Hoops question for current students (and locals)

  • Do you care? Do you ever want us to be good or are you just happy complaining about how we'll never be good or do you just like being able to complain at parties, to friends and online that we can be good but the university isn't committed to winning.

Looks like you are the ones not committed - that was downright embarrassing. National TV, Saturday night, chance to be a bracketbuster and we can't even fill half the stadium. Insert your own weather, I was busy, it was State Patty's day excuse up your you know what because I don't want to hear it, it doesn't belong anywhere near last night's game, looks like ~30,000 students and locals had good excuses.

Chambers may be the best chance we've ever had in our history of being relevant in basketball, but there's only one place to look this second at where we're failing and it's in the mirror.

    Show up or shut up.

  • AMEN! Tired of going to games and seeing blue everywhere... blue seats that is

  • I live in Pittsburgh so I obviously wasn't there, but I couldn't find the game on TV. What national network would I have found this game on?

  • I would love for us to be good, because competitive college basketball games are a blast.

Little unfair to just not allow people to come up with excuses, though. People weren't there because of a bad mixture of things, and the current team on the court is not at the level where students will drop everything to go to a game, at least not yet.

  • This post is funny.

I'm not a student and don't live in the area, but what do you expect. PSU has no basketball history, isn't a basketball school, it was a Saturday night and State Patty's day and the team is playing to stay out of last place in the conference. You expected people to show up? People don't watch bad teams with no history. Give me all you want about them being gritty and coach Chambers turning the corner. I would agree. Most kids, however, would prefer a night out that most had been prepping for months, and I can't blame them.

I cannot believe someone was surprised and, from the sound of it, offended by that. It's reality. Get over it and keep hoping the team keeps making strides. It has been fun to watch, but there's no reason to be upset with the students and locals. Be upset with a program that has went to a single Sweet Sixteen since 1955.

  • If Chambers starts winning people will show up. That's the way it is in all sports, all the time. Winning brings people, not the other way around. Thankfully we have an awesome coach who I believe will win.

  • I think there's a lot of truth to what edtee says. Our students do a great job supporting our football team - unless the weather is bad, or its a noon start, or its a game against a non-ranked opponent, or its a holiday weekend, or they're already drunk for a night game and can't get in. And then how many leave at half time - thousands upon thousands. In other words, they're the ultimate fair weather fans.

The students that care, get there early, cheer like crazy, make it hard for opposing teams to hear the signals, etc. do a great job. But as for their fair weather colleagues, I'm sorry if the game cuts into your busy party schedule.

Tens of thousands of people come from hundreds and sometimes thousands of miles and pay significant sums of money for the privilege of sitting in Beaver Stadium on a football Saturday. Thousands of our students couldn't be bothered.

Which leads to hoops - a good home crowd is worth 10 points easy in hoops. Students and locals can help make the BJC a really tough place to play. In fact, its a lot easier in hoops than in football to have a really positive effect. But our fair weather student and local fans demand a winner before they'll deign to come to a game.

The argument that we have no tradition is hollow. What tradition did Gonzaga have? How about UCONN until Calhoun showed up? How about VCU?

Right now we have one of the best point guards in the nation compiling amazing stats in games where he is almost always double teamed and we can't get students to show up. Well, it's your team and your fellow students.

  • im not defending the fair weather fans, but if Penn State basketball ever becomes relevant then you will see the fans show up. Football Did not need a 107000 seat stadium before they became relevant and now that the football team struggles they have a hard time filling the football stadium. I go to all the football games i can but i also am not narrow minded to think everyone will do the same.

Penn State football is my passion should i be mad at other people if they don't share my same views or passions?

You want people people to show up to root for a bad basketball team, when most times they are going to be disappointed. If Chambers gets this team turned around and they are actually playing for something the fans will show up. If they ever do it for extended period of time then you will develop a loyal fan base.

I guess this this can be compared to the question, WHAT COMES FIRST THE CHICKEN OR THE EGG?

edtee, im not saying i disagree I am just saying I understand why people don't show up for the games. Like it or not 50% or more of all fan bases are fair weather. Its the die hard fanatics (like most of us on this board) that keep supporting their teams through thick or thin.

    You just need to win..

The arena's were empty at UCONN and Gonzaga BEFORE they started to win... They did not fill the arena because UCONN was gritty before they became good.. Calhoun came and started to win games and then people started to come. UCONN proves it can be done in an area and at a school like PSU. So we can do it - we just need to win and I believe Chambers will win and when they do start winning games the students and fans will show up and eventually pack the place..

  • A friend of mine used to distinguish between fans and "goers of games". Fans are there rain or shine, fair or foul; goers of games show up for big games and winning teams. From what we're hearing in this post, most of our "fans" are really just "goers of games."

  • I took my 10yr old son to the game last nght. We had a great time together. Would have been better if Northwestern would not have made 15 3-pointers, but it was a great game and alot of fun. We got autographs fron Justin Brown, Jordan Hill, Garry Gilliam, and Gerald Hodges. I say support the kids/teams as much as you can.

  • looks like the locals have turned out in force for the Lady Lions game (on BTN right now). I am sure the pink zone promotion or whatever it is called has something to do with it. Probably the biggest crowd I have seen at the BJC this year.

What is up with all the sparkly stuff in the stands? I would think that would be really distracting.

    POV

  • Very impressive turnout at the ladies game. No tickets available in the lower bowl, the arena is probably 3/4 full. A buddy who works for the program told me 12k tickets were distributed prior to today. Those flashing things are flashing hats that they handed out to the first however many fans.

You do realize that you just described the student section at every single major school in the country, right? Most are half empty until midway through the first quarter for a noon kick.

  • Once Chambers starts winning more the stadium will fill up. Yesterday was also State Patty's Day, we could of been playing in the Final Four and most students would have been out partying. You can't expect most fans to be die hard fans and put the team before anything else, most fans are just casual fans who only really care when the team is really good.

  • Go check out the attendance during the year that we won the NIT. It was really good, especially once the new semester started. That is what you can expect with a winning team. I think Chambers will do a good job here and will get us winning, but let's be honest... this is a last place team with zero talent behind Frazier. The fact that we have 12 wins is an accompishment in and of itself. Just don't expect the casual fans to show up until you see the win total go up.

  • They have to build the program. Penn State has zero basketball history, but you've seen that when the team is good, like last season, people will show up.

This is about building the program.. "If you build it, they will come."

    No it wasn't.

    We averaged 8020 that season.
Our average last year when we went to the NCAAs was 7457
Our average attendance this year is 6770.

All of those numbers are embarrassingly bad. Plus the actual fannies in the seats count were considerably less than the attendance figures. Announced attendance is tickets sold and we always have had a considerable no show problem.

It was good after the semester started. Here were the numbers:

    MSU - 10.2k
Mich - 8.7k (Tuesday night game)
    Iowa - 12.2k
    Wisky - 14.6k
    Minny - 12.1k
    Indiana - 15k
    Illinois - 13k

Again, that was an NIT year. Like I said, if the team is good they will get the support. I remember those games, the actuals were close to the numbers shown here.

  • Start winning games and students will show up.

A lot of students/fans/alumni are still on the fence and wondering how real this is. DuhChellis was kept around far too long and the impression was if the University doesn't care then why should the fans
