Hockey Interview: Post your questions...

  • I'm interviewing Coach Gadowsky next week, post any questions you want asked below. The hockey team will be an independent NCAA Division I varsity club next season (2012-13), followed by joining the Big Ten Conference in 2013-14.

  • What is the time line for this team to be competing with the top levels of College Hockey?

  • Has the chance to be part of the beginning of a program from the ground floor sold more with recruits, or has it been the Pegula Ice Arena that has enthused them moreso?

  • What is his logic in terms of scholorship breakdown for the next couple of years. It seems like we are brining in a lot of recruits the next year or two and won't be left with many scholorships later. This could pose a problem as everyone graduates around the same period as well.

  • Penguins or Flyers?

  • Where are some of the traditions you would like to see the students develop and build in regards to the hockey program?

  • Given the prospects that are signed and ready to come in as well as the guys remaining from the club team who have eligibility remaining, how do you see the program transitioning to the Division I circuit?

  • Where do you scout in terms of leagues and geography and will that change in any way as the program becomes more established?

What is your impression of Penn State in general and as a potential hockey hotbed in your brief time here?

  • Can you tell us about the style of hockey you intend to play?

If you had to pick, would you prefer someone that is a good skater or more physical?

Which Big Ten or other big-time program will PSU most closely emulate?

  • Does the Penn State name bring recognition in Canada? What does the Penn State name mean to the Canadian kids you have recruited?

    POV

  • What is the scholarship breakdown.....how many total scholarships do they have to give. (total per year and max at a time) Do we get enough to give full rides or are they broken down into partials. The kids we are recruiting now...are we going head to head with the established D1 teams yet and what has the reception been like.

I can answer these. 18 total scholarships to be broken down at the coach's discretion, which won't be revealed to the media - they want to keep who is receiving what between Coach and the players.

There have been recruits who have spurned fellow Big Ten schools such as Ohio State and Wisconsin, others including Cornell and Boston University. One 2013 recruit was drafted into the OHL but chose Penn State instead. One 2014 recruit just participated in the USNTDP tryout camp last week and is awaiting the results. Every recruit I've talked to has been extremely positive and has signed on for a multitude of reasons - including Gadowsky's reputation as a great coach, a very good relationship with the PSU coaching staff, the Pegula Ice Arena, and starting a Division I program from the ground up.

  • I do not follow hockey that much - but is there a break down of the recruits anywhere?

Check out thankyouterry.blogspot.com. The guy who runs that is a very avid follower of our program, and college hockey in general. Lots of info to bring you up to speed.

    I've got two for you.

First there is the Google Map (similar to the football offers one) with all of the commits hometowns: http://tinyurl.com/PSUHockeyMap

Then there is an eligibility matrix to see how many guys are committed by year, and includes links to stories about each player: http://tinyurl.com/PSUHockeyMatrix

    Andrew Dzurita

  • PS these were some great questions guys, keep them coming if you have more. I'll be able to interview a couple of players who will be on the team next year (I don't know who yet) if you have questions for them again leave them here.

    Andrew Dzurita

  • What is your philosophy in regards to OOC scheduling? Travel out west or stick to Big Ten country and to the East?

    POV

  • Thanks for all the questions guys. Going to be speaking with Coach tomorrow morning, if you have any last minute questions post them here.

Also, 2015 forward Alec Marsh verbally committed to PSU the other day. Will have an update when I can get a hold of him, his club team was at nationals this past weekend.
