I am starting to see the most loyal, hardcore fans are walking

  • I am talking about fans who live all over the country, who spend over a thousand a year in travel alone, who donate tons of money, long time season ticket holders...the ones who bleed blue & white and then prove it with their pockets, the ones who are unerringly positive about the program in good times and bad times, the ones you'd ALWAYS expect to stick with it...these fans are now publicly saying that they will be out if the current coaches rumored are going to be hired. I consider myself such a fan. Many here know how in the tank I am for PSU...so when someone like ME says "I'm probably out"...

This is a crisis. Plain and simple. The the core of the fanbase, the most important fans, are threatening to walk. This is the end of Penn State as we know it.

But we can stop this. Spread the word. Spread the message I've related above. PSU knows how much money the football program is worth. They know how much good we do the community and the country through our program. They know how important football is to Penn State academics.

DO NOT LET THIS ADMINISTRATION DESTROY OUR UNIVERSITY.

Black Shoes. Basic Blues. No Name. All Game.

  • They're walking and I'm not at all sure O'Brien is the next coach.

So take a xanax. Have a glass of wine. Let's see who the next coach is.

THEN if it's bad, we can walk.

    bonovoxpsu

  • By then it is too late. We need to make noise now or Beaver Stadium will look like the BJC tonight!

We're talking about the hypothetical situation where PSU hires a coach of the caliber of Bill O'Brien

Exactly. We've been holding back until now. That can't happen any more.

Ummm thats impossible. Our football coach is not our university as a whole. Football is a sport that we love, but its not life.

    - meeting people at Penn State that I will be life long friends with...thats life
    - Dr. Craig Meyers in the college of medicine that may have cured cancer....thats life
    - the Smeal College of Business being ranked #1 in Businessweek for the most recruited undergraduate business school in the country that gave me an opportunity at a Big 4 accounting firm out of college...thats life
    - learning life lessons and having long lasting memories that have shaped me as a person from my time at Penn State...thats life

I will support our next coach, whomever it is. I sure don't want O'Brien, but I will not stop supporting the university that I love if he is the coach.

I don't want to see more freaks burn their diplomas in front of Old Main again...

    LambeauLeap

  • Destroy the University? Jesus. I think Sandusky tried his best to do that. These guys are not idiots and hey love Penn State. I'm sure they're doing the best they can for this school.

    yalikeMoxie

  • Even if they hire him...give the guy a chance!

    Skinsfan21

  • Oh, I will not walk and I plan on donating more next year (not that I'm some large donar).

Do you realize how much money our academics gain because of football? Including Smeal, which I graduated from? There's simply no way my diploma is worth what it is without the football program Joe built.

My friends will be my friends forever. But if the Admin sets out to de-emphasize football by intentionally making a low level hire, then they are absolutely threatening the financial well being of the entire University, and with that the academic well being of the University.

EXACTLY! So why on Earth what any reasonable individual think that they would de-emphasize football? They would PURPOSELY be discouraging donations and downgrading our university as a whole. PSU continues to rise year to year in every major university ranking. You think Dave and Ira all of a sudden hate PSU and want to see it become comparable to Mississippi State in terms of academics?

I'm also interested to hear your thoughts on Building 7....

no, but Erickson has publicly said he wants to scale back the football program. Dave and Ira work for him at this point.

Here is what people do not get....

Students come to PSU for football and to party... with the amount of kids... we charge a ton and can have some dang good professors to teach them...

If football goes bye bye then less students enroll less money to pay for everything and the good teachers leave which causes the jobs to leave and we become Lock Haven.

Football weekends are so much business if that just vanishes everything is hurt...

Like it or not but the football program is a major player in our academics

The guy has never been a head coach before right? But yet he gets complete blame for the record of every team he has been on? I don't get it. Or how he sucks so bad that NFL teams are looking at him for a HC job.

The NFL has been plucking coaches from the Bill Belichek tree for years. How successful have they been at any level? Why should I think O'Brien will be different.

No. How much? Tuition has nothing to do with football. State funding has nothing to do with football. Research funding has nothing to do with football. I believe those are the three largest sources of revenue for the university. Any profits from the athletic department, which would be peanuts in comparison to the budget of the university just go back into the athletic department. Unless I'm missing something, I don't realize how much money our academics gain because of football.

Some here have attributed joining the Big 10, which IS likely due to the football team's success, and it's association with the CIC as a source of increased funding that we would not otherwise have had access to. However, IIRC, someone posted data in the last few days that Penn State's increase in research funding over the last few decades mirrored that of the entire country and that the CIC did not provide any statistically significant increase. So, I call B.S.

I can't even believe I'm responding to this post. Its really depressing that I seem to be arguing with PSU fans (and/or alumni) of how great our university is. I'm going to assume you didn't attend PSU. To say one bad head coaching hire turns PSU into Lock Haven is beyond absurd.
