Ga Tech instead of Rutgers...?

What?!! No bleeping way PSU goes to ACC. They are staying, the connections to the Big are much better, despite the bad calls. Every conference is tied to a few core teams, the ACC UNC AND Duke in BB and to a lesser extent, Wake and State, ACC football was always secondary. Big is looking to add markets and it makes sense to expand to the southern markets, getting a foot in NC would be good, but not going to happen IMO unless the get State to jump ship.

It is what you want, Penn State is happy in the Big, the revenues are much higher than the ACC would project.

  • UMMM ... isn't there a rule in place that says a potential new school has to geographically border another member institution? Which BIG state borders Georgia for this to happen, unless the BIG throws out one of its rules - which is entirely possible since the NCAA certainly has.

The last time expansion talks were happening, this rule didn't really seem to matter. I forget why....

That's more of a guideline than a rule. Remember Texas?

It's an urban legend. I hate to link Giger stories, but...

"There are no restrictions regarding expansion - potential additions are not required to be in the AAU, and they do not have to be in (or adjacent to) the eight Big Ten states," league spokesman Scott Chipman wrote in an e-mail.

  • On the hypothetical route of connecting the states, imagine UMD, VT, UNC/Duke and GT. That would be spectacular.

    Wonka

  • Why would the B1G want GT? They are a school that is terrible in athletics, has no fan support anywhere in the state, doesn't fit geographically, and are literally an afterthought in the state.

If you have been to Atlanta or anywhere else in the state you quickly realize that no one cares about GT anywhere. They are like Pitt except with even less support in their hometown.

  • GT >>>> RU in just about every single aspect. Is there any teeth to this or just hopeful speculation?

  • Athletically Ga Tech would be a better fit than Rutgers BUT I think the B1G wants the NY TV market. ATL is a bigger Bulldogs market anyway so they won’t get you many eyes on the TV.

We would have to snag Clemson for that scenario ....I would prefer them over Tech

That is my everlasting hope... I say let's take this conference to 16 teams in one swoop, end it, and leave Notre Dame hanging with the choice of joining the SEC or Pac12 (as I believe with the BIG's move, the Pac will gobble up more Big 12 teams)

No inside info, but I always felt 16 was the ultimate goal.

Penn State wants the teams and the cultural balance of power to be less Mid-Western.

Expanding the B1G to the East helps address this issue, while maintaining the financial, research, and academic benefits.

My preference: Maryland, UVA, VT, GT. Any other Southern teams interested?

Nah, NC just barely borders GA, so it would work in theory.

  • I lived in Atlanta for 4 years while in grad school. GT football is an afterthought there. It is a cool little stadium just off of I 75 which is rarely full. I honestly don't remember them even being on TV except when they played UGA or Notre Dame. Great school though, and enjoyed the basketball games while I was there.

I would rather stay more north and get MD, Rutgers, UVA, and V Tech. Then there would be a nice eastern division shaping up with (OSU, PSU, UVA, VT, MD, RU, ?, ?) Selfishly, I would like to have closer away games.

    drken22

  • MD, GT, UVA/VT, UNC would be just fine with me if we go to 16.

Nobody may like it, but regardless of where our conference is at, if Notre Dame comes to the B1G and says they want in they will get in. They are worth that much.

In a related matter, this well could be the end game that forces their hand. The B1G takes MD and Rutgers. Then the B12 (who wants to grow badly so they can get a championship game back) throws the bank at FSU and Clemson (maybe even taking VA and VATech). The SEC grabs GTech and somebody else (Miami?). All of a sudden, ND's affiliation with the ACC isn't worth crap and they are forced to fully join a conference. When that time comes, no conference makes more sense for them than the B1G. So ND an BC join as the 15th and 16th teams. What's left of the ACC will join with the Big East in a basketball conference.

Maryland may seem insignificant, but once the first hole pops up in the dam...I expect FSU to bail. It's no secret they are interested in other opportunities. When FSU jumps, the ACC will disintegrate very quickly.

When the dust settles, the B1G network is entrenched in Baltimore/DC, NY/NJ and Boston and has the national appeal of ND. This is the vision I would imagine is going through Delaney's head.

My understanding is the Big Ten will never again ask Notre Dame to join, after asking multiple times before, so if ND is to join, they will have to approach the BIG and be willing to include football. Does anyone think ND will be able to swallow their pride and their self serving to ask the BIG to "please" take them?

I'm not sure they can see the past their own admiration.

  • I know this expansion is all about TV money, but I was bored.

    Big Ten:

    US News rankings:
    4 University of Chicago
    12 NW
    29 Mich
    41 Wisky
    45 PSU and Ill
    55 OSU
    58 MD
    65 PU
    69 RU and Minny
    71 MSU and Iowa
    78 Indy
    101 NU *
    - * Removed from the AAU? Hey Nebraska, way to screw things up. The rest of the members are in the AAU.

    8 Duke *
    19 ND
    24 UVA *
    27 WF
    30 UNC *
    31 BC
    36 GT *
    44 Miami
    58 Pitt *
58 Syr (Just gave up their membership)
    68 Clemson
    72 VT
    97 FSU
    106 NCSU
    - * In the AAU

The Rankings could be off by a few, but I don't think I missed any AAU memberships.

If they continue the trend of AAU schools, it looks like UVA, UNC, Duke, and GT are sitting pretty. Of course, ND would likely be the exception to the rule.

I'm with you on everything except Boston College. I say, go for any of the following schools over BC:

UVA, VT, UNC, Clemson, GT, FSU, Uconn, Syracuse

JoePa was the first to publicly come out with an effND sentiment. He lobbied for more eastern schools in the B1G and after his death, he's getting his wish. Not unlike Joe effing Syracuse and Pitt for kiboshing his dream of an Eastern all sports conference. The ADs at the time at both Pitt and Sorryexcuse didn't want to share BB money with Penn State, but the greedy batsturds were willing to share our FB money. Hindsight is 20-20 and after a quarter-century I still say eff Pitt and eff Sorryexcuse.

Pitt fans have to be so pissed right now. They finally think they are getting into a better conference and it could very well turn into the Big Least Part II maybe worse if FSU, Clemson, VT, and Miami leave.

Kinda sounds like Notre Dame doesn't it?
"We want in your conference to share the BBall and everything else, but we're taking our Football and going home"

If nothing else, I'm proud our conference leadership has never caved in to Notre Dame for some special accomodation. The ACC showed its weakness by accepting ND's terms. ND is on a ship with a hole in it, they will either wise up and come knocking on the BIG's door before we fill up or be left to join the "new" Big East (ACC)...That in all seriousness could lose FSU, Clemson, (Big 12) Va Tech, GaTech (BIG) VaTech, Miami (SEC) .... boy what a great football conference that would leave.
