How Long Until we are Back on Top?

  • "Stuck in the Stone Ages", "Not Changing With the Times", "Head Coach That Doesn't Recruit on the Road", "Sleeping Giant"................."Sex Scandal". These are just some of the phrases that have been associated with Penn State football over the last few years. There is no doubt that this once proud university has fallen on some hard times.

In any "Changing of the Guard", there will be some growing pains. Many schools go through these changes on a revolving basis. Fortunately for Penn State fans accross the country, this is the first time we have seen shake-up from top to bottom since before the Rip Engle era.

With any successful re-build, the current staff needs time to build its own program. Fortunately, Bill O'Brien has held on to many of the traditions that make Penn State so special(character, honor, academics, etc), but the changes we have seen so far are very different from that of the previous regime.

I want to take a look at my favorite NFL team, the Washington Redskins, to help draw a parallel to what I am seeing at Penn State.

For those who do not follow the NFL, the Washington Redskins have been in a decade plus long drought. The lack of a franchise quarterback can be partially to blame, but a change in ownership, multiple head coaches, and a plethora of offensive schemes is the main culprit. The Redskins are entering year 3 of the Mike Shanahan era. We have finally found a quarterback, have a system in place that works, and now have the players to run that system. We have a front office that are all on the same page, and a general manager who actually knows what he is doing, yet going into year three, the expectations are still tempered. In the NFL it is almost impossible to completely overhaul a team in two years. Old philosophies need to be broken down, and torn apart, and new ideals always take time to implement. In reality, 2013 may be the year the Redskins actually see vast improvement, and begin to realize their true potential under Mike and Kyle Shanahan.

The overhaul at Penn State was even more drastic than what happened in D.C. It was a much needed change, just as was such in our nations Capital, but the events that marred this university, coupled with the passing of a legend, will certainly forever change the landscape of the place I once called home.

O'Brien has set out to change the way football is played at Penn State. The changes started amongst members of the coaching staff, and reach well into the depths of the programs itself. One of the most noticable changes has come in the hiring of strength coach Craig Fitzgerald. Fitz immediately brought the strength program out of the stone ages, and has implemented his innovative approach to training, that has seen immediate results, and positive feedback from the players. Going forward, this will be a key cog in the re-building process.

Another area of immediate concern is the new offense that O'Brien plans to install at Penn State. This "game plan" attack will feature aspects of the west coast offense combined with spread formations designed to create mismatched for opposing defenses. The most interesting part for me is how O'Brien plans to use the tight end in his attack. The role of the tight end has become more prominent in the NFL today. We have seen the emmergence of a hybrid TE(the Y TE), who is faster than linebackers and safeties, and too physical for slot corners. O'Brien is a step ahead of many college programs with his philosophies on this new breed of offense, and it should pay great dividends in the future.

The final piece of the puzzle(and it is a big one), is recruiting. It takes time to get the athletes to run a new system. Little was expected in 2012, when O'Brien and staff had literally weeks to compile their class. They did not target the types of playes they wanted, instead having to settle on the pieces that were already in place from the efforts put forth by the previous staff. Still, Penn State managed to come away with a respectable class that contains some solid pieces to build around. The 2013 class is off to a great start, and we have already seen this new approach by O'Brien and his staff pay off. Not only have we landed some of the key players in our state, but we have infiltrated fruitful states, that were not currently in our recruting pipeline, and have already made serious headway in securing committments, or at least being in consideration for prospects from these regions. One of the most promising signs is our new found presence in New Jersey, which was once a goldmine for Penn State, but has since become tougher to recruit. Our success in New Jersey this year could become key to the 2013 class.

The signs are all pointing in the right direction, but the destination remains a ways away. I expect to see a competitive team on the field in 2012, but just how competitive will they be?

How long do you think it will take to turn this sleeping giant into a perennial contender?

  • To answer your last sentence, impossible to tell. Forget the whole JS thing, we have an unproven coach. No head coaching experience at all. Who knows how good or bad he will be. I would imagine he pretty much has a free pass this year unless we post less than 5 wins. If we have 5 wins or less there are going to be a lot of questions

  • Honestly, we may not win a title for another 20-30 years. In todays age, the superstar high school athletes have their mind on one thing, the money the NFL will bring. Right now, Penn State doesnt offer that dream as well as other schools do. Penn State isnt flashy like an Oregon. Penn State doesnt doesnt turn the other way when it comes to academics like the SEC or the ACC. Penn State isnt the school that kids grow up all over the country watching and idolizing their star players like a USC. Penn State cant lock up in state talent like a Texas can do. Penn State doesnt offer booster incentives like an OSU.

