Hang in there, PSU...

  • Colorado fan here. We've been down this road, and it hasn't been easy; after a two decades of usually being top ten, we haven't been close since. Only now can we see the light at the end of the tunnel. But it doesn't have to be that way, not with a great coach, a super tradition, and a glued-together fan base. Check out what's happening at USC -- they walked away with sanctions, 15 scholarships a year, and still are bringing in the best recruiting class in the nation.

You have two ways to go. Collapse like SMU; or triumph the way the most solid programs have. You might be surprised, but a lot of people will be rooting for you. Hopefully you'll be staying together, too, and sticking behind your team and your tradition.

Wait, that means I agree with you? I was just being a smartass because I had no idea what point you were trying to make.

    Sorry for the confusion.

The point I was making is that the IRS, like most organizations, don't get involved unless the rules of the organization are broken (like you said - not paying taxes). Unlike the NCAA.

Just because something is egregious doesn't mean any and every penalty is deserved.

    Gotcha.

Well, in regards to Penn State, I'd say there was a slight institutional control issue, and I think that warranted the NCAA getting involved. Like others have said, it wasn't the crimes Sandusky committed that got the NCAA into this, it was the massive cover up that allowed for it to continue to happen. You obviously disagree, but I don't think the NCAA had much of a choice.

Cheat on Trojans! You got the right coach.

You come into this PSU site, hijack the thread entitled "hang in there PSU", spill your comments about SC and Bama fans, and now your ignorant ass is talking about CLK? If you wanna head over to the USC site so I can rip you a new asshole, then please do. This discussion belongs over there, not here.

Obviously I do disagree. If someone like yourself (who seems relatively reasonable) wants to have a discussion as to why, I'd welcome PM's. At this point I'm sick of talking about it on here. Bottom line, I don't think the Freeh report gives even close to enough evidence for any NCAA action.

  • I feel for PSU and their fans. Today must suck and I don't claim to know what the best way to handle this would have been. I do know that the example you have was entirely plausible and if a high level exec at my company covered up molestation the company probably would be disbanded and I would be out of a job. I would hate it and it wouldn't be fair but that is how it would go down. This isn't really comparable tho because the kids at PSU still have decent options. They can stay on schollie and get a degree from a top institution, or they can transfer and get a schollie at another institution. If my agency was shut down but I was given the chance to earn equal pay doing the same work somewhere else I would live with that under these circumstances. The kids will be ok. This punishment will hit fans the hardest and they will suffer the most. That is why the encouragement that fans have received to stay devoted to your university and help build something better is right on. The ncaa can kill the fb program but you are still Penn State! Don't let this demoralize you!

Should we start digging into every school? Maybe the rape history?

"The Coalition Against Sexual Violence condemns Lou Anna K. Simon and the MSU administration for failing to speak out against sexual violence in our community. Michigan State University is plagued with a culture of rape. MSU and its administration implicates itself in this violence when it refuses to take action.

Students, survivors, and allies concerned about sexual violence have gathered here today to call attention to the pervasive culture of sexual violence prevalent on MSU’s campus, and to enlighten university administrators, whose inactions indicate that they are either oblivious or indifferent. Many of us are aware of the issue of rape on this campus and campuses across the country. We know that one in four women in college will be sexually assaulted. We know that over 2/3rds of rape survivors do not report their attacks. We know that even among those who do, very few will ever see their rapist convicted or punished."

This "story" is totally false. The "rape" allegations were investigated by law authorities and found to be baseless. So, as an MSU fan, I find this offensive. Worry about your own problems and leave MSU out of this. Your time would be better spent holding a fund raiser for your football team.

    Maybe it is false.

But see how easily something gets out into the media and "appears" true, despite what actually may have happened?

The point was that crap happens at every school. Look in a cow's pasture and you're bound to find dung somewhere. Anyone who thinks that the culture of "sports above all" is solely at PSU is a dimwit.

I can do whatever the heck I want with my time. I only used MSU because it was an idiot MSU fan who came trolling to our boards.

This should be named the Official misery loves company thread. Alabama. USC. Not good company Psu fans. Do not take solice in hollow words. Psu is a great university start today being that again.

Just to give you an opinion coming from a slightly different perspective: I'm an AU graduate and fan. I think we obviously were treated well when the NCAA investigated so I am not an NCAA hater like some others. I also went to the CapOne game we played against y'all and we were treated terribly by some PSU fans (I know we all have them). I say this just to let you know I have every reason to be happy about what happened, but THIS IS OUTRAGEOUS and while the criminals certainly deserved their punishment for the unspeakable things that happened and were enabled, PSU football and it's fans DO NOT deserve this. I will be pulling for y'all to get through and hopefully the true fans will show up in the worst times just as they do in the best times. War Eagle and go Lions.

