in? Let me ask you...did you watch last years super bowl? Remember Gronkowski?? That's where you will fit in."

I don't fully understand this ideology.

If PSU pulls in the 40th best recruiting class in the country next year are you really going to be pist that you expected them to do so much more... or are you just going to be disappointed because it's the 40th best class and Michigan and OSU are both pulling in top 10 classes again.

We have a new staff, new philosophies, new S&C program, new recruiting tactics and energy. These are all reasons to be excited about the upcoming year and 2013 recruiting.

Don't hinder yourself as a fan... so that "it doesn't hurt so bad when it doesn't work out." That sounds like a female talking to her therapist after she just got dumped.