Fact is to win in todays game, you need star players, whether you like it or not. You need the kids that come in and dominate from day one. Not the kids that are good kids and can be developed. Penn State will always put good players on the field and good players will be competitive, but they dont win titles.

I am not advocating cheating, or lowering standards. I am all about the Penn State way, but until the Penn State way starts getting game changers to commit, we cannot win a title. And I still dont see kids being turned on to Penn State. Bill O'Brien is doing a nice job, but he still has work to do. Only time will tell.

  • all the fans who thought it was as easy as getting a new coach may learn what ND fans have been experiencing for the past 20 years.

Point is that like the OP, most responses here will have little basis in reality, and if someone can predict it with any accuracy they'd be better off spending their time predicting powerball numbers.

One service has Hack rated as the #1 QB in the country. Doesn't get any "bigger" than that regarding star power.

  • I would certainly think guys like AB, Hack, Douglas and Williams qualify as star players. Also, the offensive line in college football is sooooooo important(just look at Wisc., and Bama). If we can get some quality skill players, and solidify what could be some solid O-line prospects, we definitly have a bright future.

Couldn't disagree with you more. We've already landed a top QB in Hack. Look at stanford. No where close to the tradition psu has and they've put together top 10 teams the last couple of years. Look at psu over the past 10 years. We've had a couple really good top 10 teams and that was when we didn't have a head coach that recruited (although his name alone helped). It's very tough to win a title...you could have all the talent in the world but are too many factors in college football today (strength of schedule). Our talent over the past 10 years has been good enough for 8 wins a season. During that span we've never had a great QB (Robinson & Clark were good but not great). Grabbing a couple more good/elite players could have meant 8 win season goes to 11 wins. I think BOB can do this. Hopefully we can keep the same type of players on defense that we've always had, BOB's offense is the x-factor. I predict our offense will be flashy and unstoppable in 3 years. I count my lucky stars every day we kept Larry Johnson. We'll be competitive this year, next year by be tough, and by 2014 I dont think anyone will want to play psu.

I disagree with what you stated about the best recruits only thinking about the money and NFL. With all the talk about concussions and how the NFL now stands for Not For Long, kids are starting to realize getting a quality degree from a strong academic institution is very important.

Fact is, PSU has an NFL coach who was groomed by one of the best coaches in the history of the NFL game. The biggest difference between BB and BOB are pretty obvious, BOB is much more accessable and talks to the media without issue. The only issue I see right now with the program is depth, but based on what I've seen up to this point they way the staff is recruiting, PSU will have solid depth in 2 to 3 years.

You have to take into consideration that PSU now has probably the top college strength and conditioning coach in the country along with top end position coaches. To me that is key in developing those 3 star kids into big time players.

If you look at how Saban built Alabama, he wasn't signing all 4 and 5 star kids. His first 2 classes were mainly 3 star kids and developed them.

I see PSU having success much sooner than most do based on our strength program and the position coaches we now have.

    Regards.

    put the pipe down.....

PSU got Derrick Williams and every program wanted him.... our weight program ruined him.... King and Wallace both needed to be on offense....

PSU can get game changers.... we just needed a coach who would go get them.

  • I believe we will have a somewhat up and down first year in 2012. In 13' and beyond we should see better execution and consistency. If you will remember, Saban went 7-6 his first year, then had much better teams after. Not saying we'll have Alabama's success, but there are parallels.

The biggest on-field challenge for BOB will be that in about a year, just as consistency and execution start to improve as the players learn the new schemes, we are going to start to pay the price for the recruiting classes of 2011 and 2012 that look relatively average on paper, at least relative to PSU/OSU/UM standards. We really need to be patient and give BOB all the time he needs to both install his system and to recruit and develop his players.

  • I refuse to go back to either of TOS's and 247sports only had class rankings from 2010. Among the Big 10 teams, our classes have been ranked #1, 5 and 5. We are on pace to be #3 (if not #2) this year. Talent has not been the rate-limiting factor and should not be going forward.

  • I would almost forget the Sandusky Scandal.. At this point, I don't think it will affect our play on the field anymore. I can't see the NCAA doing anything.. So now all eyes are on BOB and the new coaching staff.. Can they step up to the plate and bring Penn State to the level of Alabama, LSU, USC etc.? We'll see. If anything, it will be interesting.

  • I predict PSU wins 9 games this year. [9 wins was perfect for the 2011 team and I think it will be perfect for 2012 too. In 2011 we won squeakers against Temple, Indiana, Iowa, Purdue, Illinois and lost a squeaker to Nebrask.a Last year could have easily been a 5-7 year for PSU].

2013 will be difficult for PSU to win 9 games, although we should have a winning season. This is due to the aforementioned lackluster recruiting classes of 2011 and 2012, IMO.

    Cheers!