Go F yourself! I am a Bama fan and both my father and grandfather loved Penn State and what their school represented. Yea, JoPa did the wrong thing by not turning the guy in and once he pushed it under the table, there was no turning back. But to hammer the PSU fan base, as well as USC and Bama's for what a few individuals and coaching staff did is stupid. The schools and fan bases are much bigger than the few that cause so much harm. Get over yourself and what you think is BAD COMPANY. Take off the blinders and look at the whole picture. A few top guys screwed up big time, and so many are going to, and already have paid the price.

  • Auburn fan here. Feels like a lot of grandstanding and hypocrisy on the part of the new PSU administration and the NCAA (Emmert in particular). I hope the students, fans, athletes, and coaches still enjoy their time at PSU and Penn State comes out strong on the other side of this. Obviously as a human being, you have to feel for Sandusky's victims as well. But, it feels like this is college administrators doing what college administrators typically do: trying to make themselves look good and punishing innocent people in the process. I'm too cynical to buy everything that's in the Freeh report hook, line, and sinker. All seems too convenient. I wish Sandusky's victims peace in the years to come. I will also be pulling for Penn State in general to come through this and remain a strong university. This is not about athletics vs. academics or even vs. law and order, but that's the broad brush that the media is painting this situation with and the current PSU administration and Emmert are only interested in saving their own skin and / or making themselves look good.

The most tangible things here were children being raped by PSU football.

The student athletes have a chance to get a degree from PSU still or transfer out today and play and get a degree. Pretty harsh compared to being subjected to rape, right?

For Christ's sake, thank you captain obvious...do you think for one moment the PSU fans dont know this, or feel this???? They've been hit with a gut-wrenching blow, and they need time to digest it all without assholes like you coming here and turning the knife.

The actions of a few..I don't care how high up, does not reflect the whole. If you're too stupid to not know that, then you're just a worthless troll.

Penn State fans, this is what I didn't wish for you....no one came to console us, we received nothing but hate and untruths from all of CFB, including our own conference opponents.

Prove them wrong, and make them eat their words. You will find a way to stay strong and support your team of young players that choose you above all others.

Fight On! Remember, we share an old chant that defines us...and began for the same reason....We Are....SC! We Are...Penn State!

  • The juvenile trolling by that MSU fan certainly doesn't speak for our entire fan base, even though there certainly are some delusional loonies over there. I haven't even taken place in the discourse about this event on our board, because I can't stand some of the stuff being said. I certainly support Penn State through this as a Spartan/Big Ten alum, and it's not just because I love my fiance who went to PSU. It's a great school with a great campus filled with great people. None of that changes because of bad decisions by 5 people, or the constant overzealous coverage by a bloodthirsty media. I feel for PSU people. Like I've said in the past, I don't know what I'd do if Michigan State was in this position and I hope to never find out, either. I won't sit in an ivory tower and pretend bad things never happened at my school. Heck, in 1976, MSU had a 3 year bowl ban for improper benefits. Maybe it wasn't for as shocking or serious reasons, but it happened nonetheless and was still a painful period in the school's athletic history.

On these sanctions, I think they are completely BS as a largely impartial observer. None of the actions done from 1998-2011 by Penn State and Paterno were a direct attempt to gain a competitive advantage on the football field. If that had been the case, then punish them to the full extent of the law. Instead, you have a place like Ohio State embroiled in a scandal where there was an obvious attempt to gain a competitive advantage (which the student athletes, in many cases, were complicit in) and the punishment is a venerable slap on the wrist? Where is the justice in that? In the meantime, OSU was able to reload and wait around for Meyer and their recruiting has merely taken a tiny hit. We all knew the NCAA plays favorites, but now it's even more obvious. Tressel looked the other way just as much (maybe not for as long or in as much of a "serious matter") as did Gene Smith the AD. Gordon Gee even said he hoped Tressel "didn't fire him." Where was the "severe, scorch the earth" punishment there? I would have liked to see at least a three year bowl ban for that program and deep cuts to scholarships. The NCAA once again missed the mark, but that's nothing new. They've only gotten worse as the years have gone on.

Their administration made a grave error in ethics. So the comparison does not compute. I guess any port in a storm applies. Love you internet tough guys.

The better comparison here is that the character of a school is better represented by the entire character of the alumni and fan base.

The fans expressing their empathy have character and should be disassociated from the rule-breakers. USC-fan has no more control over Pete Carroll than PSU-fan has over Joe Paterno, alive or dead.

The condolences are heart-felt and appreciated, no matter which school they come from, because the people expressing them show character.
