Football question of the Day (7-19)

The inability to predict what play is coming next...

Yeah. Most of this board knows the game better than the average fan, but there were points when guys were calling whole series in the In-game threads. That shouldn't happen.

On offense...some organization. The HC and OC are the same person, instead of the three headed monster of previous years. What a cluster F it seemed at times.

I am looking forward to a more up-tempo offense, quick short passes, better use of TE, all complemented by a stud RB.

You mean...Jay/Galen confer, Jay tell Mike, Mike tell Joe, Joe tell Mike (hopefully he agrees or got back to beginning), Mike tell QB...wasn't efficient?

    Today's question is:

Which new scheme, offense or defense, will be more 'startling' to watch this season as a traditional PSU fan?

For me, it's going to be offense.

Most of that feeling is due to the fact that I have been banking on the defense to win the game for us the past couple of years and didn't put much faith in the offense.

To me, it will (hopefully) be startling to see the offense as compared to last year since the personel will be about the same. Seeing different offensive sets and motion plus potential audibles outweigh the shift from zone to man coverage for our DB's.

Scoring over 20 points against OSU would be startling to me :)

If winning was easy even losers would do it.

What are you guys most looking forward to about the new offense and/or defense?

With the caveat that these will take a few years to implement, as we get players for the new systems.

Offense: Increased role of the tight end. Being surprised at the play being ran, instead of being able to predict it based on situation and formation.

Defense: Aggressiveness. Corner blitzes. Having a system that DB's want to play in, and keeping our traditional strengths (DL, LB) strong while improving our weakness.

well, when you put it that way, it sounds like the model of efficiency. Henry Ford and his assembly line would be proud of our offensive coaches.

  • I'll be delighted and more than a bit relieved to simply get to the Kickoff...

  • What I'm looking forward to most:

Offense: Modern day blocking schemes that make it easier to handle a blitz. Passes over the middle, and keeping the ball in Redd's and Belton's hands as much as possible while trying to keep defenses honest. On a strength note, seeing an interior lineman or OT knock an opposing lineman on his ass would be a refreshing change. Haven't seen that consistently in a while.

Defense: How Carson will adapt to a more straight ahead scheme. I'm expecting big things personally. I want to see if Hodges and Fortt are as effective going North-South instead of East-West. Bump and Run coverages.

    Startling:

Defense will be the most startling, as I think we have an inconsistent defense for the first time in many, many years. I trust BOB to keep it mostly on the ground where our strengths are, but I don't trust Roof to not call some blitz packages at inopportune times.

  • I agree w/ alot of what's been said. I think the offense will be startling in the sense that they will audible and will see some modern day play calling. I swear if I had to see one more play in which the WR comes in motion and runs that stupid jet sweep I was gonna throw my TV out the window. Efficient play calling will def. be nice to see. As far as the defense goes, I think some of the mistakes will be startling, a whole new secondary that will probably end up playing some true freshmen. I think we'll see some blown coverages that will make you scratch your head. Overall though, I think the D has enough talent to good enough to stop the run and keep us in games and as long as the offense can actually score some points that should translate into a decent amount of wins.

  • I vote for special teams.. It seems the coaches are trying to take advantage of the return game by getting diverse playmakers back there.. Kickoffs should be exciting too between fera's leg and fitz having 10 madmen ready to take someone's head off! Also, it was the penn state mantra for a long time to kick when given the option, expect that to change under BOB

This. Plus the tempo, and schemes to get our play makers (i.e. speed guys) the ball
