Gilliam position change is official - Twitter

I don't think anyone knows. Gilliam flat out tweeted he greyshirted & then redshirted (once he tore his ACL) so wouldn't that be the samething as what happen to Wartman RS wise?

I'll wait until we get official word because until then it's pure speculation.

Yep, but this is how the official website and every reputable schollie matrix I see has had him:

    2009 Redshirt
    2010 Freshman
    2011 Sophomore
    2012 Junior
    2013 Senior

2014 is the 6th year and the one he needs to worry about. Can't get the 6th year until you have exhausted eligibility, which he has yet to do.

? Is this a legit site?

The author of the article released the article right after Gilliam tweeted it and has quotes from him. He must have told her his current weight for her to include it, I'm guessing.

  • Uhh, it was official when Sean reported it in the S Zone imo.

I guess I should warn you, if I turn out to be particularly clear, you've probably misunderstood what I've said.

  • Very selfless move I think with the added weight he could thrive at the position. Can see BOB brewing up some goaline trickery with Gilliam.

Yeah, that's what I was hoping... But then, why not quote him saying that he's 295? I dunno. If true, thats obviously awesome... Im just skeptical... But with Fitz, who knows...

Mtay... I believe the rule changed last year and you can apply for the 6th year prior to finishing your 5th year. There are some on. Here who know the rules really well, but I believe Gilliam is a lock to get a 6th year and may already have been granted the 6th year. I think the only hurdle is the coaching staff wanting him back and usin one of those ships in 2014. If he's a starter it won't be an issue I imagine.

He certainly will have agility and quickness, which was an issue with Farrell i believe. So at the very least, people won't be running right past him

Maybe I'll call my college coach and see if the rule has changed since I went through. But I remember even last off season guys applying for 6th years.

A greyshirt has nothing to do with a his eligibility. Basically, if he greyshirted his eligibility clock didn't start. Troutman greyshirted.

He couldn't be on scholarship if he greyshirted. So he could then potentially have THREE years left if he was granted a medical waiver, though I don't know what the greshirt would do to his ability to apply for a sixth year.

I don't dare to try to explain journo's decisions.

If this has been in the works since November, with Fitz it's certainly possible.

This off season also (maybe), Caraun Reid from Princeton just got approved for a 6th year after blowing out his knee his sophomore year.

Princeton DT Reid to play another season | Fox News

Princeton All-America defensive tackle Caraun Reid will play another season with the Tigers and be classified for the 2014 NFL Draft instead of this year.He was granted another year of eligibility at Princeton because he sat out much of his sophomore year in 2010 with a pectoral injury

  • Just looking into it, I don't think Gilliam greyshirted. But as others have said, he is a lock for a 6th year. I would count on him for 2 more as long as the coaches want him for the 6th.

Ya... All the information I can find says they have to wait until after heir 5th year has exhausted. I guess what I'm thinking is the medical redshirt can now be applied for immediately. As I just reviewed the rules basically Gilliam lost two seasons and is a lock for a 6th year but you are correct I now believe on applying for the 6th year.

To clear a few other things up... They NCAA doesn't just make a random decision to gran 6th year. There are clear guidelines that determine eligibility of the 6th year and Gilliam meets those. He was probay already given and medical redshirt and then applied for the medical exemption making him a lock for a 6th year. The QB for Wisconsib just got his 6th year granted.

  • This is really exciting. A big, strong athletic converted TE moving to RT. reminds me of Jason Peters. Same type of build. Hopefully this kid can be coached up enough between now and the fall to be effective at the position. I know, from back when I was in college, that TEs work a lot with the linemen on in-line blocking. The one area he'll have to refine is his kick-slide, and his hand placement in pass pro, as TEs are not asked to do these things vs a DE.

I think the key for Gary will be gaining strength in his core and lower back, and working on form sitting back further in his stance. He definitely has the arm length you look for in an offensive tackle, and he should have the needed foot speed(especially being a good basketball player in high school)

I'm very excited about this move. It almost feels like we just landed a new recruit ; )

Has it been confirmed that he got a medical redshirt? I had not seen that...

Yes, he already got his medical hardship granted, which is a rarity until your final year of true eligibility. But he has two full years left.

  • I don't think Gilliam greyshirted in 2009. I believe he took too many credits in the Fall 09 semester. That would have "started his clock" in Fall 09.
If I remember correctly, only Carson greyshirted out of the 2009 class.

Yea, Karissa Maxwell is a PSU senior I believe majoring in journalism or something like that. Her twitter page and pictures with football players suggests she's both a student and close with players on the team, IIRC including Gary.... Unless it's a fake twitter account that's been around for years [insert Te'o joke here] she's legit.

Was just clarifying what I wrote earlier for the sake of accuracy, pointing out that I think what I wrote was not accurate.. I know a rule was changed this past season but I guess it only relates to medicals.

I believe it's Wilkerson - used to go to DeMantha and is a RS TE. Will be added to the TE rotation this season.

  • I like the move. Not only strengthens the OT position but it could allow Alosi to move back to DT.
