    Absurdity.

Penn State is the most hated school in America right now. These kids are getting attacked by fans, but they're ALSO getting attacked/criticized by their own peers, and in some cases friends.

They are committed to a University that is synonymous for child rape. A school where the football program has been pointed as THE reason Sandusky was able to rape children. A place where the legendary football coach has been pointed as the sole reason that Sandusy was able to wander free and rape children.

If I'm a parent, there's no reason to send your child to Penn State, if there are other quality options availible to me. Why CHOOSE controversy. Why CHOOSE pariah-hood. Why CHOOSE to be criticized and attacked?

I go back to the controversy about sexual orientation in a lot of these cases - when someone says that gay people CHOOSE to be gay, I always ask - why in the world would you CHOOSE to be ostracized, to be prejudiced against, to be profiled,...when you have an easier option, that will bring about an equal amount of happiness and opportunity?

We need to stop suggesting these kids are somehow "less" for looking around at other schools, or somehow weak. It's beneath us, and woefully blind of us.

    EDIT

Oh, and NO ONE predicted this kind of invictive from the Freeh report. No one. Of course no one also though the Freeh report would lay all of Jerry Sandusky's crimes at the feet of the football program - so the media seems to believe.

Why choose a school synonymous for child rape.... why choose controversy.... why choose pariah-hood.... why choose to be ostracized.... prejudiced against.... profiled....

Because that isn't accurate, deserved, or appropriate regardless of what the talking heads wanna say.... and someone's gotta have the balls to tell the "death penalty" seeking world to STFU and get their heads outta their a$$e$.

First class town, first class facilities, first class stadium, first class fans, (we'll see about if B'OB & Co. is a....) first class coaching staff..... and a big problem with image currently. The only way you move forward is with great kids and coaches like the last class, new coaches, and this incoming class.

I don't fault kids with not wanting to come.... but those who do so positively ooze maturity and class. When this is in the rear view mirror, I'm all but certain that the kids who chose Penn State during the most tumultuous time in school history will be part of my favorite teams in all of my life.

I'm sorry, but Penn State's not even fighting these stereotypes. If the school doesn't have the balls to do it, why should the kids be exepcted to fight against the controversy?

I do agree though, the kids that choose to come here, show an unusual amount of courage, and deserve praise.

Funny...you say "Penn St" is not even fighting them...yet I am, you are, and thousands of other fans, alumni, etc. are. I think WE ARE...fighting it. Because WE ARE...Penn State!!!

I'm sorry for my post, you're exactly right, and I made my point quite poorly.

We, the community, are acting as we should. There are different voices, opinions, and ideas in our community in how we should go forward in the aftermath of the scandal. There are some very heated debates - as it should be. However, almost everyone in that community agrees that we are so much more than what the media says we are. Almost everyone agrees that football and other athletics aren't guilty of anything, inspite of what the media says. For all the supposed worshipping we do, we'd never do to Joe, what Alabama fans did to Nick Saban during SEC Media week. We were the fanbase that said it was ok to lose while Joe remained coach, because our program represented something a whole lot more than winning. That doesn't speak to a culture that only cares about winning football games. We are also the community that demands the University to change its ways so that crimes will ALWAYS be reported, that the football program can't operate in secrecy, that the administration has to answer ro someone.

Unfortunately, that community's voice has been silenced by a administrative system that doesn't take our voice into account. 90& of the BOT isn't decided by election. The President doesn't have to answer to Penn State, he answers to the BOT. Who does the BOT answer to? No one. Unofrtunately, they are the voice that the media listens to. They are the voices that the newspapers speak to - and right now, those voices are NOT fighting for Penn State. They are letting everyone else define who we are as a University and community, without raising a finger to fight. There's very little we can do about that.

Until someone in the administration or the BOT gets the courage to stand up and fight for us, we are going to continue to struggle recruiting kids to play football for us, and struggle to keep the kids we have committed. These 17 & 18 years olds are under INTENSE pressure to NOT keep their commitment to Penn State. They are up against a tide of bad press.

It's a two way street. If schools find another kid later in the cycle who they like more, they'll just as easily back away. Verbal commitments should be merely taken as 'place holders' in the current CFB landscape. Everybody (both schools and players) makes their actual commitment on LOI Day, not a day sooner.

Some schools might do that. It's much less likely for a school to drop a kid who commits than for a kid to flip.

So be it on Webb. If he leaves, which it's almost certain he will at this point, it's certainly a loss. PSU will move on.

Wonder if he even notified our coaches before informing Farrell.

I can understand having issues with the current situation at PSU but UNC has all kinds of problems right now too. But they have a final answer from the NCAA so everyone knows what to expect. Unfortunately, we do not...

yeah hopefully he is the first and only domino to fall but until we get a definitive answer on what our sanctions will be (whether self imposed or not) we will be walking on eggshells with pretty much every recruit.

If he truly feels that is the best decision for him then I won't fault him a bit but I would have liked to see him in Blue & White

  • Would expect to see Drennon to UNC next

it was only a matter of time. They wanted to play together.

  • This all is starting to make more sense. He obviously committed to PSU with hopes that some of his teammates may also get offers. Now with the scandal as a nifty excuse he can jump ship to UNC where he will be closer to family and he playing with Drennon. Honestly it seems likely this would have happened regardless and does not portend a mass exodus from this class.

  • UNC? lol Yeah, good luck.

  • This had nothing to do with sanctions as he commits to a team caught up itself. Webb would have been fine here in the fold if Drennon were along for the ride.

  • Why are higher rated kids committing to UNC? It's a certainty they'll get hit with more sanctions. Whatever, we should have known something like this was going to happen.

  • It was probably a lot easier for Webb to do this, since his family was moving to North Carolina. At that point, you had both distance AND a scandal working against us.

  • I disagree, I think its a fear of the unknown. Webb committed during the scandal so it wasn't a problem then.
