Football and athletics deemphasized. Conspiracy ?

  • When Dr Erickson took over as president of PSU, he said that one of his goals was to rein in the football program. I think he has been extremely successful in doing that in just 8 months.
Dr Erickson is an academic first and foremost. He wanted to knock football off its pedestal and I think he's been masterful in how he did it.
    1. Who set up the Freeh investigation and who paid for it.
    2. Who is the football icon at PSU. Whose reputation and accomplisments had to be completely destroyed.
    3. Who is the dead guy that can't defend himself.
    4. Who had something to gain by controlled leeking of the most damaging parts of the Freeh report to the media. If you're trying deemphasize the athletic programs and football in particular, then it clears up some of the fog.
    5. The NCAA accepts the Freeh report without doing any investigation of their own.
    6. Erickson signs the consent decree, accepting what is worse than the death penalty, eliminating any recourse by PSU.

The academics got control of their school back from the football program. They're not giving it back.

Crazy? Interesting speculation. Makes as much sense as anything else.
    Predictions.
Most 4th and 5th year players stay. Most others, if they're any good, will leave.
Most of the coaches will be gone after this season(football).
I've heard some folks say that it will be a decade till PSU football is back. I will be pleasantly surprised if it returns in
lifetime(I'm 66 and I hope to live another 20 yrs).
Major hits to most of the athletic programs. Football was cash cow. Eliminate the cash most of the suckers will be left
    without any milk.

  • I wouldn't be surprised.

I don't understand what's wrong with the Stanford model. It is possible to be good at both academics and football.

They really need to bring the [facepalm] smiley back for stupid people like this.

Yes, that's exactly what I meant. It's so obvious when I talk about a model to follow - which is kind of what you do with a model - that I'm saying Penn State is EXACTLY like Stanford. Obviously Penn State is academically on par or superior to Stanford.

Considering your reading comprehension is severely handicapped, I'll fill you in on a little secret: the previous paragraph was sarcasm.

The problem is he answers to the BoT who answer to the alumni and the alumni will not stand back and let them destroy the football program.

Do you think he is more worried about Cleary and federal funding or Certification issues? Especially since it is now a popular decision to inflect as much pain on Penn State students as possible. Many predicted he was going to pin as much on football as possible and then allow football to take its lumps to isolate the damage from the rest of the University.

BoT doesn't answer to anyone except possibly power players. The idea that the alumni have power in this situation is a farce.
