Have we seen the single best season ever for a PSU WR?

  • I would have to say so... AROB has been beast.

  • The best it yet to come.

Got to imagine Hack will turn someone into a AA.

Also if we get a solid Juco transfer with Arob the next two years are going to be special.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

ARob is already special. And if opponents double-team him, OB's system will tear them apart with the TEs. Let them choose their poison! Ha!

ARob stays healthy, he'll be breaking some B1G career records.

    Cheers!

    cheers

  • I was looking at the numbers a bit this morning to jog the memory.

Engram had 63 catches for 1,084 yards and 11 touchdowns in 1995. The score against Michigan State was one of the best clutch plays I've ever seen in any sport. I'd put that season up there against Robinson's, factoring in style of offense, quality of opposition, etc. But Robinson has one more game to change my mind.

loved me some Bobby E. He was a beast.... and this will sound weird but he had the college athlete look.... jersey kind of flew on him a bit... towel the long sleeves... I don't know just looks like legit CFB. The uniforms are too nice anymore..... we need some mud games

  • Robinson's stats are pretty good, but he kind of disappears in the big games. Don't get me wrong. He's good, but he's no Bobby Engram. That dude was clutch, and he did it in an offense that only threw the ball 20 times a game.

  • Jimmy Scott, #19 was my childhood WR hero for PSU. He had a total of 12 receptions in 1972...some WRs get that in 1 game today...HaHa!

But Jimmy Scott was efficient. Career 24 rec. for 715 yds and 29.8 avg. How many modern WRs can compare to that average?

1972 is a long bygone era of PSU FB and CFB for that matter, when Offense was all based on the running game. 1972 Heisman winner was John Cappeletti who had 4 games with 200+ yds and 4 TDs rushing in each game!

But in 1972 to this 9 year old, Jimmy Scott was a shining star on offense. 30 yds average per catch, you gotta be kidding me. He didn't get that many touches but he made the best of what he got!

Whatever happened to Jimmy Scott? shrug

  • Always hard to compare players from different teams and different eras, especially in a sport like football. I'll say that Robinson has made enormous strides over a short period of time and probably has more pure physical potential than any PSU receiver I've ever seen (pretty amazing how few elite athletes we've had at the position). Look at how much stronger, faster, quicker he's gotten just over the past couple years. It's entirely possible that he still has some physical maturing left to do (and I don't mean typical weight room growth). If he finds one more top end gear then he has a first round skill set.

  • The PSU offense is putting up great numbers, especially some good individual ones. Just some perspective on year end totals if PSU could play a bowl game....

    - Zack Zwiniak in games he's played a key role (Temple on) 821 yards in 8 games. 102 ypg. With 13 games could finish with Over 1,000 yards, while only actually playing significantly in 9 games. If Zwiniak would have started the season he could conservatively have 1,200 yds with a bowl game.
    - Matt McGloin has thrown for 3,071 in 11 games, 271 per game... with 13 at the average he has would finish with 3,629 far and away the best season yardage wise for a PSU qb. And would probably have more than 25 TD's and less than 10 Int's.
    - Allen Robinson has gone for 983 in 11 games 89 per game and projected through 13 would be about 1,157 yards.

All the numbers for MM and AR will go down as some of the best in PSU history, Just imagine if they could pad them with a bowl game like D Clark, Silas Redd, D Butler did.

  • Bobby Engram would have been unreal in this O. I have little doubt he would have put up better numbers than ARob.

Of course you shouldn't. But I wouldn't evaluate his high school film any differently. Regardless, he's developed into a true stud.

ARob could use another year of coaching. He's got the ability, but could use some more experience and Hixon's coaching.

  • Not to take away from ARob's great season, but I think OJ McDuffie In both 91 and 92, Bobby Engram in 94 and 95, and Bryant Johnson in 02 all had better seasons when you adjust for differences in schemes, better quality opponents, etc.

That's a good point. I expect next year Robinson should dominate even more if PSU can find a good QB.

One thing I'll say in the Robinson v. Engram debate: For every offense that has a dominating reciever, there are two or three other weapons in the passing game to keep the defense honest and free him up. Robinson has Carter, James, and Mosby-Felder. Engram had Freddie Scott and Kyle Brady. Engram definitely had the better teammates there, so in that sense, Engram probably faced softer defenses that had to focus more attention on the other guys. So mark that in the pro-Robinson column.
