I had no feelings towards USC up until the 2009 Rose Bowl. I started hating them after watching them dance around on the sidelines (and on the field) like a bunch of ASSCLOWNS early in the game. Hell, even Pete Carroll got into the act-NO CLASS. And, Yes, I know they had a big lead and eventually won. Wait til the game is over, shake the other team's hands, then you can celebrate.

Same feelings here. That was a classless display before and during that game by that team.

Let them come... if silas stayed he could have improved his stock and jumped to the NFL. Hell he still might. When silas said it was a business decision, it was a bad one. He could have gone for 1500 yds at PSU and went 1st round.

Why does 1500 yards matter for a guys draft stock?

The NFL doesn't draft stats, they draft players. Otherwise the Texas Tech QBs (under Leach) would have gone first round every year. Silas is just as good at USC as he would be here, he just isn't showcased as much. Not that it matters, because he showcase himself enough in his time here and his time there to get drafted.

I would argue that had Silas stayed he would not only be showcased more, but he would be more appreciated. By that I mean he wouldn't be just another player and his best interests as a person and player would have always been first. Obviously that is arguable, but Kiffin has a reputation....if you can't help him he isn't helping you. There is no loyalty, his track record speaks for itself. Academically speaking, while Silas may "make the grade" at USC, you can't argue that Penn State has a reputation for developing the student athlete and maximizing his potential as a person/student. The support system has been well documented at penn State, I don't care what Mark Emmert says. If Silas blew his knee out at USC, he would be just another ex-player, heck I wouldnt doubt his scholarship was used to squeeze in another star (just like they did to the walk on to fit Silas in). His success at that point would be squarely on his ability to achieve independently. If it happened here, I'll bet you my life savings he would be taken care of and offered the same support that he had as a star. You can call this the "pompous" penn state attitude, but history speaks for itself...this is not a biased perception, its fact.

Agree, he'll get drafted regardless. I don't care where he goes anymore than any other Trojan as that is all he will ever be known as to me.

  • If, IF any portion of this is true, I imagine it all came out of Kiffen's mouth without ever consulting Redd.

Redd IS going to be working on his Draft stock in the offseason, not going to be time to visit the real SC for any of this BS.

  • As this season plays out, guys on this team will realize that the grass is not always greener...Justin Brown is a #4 WR, Silas is in a time share behind an offensive line that is terrible. How's Bolden? Nowicki? Anyone?

And what can Kiffin possibly sell? He has a team of underachieving 5 star recruits...but the three star from Penn State is suddenly going to be playing every down? Let him come and try to take some players, the ones that stayed will see right through him and standing behind him will be the man they committed to, BOB.

Why does an NFL team care about him as a person? He doesn't get arrested, has a history of being a great teammate, that's all they need to know for him to not drop in draft status.

Please stop talking about exposure. Every college game is on TV now, even Sun Belt and WAC games. The NFL has all the tape in the world on any player they want. Playing for one team over another, especially at the BCS level, does nothing for exposure.

I understand that Kiffin is a douche, but that doesn't change Silas and his chances for the NFL. I don't like him leaving either. I don't blame him, but I don't like it. However to whine that he would be better off at PSU because of draft stock is absurd, and completely false.

You're arguing with the wrong person about the culture and injury stuff. I completely agree. However it has nothing to do with Silas and his NFL draft stock, which is what I was talking about in my post.

That's probably because there's no truth to it, and it was a rumor on another message board.

Stop that nonsense. For which team...USC or the team he left when the $hit hit the fan. I certainly never thought any teammate of mine that quit on my team as a great teammate, but to each their own. He'll play on Sundays, but I respect every kid that stayed way more than I do Redd.

    Both teams.

Yep, he cut and ran, but when he was here he was renowned for a phenomenal work ethic and being a leader. That's what NFL teams will care about, not loyalty.

He wasn't a leader, he was a fraud as a leader of that team. That is my point. The NFL would take OJ Simpson with the knife in his hand and I get that, but he isn't some leader. The NFL really doesn't care if they are boy scouts, leaders, or a-holes. Can they make plays and win? Very few teams give a rats arse about the choir boy images. He'll play, but he is far from a leader in my book. It's really easy to lead when you are on top and there aren't any bumps in the road. I don't consider him a leader, sorry. Working hard off the field for yourself doesn't mean you are a great leader. It's a good trait, but there is a much bigger package involved.

  • It's safe to say, Benedict would make a lousy Marine or "Seal". They both never leave one of their own behind. He wasn't a team leader at all. Giger made a laughable comment when he decided to transfer saying Silas will eb remembered as one who stayed? I laughed.

However, the NFL doesn't care too much about character, or lack there of. They don't care about a kid not being a leader. Hell, they don't care about a player who has used drugs, or beat up his girl friend. Warren Sapp and Lawrence Phillips had a rap sheet coming out of Miami and Nebraska. However, they were both drafted. Why? Because they could make plays.

    Not saying I don't agree.

Just tired of people whining and saying he made the wrong decision, with their argument based off of NFL draft stock. It's retarded, and gets annoying to see on the boards.

He made the wrong decision IMO, but its more for academic reasons than anything.

Exactly. I don't think Silas is a bad person, criminal, or anything like that at all. He seems like a decent person who looks out for himself first which is fine. Just don't try and sell me the line of BS that he was a great leader for PSU. Hard worker, sure. Talented, yes. Leader = NOT.

This sentence seems replete with conflicting statements. Zebras don't change their stripes. Cutting and running is not what leaders do.

I don't know why Redd would do that ... how is that good for business?

Exactly, if anything it will damage his reputation.

  • If I'm an NFL team, here's how I view Redd: He's a guy who--right or wrong--puts himself before team and avoids adversity for an easier path. NFL seasons are longer, tougher and more often more disappointing for most teams. NFL teams want guys who stay positive, support others, and keep working together for team success. Look at how Sean Lee has been a motivating force at Dallas. That's the kind of internal stuff that makes NFL teams great.
