Here's what I see the rest of the way ...

  • for PSU's season. My belief is that PSU will struggle mightily versus Temple this Saturday, but will will win a close one. Bolden will come through and eventually become the full time starter the following week. As Rob progresses look out, when he starts getting more and more comfortable in the pocket and learns how to put some touch on his short passes and read defenses a little more, you'll start to see the offense score points in bunches. I'm not sure what his breakout game will be, but it will come sooner than later. I saw something in him I haven't seen since he's been the QB at PSU on that last drive where PSU eventually scored against BAMA. He showed poise, confidence, toughness, and leadership on that last drive. This might sound crazy to some, but you can tell he loves this team and wants to take ownership.

Watch out folks I think the lightbulb is starting to go off for Rob. I see a great season the rest of the way. Will PSU win out? Not sure, but things will get better and better for the offense as long as we don't have major injuries along the OLine.

  • I actually have a funny feeling the coaches will do everything possible to put MM in a good position to have success vs Temple, and he will...and that will keep this debate going for a few more weeks.

That's my worry, that he'll look "good" against another average - below average team, and that'll buy him more time. Just like Powell and his 1 kickoff return per year buys him more time. Joe won't care that he disappears against good teams, just that he does okay against the others.

  • What would make anyone think that this QB dance won't go on all season? I see no end in sight. The kid was 1-10 for zero yards and that wasn't enough to change Joe's perception of the situation. Thank god these are the only two kids that work hard and look good in practice, otherwise we'd be splitting time right down the middle at other positions on the field. fingergun

Did you hear what Blackledge said about the QB situation when he was playing at PSU? Paterno decided sooner than later on his situation which was approx. the 3rd or 4th game of the season where he became the full time starter.

Let's be fair, it's not "the coaches" it's just Joe. I may hate Jay but he wants Bolden to be the guy, not MM. This is all about Joe and nobody else when it comes to MM.

  • jay had MM's back in the interview after the bama game...personally i think that jay, or any other coach for that matter, will stand up to joe and tell him what needs to be done.

  • It's a shame because on that final drive I said, "Holy Crap M.Rob got some arm strength...." I saw M.Rob in that drive....the will to win.

I used to think that way.....but even if Jay "wants" Bolden, he's still just towing the party line for his dad and allowing it to continue. That makes him just as guilty as his dad. He has the power in the interviews to say "Ya know what, McGloin did not play well and Rob really stepped it up at the end. He's starting to see what he can do and how he can be a leader, which is what was missing"...... But he doesn't...he talks exactly like his dad with the same talking points.

So while I agree Jay wants Bolden.....he's still "harboring the terrorist" which makes him just as guilty as his dad in this whole thing.

    Of course he is.

Daddy got him the job at JMU and he wasn't retained. Daddy got him the job at UCONN same verse same as the first. Then daddy said he'd take his son to work and here we are.

I love how this is all unfolding...watching people realize how things really are. How Jay and Joe really aren't honorable. How the Grand Experiment is a facade in the final years because there is minimal success on the field and not that much honor in Nepotism.

Joe WAS great. Then Fran and Jerry were forced out....

Temple is not below average this year. I think our guys will find out some things about themselves this week. Our offense should be able to score a few points but Temple may score a few of their own. MM will see time and will probably pukeface it up for us once again. I think USMC may be right. Bolden looked as though he shook loose the 'JoePa shackles' on the last drive and decided to do his thing. I'm all for that.....

  • Good post USMC.

There were some good things that did come out of that game. The defense will be ok as that was probably the best ground game they may face outside of Wisky in terms of talent along the OL and in the backfield. Hell most other RB's on the schedule will not need 3-4 people to bring them down every single time. The DE's, the DE's who I have criticized for a year were disruptive and also batted down about 3-4 passes. In other words, this defense will give PSU a shot from here on out IMO.

The offense is what it is...No IDENTITY. They still don't know what they are or what they want. What weaknesses does PSU ever attack on a team and is it the exception or the rule? The WR's this week better feel like they just got out of Angola because they were someone's b**ch last week. Bama's DB's blanketed and pushed them around. I just hope they learned from it as not one other team we play has a secondary like that...NOT ONE. If the offense can learn to manage the ball and figure out a way to put up 21+ a week, this defense can carry them to some wins. If the offense coughs it up, every week will be a tough game which shouldn't be the case. I still think it's between 7-9 games, but an outside shot at 10 because the D is pretty good. Time will tell as the depth isn't that great, so PSU will need some breaks.

That's not really an apples to apples comparison. That battle was against Jeff Hostettler, a future NFL QB. MM is not a future NFL QB.

md154, it is almost scary your obsession with this situation. Are you friends with Rob, or for some reason hate McGloin. It is just kind of interesting how you will spend so much of your time defending a QB that has been mediocre at best. I agree that until we have more competition (i.e. Jones, Cabot, whoever), that Bolden should be the guy for this year. However, and I agree with Gemrich's analysis, Bolden has not played that well this year. He nearly gets himself killed when he runs, and his completion ration is not that much different than what he had in high school. He forces things, and has even missed on some fairly routine passes either long or short. Now, he has a ton of potential. Yes, game experience will help him, but please stop saying that he is such a new QB. Every game he plays he gets more experience, and he is no longer a true freshman. He has last season, bowl preparation, spring practice and now this season.

While I totally get that Jay may not be a good QB coach, there are several others on the staff (Buggs, McGloin, Galen Hall) that he can draw from for experience. Again, I am not saying by any means that Bolden should not be the guy. However, your continual shots at MM are not necessary, and I highly doubt that Bolden would have started as a true freshman if the staff (even Joe) had an agenda to try and make MM look good versus Bolden.

Quite honestly, unless the staff wants to give McGregor or Cabot, or Belton, or someone else some time, we all better hope that MM stays mentally and physically ready. Do I want him in there - NO. However, if Bolden takes another shot or two like he did to the head because he refuses to stop running so straight up and not going down or sliding (or heading for the sidelines), there is a good chance we will need to have some backup ready.

Agree. When you consider the sheer number of posts and time spent across multiple message boards, scary is right. Fatal attraction comes to mind.

I never really noticed your posts md154 until RB came on the scene so is it fair to suspect there is some connection?

Regardless, when I read Gemrich's UFR, I knew you would be the first response. His was a fair and unbiased representation which is what these boards need.

So what did I say that was innaccurate?

I have no obsession. Quite honestly, not many other topics on the team interest me at this point, so I really only focus on this one. I find it interesting because probably 90% of the PSU population feel one way, while the coaches, at least Joe, feel the other. So it's an interesting topic for me.

re: Bolden this year. Again...all goes back to expectations. I NEVER EVER said Bolden has been lights out or is perfect. It's obvious to all he has work to do. I simply point out that he makes no more mistakes than a guy who has been here twice as long. I expect him to still make those errors, but I don't expect the other guy to. Simple as that.
