Geno Lewis...PSU is stocked and loaded at WR

  • Hixon can't say enough about Geno. Can't wait to see him with ARob, Moseby-Felder and Williams. What a WR corps.

Fully Loaded: Penn State receivers coach Stan Hixon working with a deep cast of talented athletes now ... and in the future

Hixon gushed about the potential of true freshman wideout Eugene Lewis, who is being redshirted this season.

  • Our offense could be scary next year if we have a QB step up to the plate. You have almost everyone coming back (except Stank and McGloin) and add in players like Lewis, Golden, Lynch. We aint seen nothin' yet!! I'm really rooting for Hack to pick up the offense and start from day 1.

  • Jake Waters should be beating down the door to get to Penn State.

From everything I've read, Geno isn't going anywhere. His dad apparently has a very good relationship with Hixon.

  • I like that Lewis redshirted but with hindsight being 20/20 it probably would have been better for williams to RS and lewis play. With Kenney falling off and nobody really stepping into that slot role is would have been awesome to put geno in there. Might help in the return game too. But oh well. And as for him transferring he's one guy I don't see going anywhere. I don't think people will really leave and the ones that will are more than likely going to be marginal players. If you gave any program a "get out of jail free" card to the players, even without sanctions each team would probably lose 10 guys. After that initial wave I think the kids here are committed.

I just meant about the group in general. I'm not too worried about the freshman class. It would have been easiest for them to bail last year.

Yeah that class is pretty unlikely. None of them should really feel like they won't get playing time, whereas a kid going into his RS jr year who still hasn't seen much action will probably be getting antsy.

But what you said in general, less praise is better for selfish purposes.

I have no idea how you came up with that. Williams was the more polished player who picked up the nuances of the WR position faster. He's performed pretty well this year for a frosh, while obviously being a secondary level option. The best thing for Geno to do was to RS and truly learn how to play WR. I think they absolutely made the right move for both players. Instead of the slot role we have used Kyle Carter who has ran those types of routes from a flex position instead. That's the beauty of this offense, if no true position "type: steps up, you can flex another there for matchups.

That said, Geno has the potential to be very very very good.

At the same time...guys who are RS Jr's and aren't playing here most likely won't be playing elsewhere either. It's the guys who are playing now that would be playing elsewhere.

Yeah, but I'd guess most kids don't think like that. Most probably think they're being underutilized and are frustrated, so they'll look for an escape, even if it's not with a highly regarded program. Who knows, hopefully almost everyone stays, I'm not looking forward to the recruitment period.

I just think williams doesn't give you the dynamic ability that geno does. I agree that williams is probably the more polished WR but I don't think he has the overall athletic ability that geno has. Like I said I don't mind Geno redshirting but the one thing this offense is missing is a dynamic guy to make the splash plays and who is a threat to break it everytime he touches the ball. 6 one way 1/2 dozen the other I guess. I like having geno for 4 more years but sometime I think of what could have been with him on the field this year.

It's pretty crazy that next year we can say PSU has the best collection of receivers in the BIG. You can't say that too often. Robinson, BMF and Lewis. That, is scary.

I don't think Geno is what you are describing anyways.... He's not a breakaway speed guy

If you can't run the routes at the level needed, can't block, and need to get a feel for the WR position after playing QB for the prior two years, you should redshirt. I also feel like you're describing a Sammy Watkins type player, when Geno is more of a smooth as silk player than a sudden player. He's more Allen Robinson than that slot type I feel like you want. His athletic ability and ceiling is probably higher than T-Willy's, but as raw as he is/was, he's also the kind of kid who naturally has a lower floor (coming into the season). You have to play the kids who are ready to play. None of that is a slight to Geno, he said himself that he had a lot to learn. T-Willy was lucky enough to have good coaching through his extra off season teams as well as a full HS career to polish up at WR.

And of course, like you said, I'm sure some came from wanting to have that talent maximized for four years.

  • It will be really interesting next year to see the re-introduction of the long ball. I like what MM has done this year, but the long ball isn't his strong suit. There were plays left on the field this year in that area. Taking the top off the defense only makes the TE's and running game more lethal. Hopefully a strong starter at QB will emerge to take advantage of it all. Oh, and we pick up Lynch out of the backfield too.

He may not have randy moss speed, but he can be a Larry Fitzgerald type for sure !

  • I've seen Geno play plenty and can say he is an exceptional athlete. He is not a track guy, or somebody that is going to blow you away with his straight line speed. That said he has excellent functional speed, great body control, and good elusiveness for a player of his size. Another aspect that can't be overlooked are his hands. They are huge. I guarantee he will make catches that will have people saying did you see that? I hope Jake Waters is paying close attention to the collection of talent that is being assembled around him.

    WR- ARob, BMF, Lewis, Williams
    TE- Carter, James, AB
    RB- ZZ, Belton Lynch.

There are excellent options at multiple positions, with a coach who understands how to deploy them. The one thing we lack is a WR who can get vertical. Hopefully that can be addressed in the near future.
