Garrity vs. Switzer?

  • I don't want to look backwards much, but honestly, watching the two sets of film suggests that we got a reasonable replacement for Switzer in this class in Garrity Jr., and it didn't cost us a scholarship in the process.

    Don't get me wrong Switzer is A LOT more sudden and is the better pure athlete by far, but Garrity is a much more polished receiver and has better hands. Garrity will be a natural fit in the slot once his weight comes up a bit, while I bet Switzer will require a couple years of work at route running and the other finer points of playing the slot position.

    I'm certainly not saying they are comparable athletes by any means, but I think Garrity will be a nice slot WR and, for our use of a scholarship, Hamilton is the better overall receiver than Switzer so I'm glad we spent that scholarship wisely. I hope it turns out to be a win-win on both fronts.

  • I would take Switzer over Garrity in a second. Nothing against Garrity, but Ryan is a far better prospect. I don't think it's fair to classify him as a replacement to what we didn't get.

    I agree, and I said as much above.... my point was simply that I think Garrity could be a very good slot WR in two years--which was the roll that Switzer would have filled on this team. Certainly at 5-8 Switzer wasn't lining up out wide at split end or flanker, so if we're just looking for a good slot guy, I think Garrity could fit the bill in two years.

    But agree with everyone that Switzer is a terrific athlete and prospect physically.... no contest there.

    The only comparison I was making was filling the slot position on the roster.

  • This just reminds me about how much will change in the next year. A year ago, Switzer was one of the hottest names out there that would pick PSU. Now, I had completely forgotten about him until I saw this thread.

    Yea, I forgot about him too until I looked at the final class rankings and saw a couple familiar faces on the UNC list.... would have loved to get Switzer at the time, but now I think we ended up with the better overall WR in Hamilton and a good slot guy in Garrity.

    But was Switzer THAT much better to cost us a valuable scholarship when we could get Garrity to run on? Pre sanctions, I definitely would've wanted Switzer, but given our current situation, it may have been for the best

    JMO, the impact Switzer could have had on special teams might have made him worth it.

  • IMO, Switzer is a shorter and slower version of Sam McGuffie and I expect his BCS contributions to be about the same. I was never enamored with him as a prospect. Switzer plays in WV where the competition level is below single A PA football. No one should be losing sleep over losing Switzer and to the topic, I would take Garrity sans scholarship over Switzer on scholarship every day of the week.

    I think he's closer to a Wes Welker type. McGuffie was a pure RB, Switzer is a slot WR in college.

    Zizzle-- I agree his talent and athleticism were perfect for the slot, but I'm still not sold that Switzer is a natural pass catcher. He might be one of these great pint-sized athletes who can do great things in the open field, but "fights" to catch balls that hit him in the numbers. I'm not say's that's the case, I'm just saying based on watching his film and watching him at the Opening, etc. that he's not the natural receiver and pass catcher that Garrity is currently. If only a player had Garrity's hands and Switzer's frame/athleticism.... oh wait, that's Wes Welker.

    If Switzer can prove he's reliable to catch the ball cleanly and consistently in traffic while running crossing patters in between linebackers, then yes, he's as close to Welker in this class as it gets.

    I disagree, obviously with the benefit of hindsight, but I'm happy with Hamilton as the only scholarship WR this year and I'm happy with Garrity as a run-on.

    Remember the end of the recruiting cycle when we only wanted higher end talent? Someone like Switzer that was pursued that hard and offered so early qualifies.

    Good point since Sean and many other think he ends up in the slot.... Forgot about him since I keep thinking about him in Belton's role circa 2012 not 2011.

  • There is a reason why Switzer was one of the first offers by OB and Garrity is a walk on. I am as die hard of a psu fan as they come, but lets not kid ourselves.

    Garrity is not overly fast, he is not tall or well built. Saying that, he does a lot of things well and I know he can make an impact on our offense. He has excellent body control, he is fearless over the middle and catches the ball with his hands. I see him around 15-20 catches a year (down the road). With OB's system, he will produce. I know a lot of people say he is like Jordan N, but they are really not that close.
