Make this more interesting. If you could go back and pick from any players that have left bama since 2009 draft as sort of an a 5yr bama all start team how do you think they do?
All ridiculously hypothetical of course, but look at other college teams over the same period, a few teams have a lot of great players but I don't think they could field a full team that could compete, but from the line out Bama would field what appears to be a pretty decent NFL caliber team over that time period IMO. Biggest issues would be at QB and WR with the obvious exception of Jones.
That any college team would be competitive in the NFL is just not realistic, but that fact that they could take a bama all start team of players from the last five years and build a decent NFL team out of it is still remarkable and shows where their program is at.
Had to do a little looking and not all that familiar with their rosters but:
QB - Mcelroy RB - Richardson, Ingram TE - Smelley WR - J. Jones, Cooper, Maze OT - A. Smith, Carpenter, Fluker. Kouandju OG - M. Johnson, Warmack C - Caldwell, Jones
DT - Dareus, Chapman, Williams DE - Cody, Deaderick LB - McLain, Hightower, Upshaw, Johnson CB - Kirkpatrick, Millner, K. Jackson, Arenas S - Barron, Lester, R. Johnson

I guess you would have to take them as they are now. Hard to project how the current ones are going to go. I would suggest that Julio Jones is going to be a top WR for a while and Warmack looks to be a can't miss type guy. Wasn't saying this team would play for the championship, truthfully still think they would have trouble making the playoffs, but think they would beat a few teams and possibly contend for the playoffs if players developed as expected.
Admittedly, its hard to win in todays NFL w/o a QB.

That team would be tough against the run but I'm not sure they'd have much of a pass rush, and I'm not sure how good that secondary is. As for the offense, they'd struggle, might run the ball well, but again it's tough to say how good the oline would really be. I think that team struggles to make the playoffs.

I would agree with that. Secondary would depend on Millner being as good as projected. There would be no real depth to speak of either which would obviously be an issue for a real team.
I was just impressed by the fact that they might be able to field a team that could win some games. Couldn't find another college team over the same period that would even be close.

What's the scenario, the college version of these Bama players or the current NFL ones? Frankly, I don't think Bama's players are that exceptional in the NFL. The only one that looks like he'll be perennial Pro Bowler is Richardson.
Edit, either way they lose. QB is very weak, TR is good, WR's aren't good outside of Jones. Plus, I see very little pass rush coming from that defense. Good NFL QB's would carve that up.

So I always thought this argument was bullshit and Bama would get crushed by every NFL team but I just looked up Detroit's 0-16 season and their roster is complete dogshit... Bama would give them a game. And they lost some games by less that a TD.

I also just looked at that roster and it is still made up of all NFL players. Old school NFL guys would just manhandle any of those bama lineman. Its just fact. And if you look at the scores of that 0-16 team, 3/4 of their games were still close with only a couple blowouts. Bama really wouldnt have a prayer imho.

I just assumed we were talking that time frame since the Bama roster was done from 09. Also, I think that roster, as impressive as it is all things considered, struggles to win a game simply because of depth/QB issues. We could debate the rest of the positions all day long, but you don't even have a remotely serviceable QB. Teams would just stuff the box and that would be that. And that defense certainly isn't going to dominate anyone.

I was thinking just from 09, all time there are several schools that could do it I'm sure.
I am not really much on evaluating QB's, but would McEllroy/Mcarron be that much worse that any of Freeman/Johnson, Quinn, Dalton, whoever Cleveland of Arizona put out there? I was disregarding the depth issues, just fielding a starting unit was the goal. And while the Defense is not dominant, I think it could compete against the Cleveland's of the league.
All in all it was more of a statement about how good the players they have been churning out over the last few seasons are and how to on how build a dominant college team. Skill guys are nice to have, but you win in the trenches. Everyone wants the recruits with all the flash but I would prefer to see the big guys be the priority. Over the time that Bama has dominated, most of their best players have been on the lines, LB and RB.
