Hearing that...

  • ... the recently switched Chaz Powell will get the start at corner this week opposite D'Anton Lynn. Stephon Morris obviously had a poor tacking performance against Minnesota last weekend, so he's not getting the start. Will check in to see what the nickel package will be this weekend.

  • Looking forward to seeing Chaz at corner. It's been such a back and forth year for him. Hopefully he finally settles into a position.

  • Good for Chaz. I'm glad the staff is making a switch here to see what Chaz can do. I think Morris should definitely be the NB.

  • More of the 'no tolerance' policy.

Ever since the pee-pee poor tackling against Bama u have certainly been all for it.

Miss a tackle....sit a series. Ask most of the team.

Have a crappy tackling game...you don't start the next game. Ask Morris for one.

I'm so sick of poor tackling I don't care who the player is...and Morris is a fav of mine.

    +1, Seltz

Morris hasn't raised up his game like I was expecting this year. The injury certainly didn't help, but other teams have certainly been picking on him as well. It's not good to be the DB they throw on.

What has Powell done in 3 years to earn seeing the field? Especially at defense?

  • Not a big fan of this. Morris has started all season and Powell has played what 3 weeks at CB this year?

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • I sensing great danger. I don't think this is the game for this move.

    jayer

  • It's not going to make much of a difference, because we'll be in Nickle 80% of the time, and I'm sure Steph will be a part of that package, with Willis and Drew at safety.

  • I have no problem with Powell playing, but how do you go from minimal experience to starting in one week. I rather see him split time with Morris first.

    PSUfan28

  • For the last few comments, something to think about.

Powell is starting, that doesnt mean he plays the most though. He may, but that will only be if he is very effective I am pretty sure.

To some of these kids, actually being the starter is a HUGE deal. Morris could play 95% of the defensive stats. But for a kid with his pride and determination, not being the starter is REAL punishment that probably hurts a bit.

Im not saying I know this is how things are or will be. Just something to ponder. I think Morris will still play plenty and Powell remaining on the field will depend on how he is performing.

Dont ask me bud.....No where in my post was there any "support" or "dislike" given towards Powell seeing the field.

    Im not at practice personally.

I am of the opinion for a little while now that Powell can be a fine player at multiple positions, but I am not sure he will be really good at any single one. That is what i have seen so far. He is an athlete to me right now.

I tell you what he has done, is played. Played in big time games in big time atmospheres. He wont be rattled by any of that. A home game. Tough year trying to get things going. White House or Ghost out whatever they are calling it. Make no mistake, while neither team is in real Serious upper level contention this year right now, this is going to be a charged atmosphere that will certainly be felt by all in the stadium.

If Morris is going to be "punished", for which I dont have a problem with (I dont think you commented on whether you do), then who else would you prefer to see out there at CB to start(KEY WORD-see my last response before this).

I just dont see it as a big deal. He has the athleticism. Our scheme isnt exactly the most complicated in the world. Let him have a crack at it. Maybe we will find out FOR SURE one way or the other if he has earned the right to see the field at that position.

So in summary, I dont have a great answer for you and I am admitting it lol. I already explained I am in no position to say as the only time I have seen him at CB was the Blue/White game and I know how you would feel if I were to use that as a basis(I agree with that lol). Honest as I can be here Bro. :-)

I wasn't really asking you per say.

I have NO problem with Morris being benched for poor play. I support it. However, you of all people know how I feel on this. I don't like that Joe will bench some players for poor play and not others. I hate the double standard or whatever you want to call it.

I'm not a fan of powell playing. he wasn't good enough to keep on offense, then wasn't good enough to keep on defense, now he is back on defense blah blah blah so we shall see. I'm not that high on Powell anymore.

Not sure on who will be at the nickel, but I wouldn't be shocked to see Penn State in its base D most of the time.

Yeah, I must admit, while I acknowledge the fact we need more quality on D and especially DB, Powell makes me a little nervous. His experience is lacking back there. I wish these coaches had just left him there early in the year instead of yo-yoing him around, it would make me feel better about this move.

  • I don't see how Powell can be worse than Morris...he has been pitiful. He has better speed than Morris, much bigger frame, if he can tackle...that is half the battle. It isn't like our coverage for CBs isn't something that takes weeks, or even years to understand.

More backers to try and contain Robinson? It's kinda scary to think of the likes of Gbadyu or Colasanti in space vs some of the guys Michigan have on offense.

Oh, the other thing to think about is that I'd imagine Powell is a surer tackler than Morris. Of course, that wouldn't take much. Hitting and Wrapping up is going to be a huge key against these guys.

Apparently it is, because our DB's can't cover, even the ones that have been playing for years.

I hope Chaz has a great game and proves to everyone that's where he's belonged for the past 3 years, at least then only the coaches will look like idiots!!

  • I like this idea. I think Powell has more speed and we may need this against Michigan. This may be what Morris needs. He may respond to the competition by increasing his game. I thought he woudl definately elevate his game this year. I think it will be a positive move all around.

  • Morris is still one of my favorite players on the team but he has gotten flat-out abused the last few weeks. Something needs to change in that secondary, and I don't mind them trying out something different.
