Great article by Jay on the new 7 on 7 trend

  • Agree with him that it could become a huge problem if the NCAA doesn't do something about it.

State College, PA - Jay Paterno: NCAA, High School Football Transformed by Seven-on-Seven Teams

Meet Freddie Warbucks, an alumnus of the University of Excess who starts an off-season football team stocked with UE's top recruits.

But how much is Penn State recruiting affected by 7-on-7 teams because aren't most of these teams from Florida and Texas where we usually don't get kids.

I agree it could become a problem, but I'm curious what prompted him to write about this.

It's creeping up North slowly. Baltimore has a team with some highly touted kids who will be coming to PSU. The only issue I have with this is that it will slowly turn into coaches pimping their players like AAU coaches do. Pretty soon just like in b-ball those coaches will decide where the 7 go and it will depend upon a fee for that coach. Jay has the right idea but to many people have their hands out for the recruits now. Whether it's the HS coach, family, or now a 7 vs 7 coach. Maybe some are clean, but it takes money to tour kids around and Jay's point talks to where that money will come from.

That's why I'm hoping the NCAA steps in and does something, while they can, before this gets totally out of control.

  • The "AAU-inization" is a very bad influence. QB's are throwing in silly scenarios. Receivers have the advantage of no anticipated contact (or recall of a recent hit). Way too much showboating and bravado. Has ZERO application towards a real game other than general accuracy practice for the qb and coverage/route reps for the Defense/Offense.

Several QB's in this area are 7-7 stars in their minds. Their recent performances on the field really demonstrate that under pressure they are overwhelmed mentally and physically.

Not a fan of the NCAA but they should jump on this.

I think both Cam Williams and Armani Reeves play on a 7 v 7 team, and recently participated in some tournaments.

Solid observasions.Handlers and street agents are already evident in certain areas just like bball. This also detracts from team specific drills and seperates the player from the guidance of the H.S. coach.
