  • I like the pic :) PSU hasn't played Pitt in years and I still despise them. The instate rivalry never died with me regardless of them not being on the schedule.

  • Growing up near Pittsburgh I was surrounded by their fans my whole life. I find it's more the older generation that dislikes PSU because the 2 teams just haven't played in such a long time. The current Pitt students channel most of their hatred towards WVU and don't really care about PSU too much.

They're a basketball school to my generation. There might be a few diehards whose parents went to Pitt during its hey-day that still love Pitt football, but the majority of the students leave after Sweet Caroline and completely blow off the cold weather games.

I expect all of this to change however as WVU is no longer a meaningful rival of theirs & the Pitt vs. PSU rivalry is starting back up in a few years. Should be interesting to see how many PSU fans show up to Heinz field.

PSU fans will probably outnumber the Pitt fans in Heinz field. It is really sad how few people they get to turn out for games. Then to add insult to injury they talk up the powerhouse football team they don't support, lol.

Wouldn't really surprise me... there are actually more Penn State alumni in Allegheny County than Pitt Alumni. And tickets are cheap & plentiful so it's a good possibility.

In a few years, our school will see Heinz Field filled with proud Nittany Lions, and we'll never agree to an even home and home ever again. It's completely pointless.

I feel what actually happens on the field will determine whether the series continues. If the rivalry is truly re-ignited, the series will be renewed.

I think so too, except it'll be 2 at Beaver Stadium, and 1 at Beaver Stadium West for every three games.

Agree. I turn 38 on Sunday and what little dislike I have for Pitt has only come since joining recruiting site message boards. Prior to that (2005), I never had a negative thought towards Pitt. Never even realize there was once a "rivalry." As an in-state school, I actually rooted for them to do well.

Obviously, now that I've joined these sites, I've learned a little bit more about the long-ago history, and understand that some older folks remember a "rivalry" at some point, but for a lot of us -- and especially the kids of today -- we really don't really care one way or another all that much about the other.

Incorrect. In fact not even close to correct. Should we be both post links?

So if you didn't know it was a rivalry during your 38 years where were you the week leading up to the game? Did you not receive newspapers? No sports radio? I'm confused.

Anyone else want to claim this before I start posting census data that proves Pitt has 3 to 4 x's as many alums in Allegheny County as Penn State?

Your fan base is huge and brings you a lot of money, but all the branch campus transfers, online students, and t-shirt fans really waters down the integrity and reputation of the real Penn State-Main Campus alums who earned their way into the university on merit.

Maybe the census data is derived off of attendance at games?

Penn State 7x National Champs, home of the winningest college football coach to ever grace a sideline.

Inferiority complex much? Who the hell cares how many alums are in Allegheny county.

BTW, we'd get banned on your board for such a post. Now run along and go back there and worship that loser goadie like the other 4 guys do. If he really is a former player then he is an embarrassment to an already embarrassing program.

You are correct that our fan base is huge with many alumni and folks who are just fans. Certainly that fills up a stadium. However, what I don't understand is the absolutely pathetic attendance numbers for Pitt. The stadium that your team uses is smaller hence should be easier to fill up. The school is in a metropolis unlike our stadium. It is sad how poorly Pitt fans support the team. Certainly the brand has suffered recently from a win/loss perspective and the inexplicable coaching carousel, but even in the down years one would think the fans would support the team. It is really sad to flip through the channels to find a game and see that many empty yellow seats when Pitt plays at home.

I highly doubt that goadie guy is a former player. It's just impossible. He literally posts like a 12 year old kid who thinks that If a recruit sees his posts calling everyone from Penn State a pedophile, that a recruit will agree, drop us, and go to Pitt.
It is he only way I can come up with an explanation of his posts. Either that, or it's a WVU fan in disguise who was planted on ther board to make Pitt fans look ridiculous.
