Harris on the move

Upper Marlboro (Md.) Frederick Douglass wide receiver Paul Harris continues to pick up steam in his recruitment, as he has added three more offers to his total recently.

  • Not worth much effort here IMO.

  • Guess I'll be the odd one here. But this kid has the potential to be a high draft pick at WR if put in the right situation.
He's cocky? Good. I'm tired of our WRs playing timid. Let's see what happens as LJ progresses with him during his recruitment. But this is my pet WR for the class. I think this guy is a flat out STUD at WR.
In the right system he can grow into an NFL draft pick. And that system certainly isn't Gene Chizik's offense at Auburn...

He doesn't get up at any point in his film, at least that I recall.

Good athlete, takes a few hits to bring him down. I think he will be good, but not a stud by any means. JMO.

He doesn't need to get up on any of the plays though, he already beat the DB and is smooth in his body control going up for the ball.
I don't think he's gonna be a stud based on his film because of the highlight plays necessarily. But with a WR that big and tall ~6'3 and above, I want to see their hips and how they look coming out of breaks, etc. There are plenty of big and fast WRs who aren't very good simply because they are too stiff to run routes effectively. Harris doesn't look very stiff at all. Very fluid in his movements for a guy that tall and that is rare. Sets him apart from the typical "big, tall 'possession'" WR imo.

He looks like a good solid prospect. I love the size and frame. He looks the part of a big physical receiver but from the film I saw he didn't have the speed/explosiveness that I would want to consider a guy a future "stud".

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

True, but he won't be able to physically dominate the DBs in college like he did in his highlight films. Some of those times he was wide open was because he did a great job using his hands to get some separation from the DB, which is my favorite thing about him.

I think he'll be productive, but not a stud.

Also, how can you tell he has such great hips? His film was shot too close to the ground to catch most of his cuts in and out of routes, at least it was hard for me to tell.

    My thoughts exactly.

  • Obvious why USC likes him. He fits their type of WR to a "t"

Not gonna go through it all again, but two plays in particular, in which he shows his fluidity are very subtle.
The play starting at 0:35, a quick hook. He comes clean out of the break, but after the catch, his cuts are very smooth. A guy with his height, normally their jukes/jumpcuts will appear upright, exposing their chest because they don't have the hip flexibility to stay low when changing direction. In that play, his cuts are like that of a WR who is 6'.

Also, the play at 3:45. THe double move isn't anything jaw-dropping, and nobody would mistake that for a guy like Ryan Switzer running a double move. But when the ball is thrown deep, Harris still runs with his shoulders square towards the endzone. As opposed to most WRs who make the mistake of turning their shoulders to the ball too early, slowing down and allowing the DB to catch up and know that the ball is coming. Instead Harris still runs without turning his shoulder to the ball, and at the very last second is able to twist his body to catch the pass and shield it away from the defender. He wouldn't be able to adjust to the pass that quickly without good hips. It's subtle, but little things like that are what separate a 6'4 WR like Harris, from a guy like Christian Kuntz or your other average 6'4 WR. Not .1 seconds in a 40 yard dash.

Eh, good moves but not great moves, and you also don't get to see him plant on the button hook. Plus the DB just looked lost on that play.

I do think he is going to be a good receiver, very productive with the way he shields the ball from the defender, but I don't see him as STUD status.

Good point about running without turning the shoulders though.
