Highs and Lows - Iowa

There were plenty of highs for the Nittany Lions as Penn State went into Kinnick Stadium and emerged with a dominating 38-14 win over Iowa.

  • Sean, how can you not put Kyle Carter's reception on 4th down as the best catch? It was around the DB's head and then got YAC on top of it.

I feel like you always pick the other team for best catch. Come on, man.

  • MOST TELLING STATISTIC - 504-191

"Nothing technical about this analysis, Penn State put a pounding on the Hawkeyes on both sides of the football, putting up 504 yards of total offense while only allowing 191. The Hawkeyes were unable to get going on the ground, gaining just 21 yards on 23 carries."

This is amazing. I don't care how many players they were missing on offense this stat is just crazy. Escpecially since it was on the road at a very hostile environment! Just mind blowing.

  • Playing Iowa is always a game I look forward to. The team is nearly identical to Penn State in everything these teams do on the field. They play hard, hit hard and play a balanced attack on offense. The coaching is very good on both sides of the ball and for the most part--it is a chess game on the grid iron. Playing in Iowa is always exciting as the fans are educated and passionate ... and winning in Iowa City is VERY difficult for any team--especially the Nittany Lions. I was more concerned about this game going into the season than even playing Ohio State in State College (next week). With that said, last night's win was a huge step for the Nittany Lions in many levels! It was huge for confidence both offensively and defensively--AND for the coaching staff. I'm finally believing in Ted Roof. He's not pushing schemes for "his" defense that aren't overboard when it comes to elaborate and sometimes overboard on aggressiveness! The first two games of the season, Roof had way too much on the board for the defense, many times putting defenders well out of position--allowing the opposing offense to take full advantage for many times--big plays. What else does this mean for the Nittany Lions ... RECRUITING. Yes, the threat of not playing in bowl games for these next four years are a deterrent, but you can't help but think that some of the recruits who have ran for the hills--to other teams, may be thinking twice about their "de-commitment" ....... IF you're a quarterback, you HAVE to be thinking hard about playing for Bill O'Brien at Penn State. He has taken an average quarterback and offense and made him/offense not only better--but VERY GOOD--VERY FORMIDABLE! This team is definitely rising to each challenge and not only accomplishing their goals with simply winning, but they're doing it week by week with more and more confidence--and doing it with swagger and strength. Penn State is 5-2 and have a HUGE game with Ohio State next Saturday. This is a winnable game for the Nittany Lions, but let's not lose focus of the fact that this is Ohio State--forget the previous 7/8 games with both teams--records are meaningless for this game! WHITEOUT for what is expected to be one of the largest crowds to attend a game since the Penn State-Nebraska game of close to 111k back in 2002. Let's just hope that the turnout is the same as it was in 2002--a win--a big win! Here's to a good game and an injury-free game for both sides of the ball! WE ARE!

  • I give you credit for making the tough calls on the awards. How do you choose between Butterworth or Ficken for worst kick?

It was so dominating that special teams were irrelevant, but it is frustrating that it doesn't improve.

And Best Block goes to Angelo Mangino for drawing a pity holding penalty for a textbook pancake block.

Not sure what was worse, that holding call or the PI against Morris.

  • Nothing better than a B1G conference beatdown and that's exactly what this was!! On to OSU.

  • What was not to like? Enjoyed watching every minute of this game and plan on watching it again. Bogus PI call on a ball that sailed 10 yards past the end zone, but love the aggressive play on defense. Can't wait for next weekend to experience our first whiteout. So psyched that we are making it a four day weekend!

... not only sailed 10 yards past the end zone--but was 10 yards above the receiver. I have to say that the back judge that called Belton for the unsportsmanlike penalty had some issues with his pants being a little to tight when it came to calling the game--at least when it had to do with PSU. Belton did "ssshhh" the crowd, but good god--how is that worse than a sack and the defender jumps up and dances around and sprints to the other end of the field, saying, look at me!?! Oh well ... it's time for Buckeye preparation. Good luck Buckeyes--hoping for a good game and an injury-free one at that!

I agree, for the next several years, I don't care if the opposing team is down a few guys to injuries - if PSU can win with 65 scholarship players, squads at full strength can figure out their depth chart.

Most Iowa fans I encounter are good football fans. However, I did read on BHGP some chatter about tons of PSU holding that didn't get called. Wishful thinking from a euthenized fandom, or legitamit gripe?

Proudly delusional PSU fan for 40 years.
