Greg Bryant offer

  • Since PSU offered Bryant, I wonder how this affects David Williams? Williams seems to be a sensitive type of guy. Look what happened this past weekend concerning the PSU offer.

IIRC, Williams was told that if he verballed to PSU, he would be the only RB in this class. PSU didn't tell him he would be the lone RB offer out there. That said, I don't like staffs making promises like that to a kid. JMO, PSU needs two backs in this class, not one.

I agree. Those kind of promises just seem so hollow. I wish they wouldn't have done that.

  • If you are playing a division 1 sport you need to realize that there will always be competition, you can only hope that some of these recruits can realize that.

If that's what they are truly going to do then I have no problem with it.... Why not tell them - they all then know that the 1st commit they get is the end of it... May spur one to commit sooner and feel better knowing we are only taking 1 RB in this class..

  • That also encourages guys to "soft verbal," or verbal to hold their spot until they're done looking around.

‏@Cordale10 Why should we have to go to class if we came here to play FOOTBALL, we ain't come to play SCHOOL, classes are POINTLESS

I have no problem with the staff making this promise as long as they keep it. My only problem comes if they lie to the kid. You have to trust BOB to craft the roster the way he wants at this point. He's not recruiting to run the offense we've all been used to. I imagine that he'll supplement his RB recruiting with athletes that can be moved around and thus help out in the backfield. If he is trying to install the NE offense, he doesn't exactly need a stable of stud RB's.

  • I don't see a problem with it. I doubt they'd have an incentive to lie to him. If he's serious about Penn St. he can commit then they can focus on other positions. Sensitivity has nothing to do with it. We need a premier high end back in this class. I suspect if they go after someone else it will be an athlete sort of player that could be a running back if needed.

  • so we got on the old staff because it was eggs in one basket, and this one tells a kid, he'd be the only RB they take, and we're getting on the staff for not putting their eggs all in Williams' basket?

CYA. You have to have other options in case option 1 falls through. Williams calls, the staff tells him, we want you, but if you choose to go elsewhere, while that is fine, and we'll wish the best for you, we need to have other options as well.

  • Recruiting is a slippery slope. Williams could commit tomorrow, we have a mediocre season and rethinks at the end and decommits. I would always offer more than one. Tell them we would like you but i cant wait around too long for your decision. This is a marathon that can go many ways.

  • There is usually only a handful of players every year that you hold out until the end for. There are so many kids of equally talent out there it really doesn't make sense to put all your eggs in one basket. IMHO the secret is how well you can evaluate talent. There maybe a five star guy you want but you may find a three star kid that you feel will develop past where the five star kid will. Recruiting is far from a exact science.

That's what makes it so FUNNNNNN.

I think that is what most are saying here - it is fine to recruit many RB's (not putting all your eggs in one basket) but telling them that they are only taking 1 in this class... If you are recruiting several RB's you will have backup plans if the one on the top of your board doesn't work out. The only risk you run in taking only 1 is that 1 soft commits as mentioned by Texas Lion and then decommits later - but this is always a possibility (no getting around it) so you still need to recruit the commits til the end and if you feel the commit is not solid then stay in touch with the other RB's on the list as best as you can..

I think in most cases, if teams only want to take one RB, they have some depth already on the roster and having that RB flip at the last minute isn't that big of an issue. For us, that is not true... if we don't get a RB in this class, we are in some trouble. I think it's pretty clear that we are going to a pass-first offense, and BOB is comfortable with having WR/ATH and H-Backs line up in the backfield instead of pure RBs. If it works, that's fine. It's just a different philosophy that we are going to have to get used to.

Good thing your not an OSU fan then. You'd be ashamed of the lies Urban will undoubtedly make in the coming years.

  • This season will be a good barometer for recruits to see how they would fit in our schemes. Right now no one knows what we will do defensively and they have a little bit of an idea offensively due to the Patriots. This is why we don't have any commits yet. At Bama, Mich and so on recruits feel that sense of urgency that its a hot place, schollies are limited and I better jump on now and secure my spot. If we tear it up this year guys will begin to commit earlier and earlier for us.
