Hey State fans.....from Bama

  • I haven't been by in a while, but wanted to stop in and share some of my thoughts.

First of all, I must agree with some of your fellow posters that go over to tBB that the main things that is important in this matter is that the academic prestige of Penn St remain where it is today. It is a phenomenal research University and hopefully that doesn't take a hit in this matter.

Second of all, my opinion is that although I hear the argument for the NCAA to step in and do something in this matter, I thing that is over stepping their boundaries tremendously and it is almost insulting to the situation that anyone would think that scholarships and bowl games is in anyway punishment for what happened behind the scenes. I know that some of the decision to cover up some information may have been done for the benefit of the football program, but that still didn't give any individual or the program itself a competitive advantage, IMO. I hope that doesn't happen as a fan of football and of Penn St.

I also don't think the well being of any athletic programs should be involved in this discussion as it is still the victims and finding justice for them and aiding in their rehabilitation that should be the top priority. Some of these guys had probably fully recovered from their situation, only to have the entire country take them back through the process over again, and there is no way seeing the guy responsible go to jail can be a quick fix for their situation.

As many of you know, I am a huge Penn St fan and will remain so. Joe Paterno was just part of that. My main reason for becomming a fan was the the people that I met and experienced during trips to State College in the 80's and your return trips as well during the Bama/PSU rivalry. The fans are still the same people. Honestly, I have decided what my opinion of the JoePa legacy will be. I am still in a little shock, as some of you, and can't even grasp what has taken place. I wish more than anythign that it wasn't true, but the more we hear, the more it seems there were people in the know that actively took part in keeping this a secret.

I came to this board many months ago and urged you guys to stay strong and my message is still the same. Stay strong for the University and for the football program. That proud program will still be there and I will still be a fan and supporting you from down here.

Good luck this fall and in the future!

Thanks, but this is not about representing my University of even Penn St, IMO.

It is about the great people that I have come to know over the years that are sickened every time you guys open a newspaper or turn on ESPN. You are the people that made Penn St what it is and what it will be and it is sad to me to see this happen. People that were in the know deserve what they got and are getting. It's the people that believed everything they were being told and of course the victims that I feel for. Pennsylvania is a great state and very diverse in the type of people that are spread from Philly to Pittsburgh. That collection of people have served to make a wonderful community there in the middle of the state and I hope that continues. I just get tired of the people that use this as a reason to bash people that had nothing to do with the situation, or worse, for their own football program's gain. This should and would be a huge story anywhere, but I feel like there is a large portion of people that only seem to really care because this happened at a prominent and big time B1G program and they are giddy about what this means for them and not what it should mean for those that truly love Penn St.

Sorry to rant, and time to get off my soapbox

  • Thanks for your thoughts, BetterOff. I think that most Penn Staters would agree that we want to see the guilty parties punished. I think the university will act on all the recommendations coming from the Freeh report and make the university even stronger than it is today.

Unfortunately, I don't think the net is wide enough. The focus is on Penn State, but what about our "wonderful" Governor (then AG) who began investigating, found evidence enough to pursue, but left Sandusky on the street for about 3 years. Had he arrested Sandusky...there would have been no Penn State involvement at all. Also, the 1998 incident did go to the authorities...what happened there? Had that investigation found any of this we wouldn't have all this mess now. Lastly, where is the outrage for Syracuse and the Citadel where there was child abuse? I don't see them being denigrated by the public. I think this may be one of the few fanbases in the country that can rise above this.

We will find a way to overcome the negativity, support victims of child abuse, correct any failures that have been found and move on. I just don't know how long that will take.

As much as I believe that Tom Corbett's hands are completely filthy in all of this, he wasn't the AG in 1998 or 2001. However, he was AG when the investigation started and it's inexplicable that he left Sandusky out on the streets, and we are supposed to believe that the sitting Governor who has a seat on the BOT never mentioned this investigation until the beginning of last year either? None of us here were born yesterday. He just wanted all of the money he got from the Second Mile (among others) for his political run for Gov. Good luck next time Mr. Corbett. There is no chance in...(clear throat) um heck... that you will have another term. It's also interesting that Tom Corbett took office in January of 2005 and then Ray Gricar went "missing" in April 2005. Please note that Gricar was prosecuting a case against persons from the mob at the time, as well as other high profile cases at the time. There is still a LOT of things that I question about Mr. Corbett, his background, and his involvement and quite possibly motives in all of this. And why is it that anytime there are questions asked about him on the steps of the Centre county courthouse, press conferences, etc. do news stations pan away, go to commercial, etc. Pressure to do so from the Governor's mansion?

  • Thanks for the kind words BetterOff. I find it incredulous that the media and other can condemn all the alumni, fans, and current students for the actions of a handful of men.....
