Game thoughts without tv review yet..

  • The initial stuff from the game.

Refs blew from what I saw at the game. Waiting to see a couple of those on replay.

McGloin still has some times he gets out of whak(when he has to move his feet a ton unscripted, i.e. not a designed roll or what have you), but his reads have been much better. He forces some still which scares the beJesus out of us. But he is seeing the proper reads often(from what I can see as my opinion). As the season progresses, and they WR's and he get in tune, they will do even better. He is starting to try and throw the WR open at times and they werent ready for it occasionally. Think we can and will be better should he stay healthy and protected. Had some GREAT throws today to go with a few he forced.

Allen Robinson- Going to be a force for the opposition to deal with. ON the long TD, give MM credit too. Pump fake then nice touch over the top of one and in front of another.

Kyle Carter- Kid has hands. And if we get locked up with a zone defense team, he is the guy. He keeps moving to get open as plays are stretched longer than originally scripted.

Lehman has skills and nice size as well. Think he should be the #2 TE receiving option easily right now

Zordich- Better feet than I would have expected at times. Not gonna blow any open without help, but he isnt going to really hurt you either. Versatile.

Zwinak- Nice to see his play today. He looked pretty good out there. Pretty consistent and with O'B figuring this group runs better from a deep back set, we may have a solid run game coming into B1G play

OL- I think, still, that we can be solid here. Get Smith back and keep working these guys in. Get assignments figured out on a more consistent basis and go from there.

Dukes? Bueller? Bueller?- Clean uni when coming in for special teams late. What's O'B say though? Next guy up!

Liked much of what the offense showed today. Kenney more I would like. Keep finding other options so Robinson is forced to be guarded honestly..not with 5 guys(yes and intentional exaggeration)

    Our defense loves to hit.

Mauti/Hill were what I expected. Hodges still a beast though I thought he lost contain a few times today and was yellin at him(Im sure he cringed) :D

CJ did well today. The ends playing were young, but the experience will help them much down the road. They arent "there" yet, however I find it tough to not say they show promising qualities.

Hull is still progressing nicely and I still am a big fan, no change there. :)

Carson I like more and more weekly, mostly since he is solid on sideline to sideline this year. Cut down on some bad angles and go to the next level even..

    Our defense loves to hit.

Davis in @ CB with Morris and Amos to safety was fun to see and our "Nickle" with Hull out there. Be interested to see how that does down the road.

    Our Defense loves to hit.

Morris can cover. Better with looking for the ball...still not good enough. Still want him out there fo' sho'.

Amos is just an athletic lookin dude, I will just say that. Pick a position, that statement doesnt change.

SOA- Still like his progression. Willis leads a good bit I think and solid. Just keep healthy and keep meshing DB's

Davis still has a ways to go, but toss him to the wolves and hope they learn fast will be something we need to become accustomed to.

Thought Butterworth had a good day out there and good for Sam...I was happy for him and hope he can gain some confidence better, just needs to get those kicks up some(trajectory).

Coverage units with Mauti/Hull/Kline/Zordich and others should be good, quite formidable looking out there . Love seeing some of those guys out there. Our punt block/return unit much more organized and doing multiple things and showing multiple looks.

Temples kicker will be getting some NFL action I think and they had some solid looking players out there. We controlled nearly all the game though and that was nice. Cut out some errors and it was a pretty solid game for our boys.

Enjoyed meeting some more of the board tailgating as well. Good times.

  • I didn't notice the ends, but in some ways I don't mind that. They held the edge pretty well - Temple didn't do quite as well running on the edge as Navy did. Though up the middle was a problem later in the game, which concerned me.

Morris' play on the ball was a lot better...read the receiver and hit the guy's hands at just the right time.

I like how Hull looks...he will be very good for us the next two years.

    Good thoughts, Seltz.

  • Good summary Seltz. I wish I had been able to make the 247 tailgate this year.

I too was surprised by Zordich's foot quickness and just his natural running ability. Zwinak also had more burst in his game than I expected.

We need Belton back, but Zordich and Zwinak nicely complement what Belton brings to the game. The Pats used RB by commitee approach when BOB was OC, so I expect we see RB by commitee the rest of this season, with Belton filling the Danny Woodhead role, and the two Zs or Derek Day filling the BenJarvus Green-Ellis and Stevan Ridley roles.

  • Nice recap. Loved how aggressively the Z Boys punished and attacked decisively on each run. If Belton learns from that could spark big play opportunities. Also liked that we attacked the edge more. How much did Kuntz play? Only play I saw him was on the toss sweep as a lead blocker. Did well.

Would be interested in anyone's assessment of Shrive's play at RT. Gress had a rough day facing speed off the edge. OT depth and recruiting are a priority.

  • Ok, I needed to mention it somewhere.

Watching the second half of the Temple game and this guy announcing is cracking me up and annoying me at the same time.

    1) Boy did he go out of his way to show he felt, and why he felt, Della Valle was 'targeting'

    2) The quote(paraphrased maybe) "Penn State would like nothing more than a long grind it out 3 yards and a cloud of dust drive"

next 4 plays or so out of the hurry up....and passes biggrin

  • Seltz had a great write up.

I finally got to see the entire game (BTN football in 60)

I will say we got lucky on a lot of deep balls by temple. Temple had some drops and of course the catch where the WR was out of bounds.

The refs did suck a bit.

    Daquan Davis is fast.

Nice to see CJ have a nice game and also for baublitz to get that sack. I'm surprised not to see as much Zettal impact.

The mike hull sack was awesome. He is so fast and came out of nowhere.

We had a hell of a DL line push throughout most of the game. Our OL got some really good push as well but were getting blitzed all day. I thought the OL play is what made zwinack seem to be running downhill for most of the second half.

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

So my impression on a single viewing was that Temple went to generally short passes (similar to Ohio), which helped to neutralize our DL except for a few times. My question to you guys who watched it over again - is that an incorrect impression that I have?
